Team handball is very popular in much of the world, but little known in North America. Its very name is confusing even to an American who knows quite a bit about sports. The modern game actually grew out of three sports that were developed, independently, in three different European countries: The Czech hazena, the Danish handbold, and the German Torball. All three were based on soccer, but essentially replaced the foot with the hand, so that the ball could be advanced by batting or throwing, rather than by kicking. Hazena was being played by Slovak peoples as early as 1892; its rules were first codified in 1906, by a college professor. Handbold (the Danish word for handball) was developed in 1898 by a teacher, Holger Nielsen, as an alternative to soccer. In 1906, Nielsen revised the rules considerably and began organizing competitions outside the school at which he taught. Similarly, Torball was created in 1915 by a German gymnastics teacher, Max Heiden. Professor Carl Schelenz of the Berlin Physical Education School in 1919 combined elements of handbold and Torball and adapted the soccer playing field for a new sport which he called handball (actually translating the Danish into German). Schelenz also borrowed from basketball, which was just becoming popular in Germany, to allow dribbling as a means of advancing the ball.

The NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee is recommending legislation that would further assist prospective student-athletes and enrolled student-athletes who participate in "elite" organized events. At its October 24-26 meeting in Colorado Springs, Colorado, committee members decided to pursue a legislative change that would prevent participation in elite events such as the Olympics, Pan Am Games or the World Championships from triggering the use of a season of competition and the requirement of serving an academic year in residence for prospective student-athletes and enrolled student-athlete in tennis, and swimming and diving. Currently, there are no exceptions for participation in elite athletics events, and athletes could potentially be required to use a season of competition as well as sit for an academic year. Committee Chair Kyle Kallander, commissioner of the Big South Conference, said the group was attempting to address situations that have arisen as a result of new NCAA legislation regarding eligibility and seasons of competition.

While TV coverage of past Summer Games has focused on a smattering of marquee sports such as gymnastics, swimming and track, every single sport on the Olympics bill will get airtime in 2004. And while handball, trampoline, Taekwondo and badminton aren't likely to get Saturday primetime slots, many Americans are looking forward to watching events rarely beamed to U.S. living rooms. Betsy Ross of Cincinnati, Ohio, said she enjoys watching the "not-as-publicized" Olympic events because she likes to learn about new sports, such as team handball, which she discovered during the Atlanta Games. The purity of the spotlight-shunned sports is also appealing to Ross.

Shanny a saviour?
This past week, Brendan Shanahan of the Detroit Red Wings assembled a group of respected personalities from most of the constituencies associated with the NHL. Shanahan's goal was to have a hockey think-tank to improve the on-ice product that the NHL puts forward to its fans. Such an approach should be lauded for its initiative, eager participation, focus and creativity. The approach should also be replicated in other areas of Canadian sport. In this case, I am speaking of the sorry state of our nation's amateur Summer Olympic team sports men's and women's soccer, men's and women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's field hockey, men's and women's water polo, men's and women's team handball and men's baseball and women's softball. The first astonishing fact is that, of the 14 potential teams, ONLY three (men's baseball, women's softball and women's water polo) even qualified to go to the Olympics in Athens. Of those, the men finished fourth in baseball, while the women's softballers and water poloists did not make the medal round.

In fact, ask many Americans what they think handball is, and they'll probably describe a game similar to racquetball with two competitors slapping a small ball off a wall with their hands. Not so.
    Did You Know?
The NBA Houston Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon began his athletic career and unknowingly honed his basketball skills by playing handball in Nigeria as a child.
The easiest way to describe handball is, "soccer with the hands instead of the feet." Much like soccer, it can be both physical and fast, with shots being thrown at speeds approaching 65 miles per hour. The sport used to be played on a large turf field with 11 players per side, but has more recently been moved indoors and played with with seven players, which has sped up the game even more. The object is to score more goals than the other team by throwing a ball (somewhat smaller than a soccer ball) into a D-shaped net. Games consist of two 30-minute halves. Players can only take three steps after catching the ball and can only hold the ball for three seconds before they must either pass, dribble (like basketball), or shoot. A defender can use his/her hands or body to block a ball but can't use the feet or lower legs (except for goalies). Like soccer, free throws, corner throws, and penalty throws become an integral part of the game.

Athlete Eligibility and Classification
Players at the Deaflympics compete under CISS rules which require a minimum hearing loss of 55 dB in the better ear. Classification procedures and criteria are described on the CISS web site at http://www.ciss.org . Click on "about," then "regulations," then scroll down to Article 1.3 on eligibility. Players in Special Olympics competition must have a primary diagnosis of mental retardation. They are classified according to a process called divisioning in which athletes are grouped by ability levels for competition. In team handball, divisioning is based upon scores from the four Team Handball Skills Assessment Tests, namely the spot shot, speed pass, dribble, and power throw, as well as the results from early round play. For more information, consult the Special Olympics rules at http://www.specialolympics.org
