more than one type of handball
I suspect that there is more than one type of handball. For instance, there was a game played by French monks colled "jeu de paume" (supposed to translate "game of the palm (of the hand)", my French is rusty) that was played in a similar fasion to racketball and is believed to be a predecessor of modern tennis.
Ah, the text i wrote only pertains to the olympic sport. Please add entries for other sports called handball, if you have any info! Anders T¶rlind
That's right, there's more than one type of handball. The Olympic sport is usually referred to as 'Team handball', while there's another sport which involves single players. I believe the sport is somewhat similar to many racket games Jheijmans
I second that. I know of two other forms of handball which are not variations of the olympic sport. One similar to Squash except without the racquet. The other is played in school yards throughout Australia on grid of either 2 or 4 squares painted on concrete or bitumen. Sort of like a scaled down version of tennis with no racquets. You use a tennis ball and the ball must bounce in your square once on it's return to your oponent's square. Each of the four squares represent a ranking of King, Queen, Jack and Dunce. When someone is beaten, s/he is sent to dunce and all player s/he outranked move up a rank. The goal is to stay in King. If more than 4 players are present, only a 'King' is sent to dunce. Any other players would be sent off the court and a reserve player will start in dunce.

    Mr. Numbers:
Phelps was absolutely amazing. The swimming was generally a lot of fun to watch. I'm sure track will suck me in too. The Olympics always make me wonder why I don't really watch those sports any other time. It's not because those sports aren't good for spectatorspeople really get into swimming and track during the Olympics. I'd have to guess that it is the Olympics themselves that sabotage those sports. Such a big stage, once every four years, do or die in so many cases. Every other swimming or track meet just seems so diminished by comparison. That said, I look forward to seeing what Phelps can do in four years. Anything less than 45 medals will be a disappointment. (My wife just chimed in and said something about how next time maybe all the swimmers could find some suits that actually cover the entirety of their butt cracks. She has a point-—more than once I’ve wondered if some of these guys work in the plumbing department at Home Depot.)

I actually think that what will make LeBron legitimately great is that he came in with Carmello and Dwyane Wade and that these three will feed each other in much the way that Bird and Magic did and is something that Jordan simply never had. The fact is, looking at the numbers and what they did for their positions – Magic being able to play all five positions on the court, Larry being clearly the greatest passing forward of all time – those two are not behind Jordan by too far, but Jordan was so much better than his contemporaries that it elevated him all the more. Lebron and Carmello and Dwyane (and please, take a look at those names for a second and ask yourself how that confluence happened – within a year or so of one another mothers of this generation’s future superstars said “‘Carmello’ – now that’s a boy’s name!” or “’Dwyane’ – now that’s a name you can set a clock by!”)

THE COMPETITION The 12 men's teams and ten women's teams are split into two even pools, each team having to play every other in the pool. The top four teams from each pool then advance to the quarter-finals. The quarter-final winners advance to semi-finals, while the four losing teams play each other again to decide fifth to eighth place. The losing semi-finalists play for the bronze. The game is played on a court 40 metres long and 20 metres wide, divided in two by a centre line and having a goal at either end. The goal is three metres wide and two metres high. The goal area is D-shaped, the arc six metres out from the goal mouth. The free throw line, a dotted line, forms an arc three metres further out into the court. The leather ball weighs between 425g and 475g for men and between 325g and 400g for women. A game consists of 30-minute halves with a ten-minute break at half-time. The game starts, and post-goal play resumes, with a throw-off; a player stands with one foot on the centre line and throws the ball to a team-mate behind the line at least three metres away. Goals are hard to score in that nobody but the goalkeeper is allowed in the goal area. Players may use any part of their bodies except their lower legs and feet to handle the ball, though they are not allowed to throw the ball to themselves; more than one touch of the ball must be part of a continuous movement such as a dribble. Players can hold the ball for only three seconds before passing, dribbling or shooting, they must take no more than three steps with the ball, and can take only three further steps during a dribble.

Russia won gold in 2000 - a fourth win for former Soviet Union states Handball was first played in Germany in the late 19th century.
In the early 20th century the game spread across the border into Denmark, and evolved on its route north. While the German game consisted of 11 players, the Danes developed a version with only seven in a team. Handball made its Olympic debut as an outdoor demonstration sport at the Berlin Olympics, where Germany beat Austria in the final. That was an 11-a-side tournament, but since the sport was re-introduced in 1972, coincidently also in Germany at the Munich Olympics as a seven-player event, the game's founders have struggled to match that success. The tournament was only open to men and Yugoslavia took gold ahead of Czechoslovakia and Romania.

Russia claims team handball gold by denying Sweden
Latest: Sunday October 08, 2000 05:54 PM Odd Anderson/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) Russia defeated world champion Sweden 28-26 on Saturday to win the gold medal in men's handball. Alexander Tuchkin had seven goals, and goalkeeper Andrei Lavrov recorded some spectacular saves as Russia used a 6-0 run to take over the contest. Russia's win denied Sweden the chance to become the first non-East European team to win gold since handball returned to the Olympics in 1972. The Soviet Union and the Unified Team won three Olympic golds. Sweden lost its third straight Olympic final. Antonio Ortega and Rafael Guijosa scored six goals apiece as Spain beat Yugoslavia 26-22 to win its second straight Olympic bronze medal. In a high-quality game between the two top-ranked teams in the world, Russia and Sweden swapped leads through the first period, with no team leading by more than one goal. Sweden took a 14-13 lead into the second half.

History
Handball is considered one of the oldest games in the history of sport. References in Homer's Odyssey provide evidence of a game similar to Handball, which was played on the island of the Faiakes (Corfu). Another sign is a 3rd century BC bronze statuette found in Dodoni, showing a boy carrying a ball in his hand. Depictions of humans playing a 'primitive' form of Handball are also found on a marble plaque found at the Athens Acropolis, dating to about 600 B.C. In Roman years, the game then called "arpaston”, spread to the people of Germany and France. We come across a detailed description of it by the French author, Rabelais, around AD1500. At the end of the 19th century, Handball in its present form appeared in Denmark, Germany and Czechoslovakia, as a training sport for gymnasts and a fitness tool for football players during their off season. The Swedes, to whom the name of the game is attributed, adopted regulations similar to those of football around 1910. At the Berlin Olympiad in 1936, Handball made its debut to the public as an exhibition sport in an open stadium, with two teams of 11 players each. Handball was officially incorporated into Olympic Games competition in Munich in 1972. It was held in an indoor court measuring 20x40m with teams of seven players.

NI_MPU('middle'); Denmark won its third consecutive Olympic title in women's handball Sunday, defeating South Korea 4-2 in penalty throws after a 34-34 tie at the end of two overtime periods. Danish goalkeeper Karin Oernhoej Mortensen had two saves, and Henriette Mikkelsen scored the decisive goal in the dramatic penalty shoot-out. It marks the first time a nation has won three consecutive Olympic titles in the sport - men or women. "We know we made history. I can't believe it," Trine Jensen, the Danish left winger, said. And rival Lim O-kyeong, South Korea's centre back added: "It was the most exciting game in handball history." The two nations have split the title in the past five games, with Denmark also winning in 1996 and 2000, and South Korea in 1988 and 1992. The final was a rematch of the 1996 Atlanta games, which Denmark also won, 37-33 in extra time.
