(An Alternative Method) Touching upon Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry.
The great pedagogical principle is to lead the student from the familiar to the unfamiliar. In grammar school science the students have learned about such fundamental concepts as atoms, and about living beings including DNA and genes. Thus, let's see how we can start with that foundation and do a classic reductionist approach, no unlike figuring out the principles of a clock by taking it about and seeing how each of the parts works. "Here is a tree. Is it one or more than one atom? What are the parts of a tree trunk biochemically? Ah, cellulose. What must cellulose look like - round and granular or long and fibrous? What happens when you chew on a popsickle stick for a long time? Ah, long, and fibrous! On the blackboard, let's draw one of them, represented by a line. Now this line might also represent a muscle fiber, or a DNA molecule. Is it one or more than one atom?" Thus the concepts of polyatomic structures are imprinted.
Next we can turn to two other grammar school science concepts - magnetism and electricity. Although there is a great deal of fuzziness in understanding, the students already know about the two magnetic poles, N and S, and that we have electricity in "positive" and "negative" forms, such as we seemingly have in our household sockets. Combining these two concepts we can put some plusses and minuses onto the line on the blackboard, and introduce another word that they may have heard - "ion" - from TV ads about a type of air purifiers. But now you can refine their concept by mentioning that the charged line on the blackboard now represents a "polyatomic" "ion" - actually, a polyionic molecule.

ETC.: A Review of General Semantics December, 2004 by Catherine Minteer THIS QUESTION has been asked: If it were possible to adapt a system of semantic training for children, could it be given at the elementary level? Our answer to this question is based on the results of experiments conducted in Chicago schools during a three-year period. Three hundred seventh- and eighth-grade students at the Nettelhorst School were taught a series of lessons adapted from the materials and methods that have proved so inspiring to Dr. Irving Lee's classes in general semantics at Northwestern University. Our classes ranged in size from forty-two to forty-eight students each. The chronological ages ranged from ... Want to read the whole article? You can

  • There is no place on the application to indicate where you wish to student teach. You will do this later during the placement process . You will have an appointment with the placement area coordinator to discuss your individual needs and requests. It is the policy of the College of Education to place you in a school other than the ones you have attended to provide you with the opportunity to have a more diverse student teaching experience. Please do not plan to student teach in a school where a close relative is a teacher or administrator. Requests for out-of-area and out-of-state placements must be made one year in advance, submitted in writing and approved by Henry McCarthy, Assistant Dean (phone 262-2109). Do not attempt to make your own placement! Do not contact a school, principal, or teacher and request student teaching with them without prior approval of the Director of Field Experiences.

Promoting excellence in teaching general practice
The first RCGP international course for teachers of general practice (Nov 1996)
by Dr John Howard FRCGP and Prof Rosslynne Freeman (Course Organisers)
The RCGP has been supporting the development of effective learning and teaching of our discipline, both formally through the establishment of international fellowships, and through many informal contacts. The need to demonstrate the increasing professionalism of the educational structure and process of the learning and teaching of general practice is shared by colleagues in other countries together with need for accountability and resulting outcomes in health care. This changing climate brought a new initiative from the Royal College - the first international course for teachers of general practice. To achieve a more meaningful outcome, to a defined standard of postgraduate education, the course is being academically validated, which will enable participants to gain recognition through the award of a postgraduate certificate, then working towards a diploma and even a masters degree in learning and teaching. This was achieved by the validation of the course participants' work by De Montfort University, Leicester.

Laboratory Teaching General Information
The chemists in the forest products area have a significant role in the modern process technology. The knowledge in chemical reactions and in physical chemistry is needed to understand the unit processes of forest products production. Especially modern ecological less water and chemicals consuming industry is demanding high-level knowledge in chemical phenomenons. Black liquor has been traditionally studied to develop by-products. The best known these kind of products are tall oil soap, tall oil and sitosterol. Other high tech products refined by chemists are xylitol from birch, cellulose derivatives like viscose, rayon and cellophane. The "tailoring" of wood fibre surfaces for special papers has recently become more and more important task. The graduating chemist from the department of Forest Products will develop more ecological processes and refine new innovative main and by-products. Forest Products Chemistry is focusing on wood chemistry, analytical chemistry of wood components and surface and colloid chemistry in forest products technology. Education covers almost totally the area of forest products chemistry and physical chemistry of forest products. Studies contain lectures and practical exercising works. The teaching professors have a strong background in teaching and in research. Visiting research scientists complements the lectures. Studying is including also working experience in the forest products industry or research centre. Well-paid jobs can be find from Finland and other countries. Graduated Masters of Science are employed for research, developing and managing tasks.

Laboratory Teaching General Information
Environmental Technology within Process Industry can be studied as a major or a minor subject. The students majoring in the subject are mainly from the Department of Forest Products Technology. Students studying the subject as a minor subject are often also from the Department of Chemical Technology and other departments of Helsinki University of Technology. The starting point for teaching is that the student should master the subjects in his/her own field of study. The management of environmental hazards in industry requires a knowledge of the production process so that opportunities for cooperation on environmental hazard management arising during operations can be identified which lead to impact reductions. It is not enough to simply study environmental protection. Getting placed in work is also facilitated by comprehensive training.
The objectives of teaching are at present the following:
  • that the subjects of one's own main field of study (wood processing, chemistry etc.) must be studied adequately.

The article presents some aspects on the use of computer in teaching general relativity for undergraduate students with some experience in computer manipulation. The article presents some simple algebraic programming (in REDUCE+EXCALC package) procedures for obtaining and the study of some exact solutions of the Einstein equations in order to convince a dedicated student in general relativity about the utility of a computer algebra system.
