Olympic Team Handball Medalists
History
Team handball was on the Olympic program at Berlin in 1936, as an outdoor sport with 11 players per team. Then it disappeared until 1952, when it was a demonstration sport. In 1972, the indoor version, which has seven players a team, became a men's Olympic sport. The women's sport was added in 1976. Teams are divided into two pools to play round robin tournaments, with the top four teams from each pool advancing into a single elimination medal round. The score shown is the final score of the gold medal game. From 1976 until 1988, women's medals were decided by a round robin tournament only. For those years, the won-lost record of the gold medal team is shown. Top of page

History
Team handball is very popular in much of the world, but little known in North America. Its very name is confusing even to an American who knows quite a bit about sports. The modern game actually grew out of three sports that were developed, independently, in three different European countries: The Czech hazena , the Danish handbold , and the German Torball All three were based on soccer, but essentially replaced the foot with the hand, so that the ball could be advanced by batting or throwing, rather than by kicking. Hazena was being played by Slovak peoples as early as 1892; its rules were first codified in 1906, by a college professor. Handbold (the Danish word for handball) was developed in 1898 by a teacher, Holger Nielsen, as an alternative to soccer. In 1906, Nielsen revised the rules considerably and began organizing competitions outside the school at which he taught. Similarly, Torball was created in 1915 by a German gymnastics teacher, Max Heiden.

The goals are surrounded by a near-semicircular line that is generally six meters away from the goal. There is also a dashed near-semicircular line that is nine meters away from the goal. Only the defending goalkeeper is allowed to step inside the six meter perimeter, though any player may attempt to catch and touch the ball in the air within it. If a player should find himself in contact inside the goal perimeter he must immediately take the most direct path out of it. Should a defender make contact with an attacker while in the goal perimeter, their team is penalized with a direct attempt at the goal, with only one attacker on the seven-meter line and the defending goalkeeper involved. History Team Handball originated in Europe in the1900s and recognizes over 140 countries as members of the International handball Federation (IHF). Handball first appeared in the Olympics in the 1936 Berlin Games as an outdoor sport, with 11 players on a side. It was not played again at the Olympic games until 1972, where it was played indoors with 7 players on each side. Women’s handball was added to the Olympic Games in 1976. Simplified Rules of the Game Object of the Game Handball combines the elements of soccer and basketball, as six players move the ball down a floor that is larger than a basketball court and try to score by throwing the ball past a goalkeeper into the net. A successful scoring attempt results in the award of a single point. Typical final scores in this action-packed game run in the mid twenties. A regulation game is played in 30 minute halves with one team timeout per half. A coin toss determines which team starts the game with a throw-off. The clock stops only for team timeouts, injuries, and at the referee’s discretion.

Hands Across Europe

Euros can't get enough of team handball.
By Robert Weintraub
Posted Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at 2:26 PM PT
Balding, middle-aged men wearing headbands don't dominate Olympic handball. The sport's venue isn't even the Coney Island boardwalk. Rather, team handball is a peculiar amalgamation of soccer, hockey, lacrosse, and basketball that doesn't really resemble any of those sports at all. It's probably most like water polo without the water. Despite the game's TV-friendly pace, handball's sheer Euro-nuttiness means it gets less airtime than archery or equestrian (both the men's and women's gold-medal matches will be shown live on Sunday, though). A handball court is completely inscrutable to the layman, with lots of painted areas and dashed lines at random intervals. But what really troubles the American eye is that it seems like the players should be called for walking every time. Of course, that's under basketball rules (well, perhaps not the NBA). In handball, you're allowed three steps without dribbling. On the other hand, you're only allowed to hold the ball for three seconds, so teams are ceaselessly running and passing, making the sport much more frenetic than hoops or soccer. While play looks somewhat random, there are set positions. Middle backcourt players feed the tall and rangy shooters and the shorter, more agile wings, who contort themselves to convert sharply angled shots. The grunts are the circle runners who prowl the 6-meter line setting screens for the playmakers. No player can set foot inside the 6-meter circle that surrounds the net, meaning that shooters need to jump from outside the line and whip the small ball to score—imagine the old Roger Staubach jump pass, with more hangtime and herky-jerky body movement.
