Introduction
With large numbers of student assessments to be managed there are advantages for lecturers to use computer managed learning (CML) systems for assessment and student tracking. If lecturers are to use CML as one part of their assessment program, it is important that they use effectively all of the information available. Computer managed learning systems are software packages with several common features, including the ability to generate tests from banks of questions, marking of tests generated, statistical analysis of the results, keeping records of students' marks and progress. Feedback to students on their responses is common. CML systems usually have the ability to hold many banks of questions, each of which can be categorized into smaller components, such as topics, learning outcomes or objectives. Often questions can also be coded on a variety of characteristics, for example, degree of difficulty and cognitive content. The key function of a CML system is to generate tests. It has a template or a coursemap where the parameters used to generate any test are stored. Options for the generation of any test can vary. Tests may be generated using the same questions for all students, others may be set to select questions randomly but take them from specific parts of the bank of questions. In this case, students are more likely to have unique tests, depending on the number of questions available for selection.

About Undergraduate Assessment
The quality of education is a national concern. For more than ten years, parents, the public at large, and legislators have debated the effectiveness of the American educational system. They are all concerned about the answers to questions like these: 1. What do students need to learn to be productive members of society? 2. Are students developing the skills needed to achieve their personal goals? 3. Is the educational system providing a program of studies relevant to life in the next century? As an integral part of the Center for Teaching and Learning, assessment at UIS is designed to fit the specific educational needs and interests of students and faculty. Assessment staff administer the entrance and exit assessment tests, forward test results to students and their advisers, and work closely with faculty in evaluating student writing samples. The purpose is to evaluate specific learning skills, track student progress through the educational experience at UIS, and provide meaningful feedback to students, faculty, and programs. Besides giving students information on their academic strengths and weaknesses, the information gained in the process helps programs review their curricula and evaluate their effectiveness. Through these activities, assessment can help UIS find answers to the questions posed above.

Abstract
This paper describes how the 'quiz' facility in WebCT, one of the leading names in 'virtual learning environments', is used, inter alia, to provide a series of short 'required tests'. These can be taken up to three times and together contribute a small percentage of marks towards module assessment. Tests motivate students, in a non-threatening way, to use notes and other resources (possibly provided via WebCT), and the system can provide immediate feedback. The paper describes the various forms of quiz question available in WebCT, including multiple choice. The other forms such as matching and multi-response questions are much less time-consuming to prepare. The final section relates the use of quizzes to aspects of good practice described by Graham Gibbs (2002) in a lecture on 'Thinking Radically about Assessment - Reducing Marking and Improving Learning'.

our response assessment, testing and reporting 3-14
We are committed to ensuring that every young person receives the best education possible. The interests of the pupil will always come first and the developments proposed here, for assessment, testing and reporting policy for 3-14 year olds, reflect this. Since 2002, the Assessment is for Learning development programme has sought ways of developing practice in assessment. Good feedback is essential to inform improvement at all levels in the education system, and the programme is built upon this principle. The framework to support this has three linked parts: assessment FOR learning, which is concerned with day-to-day classroom interactions and feedback that are focused on the learner and sensitive to his or her individual needs; assessment AS learning, where pupils' participation in assessment and reflecting on their learning helps them to becomes better learners; and assessment OF learning, which is concerned with determining how much individuals or groups have learned, at what level, and how well. In order for a system to work, these aspects need to complement and support each other. Our proposed actions are designed to enable this to happen.

This consultation paper sets out proposals which aim to:
  • Ensure the highest educational standards in all schools Introduce more meaningful yet equally rigorous ways of assessing pupils Give parents and pupils more meaningful reports on progress Provide more time for teachers to teach and put more trust in their professional judgement Reduce unnecessary pressures on teachers and pupils
The Assessment is for Learning development programme has already made some progress in shifting the emphasis towards assessment to support learning. In Educating for Excellence , the response to the National Debate, clear commitments were given to move away from assessment which simply grades pupils at each stage to assessment which helps pupils understand how they can improve. These commitments were re-iterated in

Information about how to indentify possible dyslexia in a pupil: The criteria most commonly used in assessment is the disparity (difference) between a pupil's intelligence and their actual achievement. If a pupil you teach appears to speak and listen normally, yet they are unable to read and spell, then there may be more to check out. Some of the well-known symptoms of dyslexia are:
  • confusion over the direction letters face (b/d, p/9, p/q);
  • difficulties with left and right;
  • difficulties with keeping organized;
  • difficulties with spelling
  • difficulties with directions (e.g. east and west);
  • missing out words when reading.
More information What causes dyslexia To be quite honest, nobody quite knows at the moment. There has been a real increase in the amount of information available through research, and a number of possibilities are beginning to emerge, but the waters are still fairly murky. The overall picture is that

    Teaching to the Test
    By Lloyd Bond WHAT DO YOU THINK? Carnegie Conversations provides a public forum where you can engage publicly with the author and read and respond to what others have to say. Join the conversation A recurring criticism of tests used in high-stakes decision making is that they distort instruction and force teachers to "teach to the test." The criticism is not without merit. The public pressure on students, teachers, principals, and school superintendents to raise scores on high-stakes tests is tremendous, and the temptation to tailor and restrict instruction to only that which will be tested is almost irresistible. Although many view teaching to the test as an all or none issue, in practice it is actually a continuum. At one extreme, some teachers examine the achievement objectives as described in their state's curriculum and then design instructional activities around those objectives. This is done without regard to a particular test. At the other extreme is the unsavory and simply dishonest practice of drilling students on the actual items that will appear on the tests.

FCAT Science is administered annually to students in the fifth, eighth, and eleventh grades. In the fourth, eighth, and tenth grade, students take an FCAT Writing exam (formerly called " Florida Writes! The FCAT tests have come under fire from education groups, which accuse Governor Jeb Bush of teaching students how to pass a test, rather than teaching students material in the core subjects of English mathematics social studies , and science . They claim that test is designed such that students who know what to look for in the questions get the right answers, even if they lack actual knowledge about the subject. Students' results from this test are compiled to generate a rank for each school under Governor Bush's A+ Plan . Under this plan, schools receive a grade from A to F, depending on student performance and the degree to which the school has improved compared to its past performances. The higher a school scores, the more funding it receives. The system is designed to reward schools for excellence in teaching; however, the program has been criticized by some educators and community members, who claim that program takes funding from schools which need it most, and giving it to those which don't.

These are sample questions in a new breed of exams the so-called "high-stakes tests" that are being used more and more in states across the country in an effort to prove that teachers are teaching and students are learning. Related story: Pennsylvania's tests growing teeth And if they're not, there are consequences. While the full consequences of these high-stakes tests won't be known for some years, in most states they now determine whether a student advances to the next grade or graduates from high school; whether a teacher or principal keeps a job or merits bonus pay; whether a school is praised or punished by a state takeover. As deadlines for imposing penalties get closer, several state education officials already are considering changes because they're concerned that students will be punished for the failings of their schools or the improper use of tests.

Summative Evaluation The first, and probably most obvious, reason for assessment is to provide to all interested parties a clear, meaningful, and useful summary or accounting of how well a student has met the teacher's objectives. INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT If you are a teacher or a special needs co-ordinator (SENCo) and you are concerned about a child in your school you may consider referring the child for a psychological assessment through the Local Education Authority. A full psychological assessment will establish a child's strengths and weaknesses and will help in planning an effective teaching programme with a specialist teacher. An assessment will also provide a detailed diagnosis of dyslexia or related difficulties and the psychologist will be able to give recommendations as to what can be done to help, when appropriate. It may be that the child's difficulties are not regarded as severe enough to recommend assessment with an educational psychologist. However, we feel that children who are experiencing difficulties at school will benefit from an assessment, in order to ascertain the reasons for their difficulties and to ensure that the right kind of help is received as soon as possible.
