I will always remember the horror of receiving my chemistry result when I was thirteen years old. I knew it wasn't going to be high, but to come bottom of the class was very upsetting. It was all made worse by the fact that the chemistry teacher read the results to the whole class, from first to last place. My humiliation was complete. Students can have very negative reactions towards tests and it's no surprise when they too may have had experiences like this.
Why testing doesn't work
There are many arguments against using tests as a form of assessment:
  • Some students become so nervous that they can't perform and don't give a true account of their knowledge or ability Other students can do well with last minute cramming despite not having worked throughout the course Once the test has finished, students can just forget all that they had learned

Testing and learning

Testing is very common in the classroom. But what exactly is the purpose of a test? Are they designed to help students learn or to provide evidence of learning? Can tests in fact have a negative effect on learning? There is a related article on this topic which you may like to read before considering this point: Testing helps learning. Result s of voting

Tests are important in determining the students' learning achievements in the classroom; at the same time they also help teachers to monitor his/her teaching methods in the classroom. One must be careful not to take a test just to evaluate a student and his/her academic learning achievements. In order to be cautious of this common tendency (to judge a student) schools should have some sort of test policies for all teachers to follow. I am thankful to the BBC for providing this valuable information network. I hope many teachers try to use the information provided here and use it in their schools or share with their colleagues.

Online assessment in practice: Manolis Mavrikis (Edinburgh) WALLIS is a web-based Interactive Learning Environment that is being developed in the School of Mathematics at Edinburgh University and is currently used to support mainstream teaching of first year students. WALLIS contains interactive activities, self testing material as well as summative assessment, using MAPLE to validate students' answers. Its core engine has a design inspired by research in the AIED (Artificial Intelligence in Education) field and provides lively feedback that targets students' actions and answers. Following a brief description of the system, the talk will focus on aspects of students' interactions as well as the results of a carefully designed pilot where the software is used to replace standard teaching and assessment.

Issues of Assessment in Testing Children Under Age Eight
by Gwen G. Stevens and Karen DeBord
Abstract: There are differing opinions about the value of using standardized tests to assess the abilities and knowledge of young children. Research with young children (under 8 years old) indicates that using standardized tests for student grade placement or school retention can prove to be harmful to children's ultimate achievements. This article describes the multiple methods that can appropriately be used to evaluate student progress while shaping assessment policies that represent age-appropriate learning goals without using "high-stakes" accountability testing of individual children prior to third grade. Using standardized tests to assess the abilities and knowledge of young children is viewed differently among educators, parents, politicians, and members of the community. Tests that are valid and reliable are extremely important tools when they are used to determine or to assure proper treatment for a child's special learning needs. However, research with young children (under 8 years old) indicates that using standardized tests for student grade placement or school retention can prove to be harmful to children's ultimate achievements. Designing assessment systems Across the nation, school districts are selecting from among standardized measures, school district designed group-administered measures, and open-ended subjectively scored tests to make decisions about school or teacher accountability and student placement.

Mark Conley Addresses Standards in his New Book and Provides Teachers with a Road Map for Navigating the Complex Terrain of Educational Requirements Making Standards Work for You
Published standards, no matter how well designed, are no substitute for your solid judgment, as a teacher, based on knowledge about teaching and a good understanding of your children. Responding to the calls for teaching to higher-level standards will never be as simple as picking up a book of standards, selecting a few, and then ‘covering’ them with your students. Standards-based teaching and assessment requires decision making about what is appropriate for students in different content areas and at various developmental levels, and it requires considering the diversity of children in background, skill, and motivation. Standards-based teaching and assessment means using what you know to design from scratch, select, interpret, reinvent, and apply standards in ways that will lead your students to higher levels of learning.

var loc = "../../../"; What are the uses and misuses of tests? Do higher test scores mean better schools? How does the intense pressure to raise test scores affect the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom? These are some of the questions FRONTLINE set out to explore in interviews with educators, policymakers, and educational testing experts across the country. What we found is that although standards-based reform has widespread support, experts see a danger in our reliance on standardized tests as the primary measure of school quality. Without the right kinds of tests, they say, and without an understanding of their proper uses, we may do more harm than good to public education in America.
In the course of making "Testing Our Schools," correspondent John Merrow and producer John Tulenko interviewed teachers and school administrators who are grappling with the realities of increased testing and its effects for better and worse on the quality of teaching and learning. Here are excerpts from selected interviews with educators in two states, Virginia and California, where testing has already transformed what goes on in the classroom.
"Today we are rushing headlong in search of the 'Holy Grail' of rising test scores," writes John Merrow. "Many unfortunate decisions are being made as pressure for 'accountability' overwhelms common sense." This excerpt from Merrow's new book

Assessment
Assessment plays an important role in the education of English language learners. When ELLs with diverse linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds enter new educational settings, an initial assessment of their skills and abilities helps educators provide appropriate placement and instruction. Ongoing assessment of student learning provides continuous feedback on the effectiveness of instruction and indicates areas where a change in instructional strategy may be advised. ELLs are required to participate in high-stakes testing programs, as a way of making schools, districts, and state education agencies accountable for their educational progress. Assessment of English language learners requires specialized knowledge. Information on this important subject is divided into 3 topic areas below. Click on a topic for answers to common questions in each assessment area.

Performance Assessment
WHAT IS IT? Performance assessment, also known as alternative or authentic assessment, is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list. For example, a student may be asked to explain historical events, generate scientific hypotheses, solve math problems, converse in a foreign language, or conduct research on an assigned topic. Experienced raterseither teachers or other trained staffthen judge the quality of the student's work based on an agreed-upon set of criteria. This new form of assessment is most widely used to directly assess writing ability based on text produced by students under test instructions. HOW DOES IT WORK? Following are some methods that have been used successfully to assess performance:
  • Open-ended or extended response exercises are questions or other prompts that require students to explore a topic orally or in writing. Students might be asked to describe their observations from a science experiment, or present arguments an historic character would make concerning a particular proposition. For example, what would Abraham Lincoln argue about the causes of the Civil War?
  • Extended tasks are assignments that require sustained attention in a single work area and are carried out over several hours or longer. Such tasks could include drafting, reviewing, and revising a poem; conducting and explaining the results of a science experiment on photosynthesis; or even painting a car in auto shop.

Language testing
Language testing is another area of research strength, led by Dr John Read, who is a recognised authority in the field. Research studies have concentrated on the testing of proficiency in English for academic purposes and the assessment of vocabulary knowledge. A current project which combines these two interests is The Lexical Dimension of the IELTS Speaking Test, funded by a grant from IELTS Australia to John Read and Paul Nation. The study, which is based on an analysis of audiorecordings of 100 candidates in the speaking module of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), is investigating the role played by vocabulary use in the performance of candidates at different proficiency levels. It focuses in particular on the incidence of formulaic sequences and the extent to which they may influence the way that the performance is rated.
