Abstract: The aim of the present thesis was, to evaluate local anaesthesia as an anaesthetic technique when performing knee arthroscopies, from a clinical and economical point of view, and to describe the total costs for surgery of knee injuries caused by sport activities in Stockholm. Furthermore the cost saving for an arthroscopy in local anaesthesia was SEK 1 011 per procedure compared to an arthroscopy in general or spinal anaesthesia with our described setup. The total hospital stay for patients was significantly lower for patients with local anaesthesia compared to both general and spinal anaesthesia. To determine health care costs for sports related knee surgery, we used data from three different databases – an insurance company database including all players in the studied sports (football, floor ball, European team handball and ice hockey), the hospital patient record database and data from a county database containing information about all surgical procedures performed in Stockholm. The average knee surgery cost for all studied players in the population was SEK 108 in 1997.

Analysis of Selected Physical and Performance Attributes of the United States Olympic Team Handball Players: Preliminary Study
By Brian Bergemann, Ph.D.
Campbell University
During the Spring of 1995, prior to the Olympic Games in Atlanta, the United States Team Handball team and coaches came to the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, AL for testing. Dr. Thomas P. Rosandich, president of the U.S. Team Handball Federation, and the president of the United States Sports Academy hosted the testing at the Alabama campus. Testing of the athletes consisted of laboratory tests of maximum oxygen uptake, computerized strength measures, blood tests, etc., and a battery of field tests that included assessments of physical characteristics, and physical performance components. This paper reports the results of the field test battery. Skills test batteries have been used in physical education and in sport to assess various components of the skills of players. These assessments served the teacher and coach to determine a player's level of ability, or their progress, weaknesses and strengths. These test batteries for sports performance usually dealt with the physical fitness components like strength and endurance, or the motor skills components, like speed, agility, power, or accuracy.

Do you actually use the locker room at the gym?
SL: No. So what? My house is three doors down from the gym. There is no reason for me to be obsessed with being in the locker room all the time. Do you think some people really are obsessed with the locker room?
Do you consider yourself a jock?
Is it popular in the U.S.?
SL: I felt this need to do more sports. I can do these pickup games but I thought it would be nice to have something absolutely set that I had to go to. I saw you limping around campus recently. Did you have a rough team handball class?
Was it the same ankle both times?
So you sacrifice organ playing for intramural athletics.
Can you play the organ with two sprained ankles?
Can you tell us about organist frisbee? If the physics majors took on the English majors in basketball, who would win?
