How To Have A Successful Parent / Teacher Conference What's All the Hype? Communication with parents or guardians is an essential for students' growth and learning. One means of communication is the Parent-Teacher Conference. It is a time for parents and teacher to discuss a student in a constructive and beneficial manner. This is not a time for criticism, anger, blaming, or negativism. Unless there is a tone of genuine concern for the student and openness to the feelings and thoughts of all present, there will be no successful outcome. Although the teacher may have an agenda for having a parent-teacher conference, the parents must have input in the agenda as it unfolds. The question is: Are you willing to share the agenda? Next

Goals for Parent Conferences:
1. To create a parent-teacher team with a shared agreement about the role of each partner in helping
the student to succeed in school and in life.
2. To provide a two-way communication opportunity that updates each partner on the "team" about the student's learning and behavior characteristics and history.
3. To establish a relationship that makes it easier for teacher or parents to initiate contact later on.
What parents perceive about their child at home may or may not correspond with teacher perceptions. If there are inconsistencies these can be important clues for teachers as we try to diagnose student problems and to seek ways to increase student motivation to learn. So...
YOU MAY WANT TO ASK THE PARENTS:
1. What are the student's spare time activites? Reading? Music? Socializing? Writing? 2. What examples the parents see at home of the student using math, art, info on other cultures, or asking about nature. Regardless of grade level, these clues can help you help the student. 3. What does the student say about school? The Teacher? Other students? Learning?

Kentucky's Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence has posted a guide to student-led conferences developed by Louisville's Conway Middle School and the Jefferson County Public Schools. This compact PDF version includes all the text and forms in the original but eliminates photos and other items that make for lengthy download times. Includes sections about goals; what parents, teachers and students need to know; typical questions and answers about the process; and forms, including a teacher evaluation checklist, a student self-evaluation, and much more. Student-Led Conferences: Tips for Educators How to Run Successful Parent-Team Conferences "Only by forming an alliance can parents and teachers effectively work together to help students negotiate the treacherous path through the middle school years," writes education professor and former middle grades teacher Howard M. Miller. "One potent tool for creating parent-teacher bonds at the middle level is the parent-team conference." ("Middle Matters" magazine, Fall 1998.) The Highs and Lows of Parent-Teacher Conferences
By Holly Holland Eric Walthall, a seventh-grader with brown hair and wire glasses, sits at a classroom conference table with his mother Tammy and his language arts teacher Dena Kent. Eyes cast downward and palms sweating, he's giving a report of his recent progress at Iroquois Middle School.
"I know I talk too much in school," he says to his mother. "I wanted you to hear this from me first. Other than that, I got pretty good grades."
Reading from his self-evaluation, Eric describes his goals: to do more independent reading, to become a veterinarian, to concentrate in class.
Kent congratulates him for his candor and his willingness to see his positive and negative traits. Then she gently asks him a series of questions designed to draw him out.
"You say you deserve an A in your (writing) portfolio, but you got a B," she says. After hesitating a moment, Eric admits that he has missed some assignment deadlines.
"Why is that, Eric?" Kent asks.

Making Parent-Teacher Conferences Work for Your Child
It's conference time!
Parents and teachers like to meet from time to time to discuss how to help students do their best in school. Children develop in different ways. They have their own individual personalities, and their own listening and work habits.
You are important
To help their students learn, teachers must know as much as they can about each child. No one knows more about your child than you, the parent. And no one has more influence over your child than you. This is why teachers need your help to do a first-class job. Working together, you and the teacher can help your child have a successful school year.
Here are some things to keep in mind...
  • Be there on time. Start the conference right: Be there on time, and plan not to run over the short amount of time that has been set aside. Work together. Conferences are successful when both teachers and parents work as partners to help children make progress. Talk to your children.

Strategies for Successful Parent Conferences
A period of high stress for all educators is Parent-Teacher conferences. There is nothing quite like teaching all day and then facing the parents of kids you've just been in mortal combat with for the past seven hours. Can we all say "splitting headache?" Most teachers start the meetings feeling tired and try their best to manage for the evening sessions. Some districts are starting to also provide a "day" session for parents because there are an increasing number of 2nd shift workers who are unable to make evening meetings. This has the advantage of letting the kids out of school for the day so teachers can rest up a little before the conferences. The first advice is a no brainer...get some rest. As simple as this sounds it cannot be overemphasized. How many of us are better at handling difficult situations when we are rested? My guess would be 100%. When you know you've got a difficult couple of days ahead, do yourself a favor and get some extra sleep. Not only will it make the parent-teacher conferences a lot more enjoyable in general but it will minimize the possibility of losing your cool with parents. When teachers (and people in general) are tired they are much more irritable and must less able to tolerate frustrating circumstances.

About The School Teacher- Parent(s) Conferences
At no time should you be in doubt of your child's progress. You are notified of his/her progress through deficiency notices and report cards. If you still have questions or feel that there has been a misunderstanding, please call the school for an appointment with the teacher or principal. Students who wish to talk with a teacher about any problem should request a conference with the teacher before or after school, or at a time convenient to both during the day. Teachers may also request conferences with a student in order to give or arrange individual help, or to clarify misunderstandings.
Appointments with School Personnel
Parents who wish to meet with the Principal, a teacher, or any member of the School Staff must contact the person to arrange a mutually convenient meeting time. For the sake of good order in the school, parents may not approach staff members during the school day without arranging an appointment beforehand. Staff members who wish to communicate with the parents of a student may do so by phone, letter or at a mutually convenient appointment. Teachers will not schedule an appointment at times that could conflict with teaching or supervisory duties. When appointments are made, both the parent and the staff member should be aware of the purpose of the conference so that all concerned may be appropriately prepared.

Work for Your Child
You've been asked to attend a regularly scheduled "report card" conference with your child's teacher. Or you've gotten a special note from your child's teacher asking to see you. In either case, you might be a little nervous. Well, relax. Teachers don't want to put parents on the spot. They just like to meet with parents from time to time to discuss how to help students do their best in school. All children learn in different ways. They have their own individual personalities, and their own listening and work habits. To help their students learn new knowledge and skills, teachers must know as much as they can about each child's likes and dislikes. No one knows more about these things than you, the parents. And no one has more influence over your children than you. That's why teachers need your help to do a first-class job. Working together, you and the teacher can help your child have a successful school year.

Teacher-Tested Tips: Conference Scheduling
Submitted by: Amanda Post (A to Z Teacher Stuff), Kindergarten When it comes to scheduling, I send home a form with students outlining all the time slots available for conferences. I instruct the parents to mark their top 3 preferences with a 1, 2, and 3, and to put an X on any times that will NOT work. Once all parents have returned the forms, I can put together a schedule that works for everyone. I can schedule in breaks for myself where needed, and accommodate parents' needs at the same time.
