Preparing Lectures
Being in the same room with someone saying something is not equivalent to learning it. Students must engage the material to retain it. Also, given that students' attention span is around 15 to 20 minutes long and university classes last 50 to 75 minutes, you need to do something to control their attention. Lectures should be punctuated with periodic activities. Many IU instructors report that when they intersperse short lectures with active engagement for students for as brief a time as two to five minutes, students seem to become re-energized for the next 15- to 20-minute mini-lecture.

In her recent study of college science instruction, Sheila Tobias [19] defines two tiers of entering college students, the first consisting of those who go on to earn science degrees and the second those who have the initial intention and the ability to do so but instead switch to nonscientific fields. The number of students in the second category might in fact be enough to prevent the shortfall of American scientists and engineers that has been widely forecast for the coming decade. The thrust of Tobias's study is that introductory science courses are responsible for driving off many students in the second tier. The negative features of the courses she cites include their (1) failure to motivate interest in science by establishing its relevance to the students' lives and personal interests; (2) relegation of students to almost complete passivity in the classroom; (3) emphasis on competition for grades rather than cooperative learning; and (4) focus on algorithmic problem-solving as opposed to conceptual understanding. Recent educational research provides theoretical support for Tobias's assertions, which are based largely on anecdotal accounts. The research shows that students are characterized by significantly different

February 18-20, 2006 - Washington, DC
The third-annual Conference on Teaching and Learning in Political Science will be held in downtown Washington, DC on February 18-20, 2006. Through this special annual meeting of "working groups", APSA continues to promote greater understanding of cutting-edge approaches, techniques, and methodologies that can be applied in the political science classroom. This meeting provides a forum to develop models on teaching and learning as well as to discuss broad themes and values affecting political science education. Meeting Format
Using a working-group model, meeting will consist of 12 tracks constructed around such themes as:
  • Assessment/Learning Outcomes
  • Internationalizing the Curriculum
  • Diversity and Inequality
  • Teaching Research Methods
  • Community-Based Learning
  • Simulations and Role Play
  • Teaching with Technology
To spark conversation, presenters will make brief presentations on a topic related to their track theme. Individuals interested in applying to participate as presenters should submit a proposal on an idea or model for teaching and learning in political science as it relates to one of the themes listed above. Proposals should be submitted online through the above MyAPSA link by September 26, 2005. (

General Principles for Teaching ELL Students
Language acquisition theories have highlighted four key principles that can be directly applied to the mainstream classroom. These principles are important for all students, but are of particular importance to English language learners (Jameson, 1998). Increase Comprehensibility Increase Interaction Increase Thinking/Study Skills
A Sampling of Teaching Strategies
Below we list some strategies and approaches that numerous evidence-based sources suggest may be beneficial for students learning English as a second language. We advise the reader, however, that researchers have not found conclusive evidence that individual strategies will lead to higher student achievement or increased English proficiency. Although evidence-based research exists, methods of collecting the evidence vary. Much of the current research is based on surveys, case studies, correlational studies, and a few control-group studies. In educational settings, it has been difficult, if not impossible, to conduct random assignment studies. For more information on implementing these strategies in the classroom and the research-base of the effectiveness of the strategies, consult the resources listed in the Resources and References sections.
