Student-Led Parent Conferences Visit the Math Article Archive for more math-related content. Think of the last time you participated in a parent conference. For many teachers, it consists of sitting at a desk with a stack of report cards on one side and a schedule of fifteen- or twenty-minute appointments on the other. In the short time available, you try to describe what's on the report card and ask if the parent has any questions. By the eighth conference, you're tired and wondering, "Did I already say that?" While the conference is supposed to be about the child, in fact, the child is totally removed. More and more teachers are finding success with student-led parent conferences. Here students have the opportunity to reflect on and describe their learning. From both the teacher and their child, parents find out what and how their child is learning. In addition, teachers are able to educate parents about the complexity of learning and to remove the aura of secrecy that so often surrounds the assessment process. The goals of student-led parent conferences are:
  • Encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their academic performance.

Parent Conferences Parent Conferences are a traditional part of what we do. We would love to tell you that they always proceed smoothly, that the parents will love you for what you say, and that the result will be a tremendous positive change in the educational life of the student. Well, it is sometimes this way, yet with a lot of variation. We will start by offering the premise of conferences, followed by a description of the four main prominent forms of teacher parent conferences. Why parent conferences? Most teachers would agree that the parent has the right to know what is going on in the educational life of his or her student. Secondly, it is the right of the teacher to inform the parent or guardian of the students progress, or lack thereof, over a given period of time. And finally, it is the institutions right to expect a change or positive re-focus as a sub set of newly defined standards derived from this meeting. The result is a positive educational experience for the student. Types of Conferences? Generally, school conferences are what we refer to as (1) regular reporting conferences, (2) problem solving conference, (3) special information reporting conference and (4) spontaneous conference.

Professionally conducted parent-teacher conferences can prove a most valuable strategy for improving student classroom behavior as well as enhancing learning. Here are some ideas used by successful teachers to reap the maximum benefit from parent-teacher conferences.
    • Before the conference, plan what you hope to accomplish. What information do you want to share with the parent? What problems need solving? Do not overwhelm the parent. Settle on no more than two or three concerns to be addressed. A laundry list of complaints will only discourage or alienate them.
    • If you are requesting the conference in response to a specific problem with the child, allow some time to cool off before meeting with the parent. You'll be less emotionally charged and more objective after a couple of days. Remember, you are a professional educator.
    • When a student begins to misbehave in class, begin to keep an index card recording specific disturbances noted. Include the name, date, description of problem behavior, and action taken. Make your notes as soon after an incident as possible.

As with teaching, planning is critical to an effective conference. Here are some important steps to include:
    • Prepare a send-home that invites parents to meet with you, states the purpose of the conference, and lists potential times, including both afternoon and evening slots. Have parents call or send a note to reserve a time slot.
Note : When divorced parents share custody, don't forget to invite both. Decide upon the goals for the conference (one or two will do). Prepare an agenda that you share with parents before the conference. Include such topics as your general impression of the child, his or her progress in each academic area, standardized test scores, your goals for the child in each content area, and strategies you will use to meet goals. Plan (and write down) questions to ask, points to make, and suggestions to offer. Ask parents to bring to the conference a list of their child's strengths and weaknesses as they perceive them. (Include Sample Parent Conference Form for this purpose) Fill out the Sample Teacher Form (or one like it) listing the child's strengths and weaknesses and proposing action to be taken.

Be Organized Early On David Leckrone, Fourth Grade Teacher
"When we scheduled conferences, we sent a note home asking parents to tell us what they wanted to find out at the conference. For example: trouble with homework, social issues, note taking, test taking, making friends. We were then prepared to address parent concerns without being blind sided. " Before and During the Conference Paul, Intermediate Grade Teacher : Miami, Florida "Arrange for comfortable seating, with good ligthing and ventilation. Organize samples of the students' work and test results so that they are easily accessible and will complement the conference plan. Write down the topics you will discuss. While families are waiting to see you, give them folders of their children's work. Also, give them a newsletter with class poems, or students' works, and highlights of current events, etc. It makes waiting easier." Follow-up to Conferences Colleen, Middle School Teacher
