121. Lesson Plan Earth Day
Teaching plan for teachers of grades 4 6. Includes contact information for organizations that offer materials, information, and projects for protecting the environment.
http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlresources/units/Byrnes-celebrations/Earth Day- H
Mini-Unit Subtopic: Earth Day Grade levels: 4th through 6th Author: Becky Johnson Background: Our planet is a complex system of land, air, and water. Living things depend on each other and this system for existence. Over the thousands of years since life has existed on the earth, it has undergone some changes. The following are some of these changes: Many species became extinct before mankind made its appearance, however, since humans have existed on the earth, the extinction rate has risen dramatically. More than 4,000 species are currently considered threatened. Plant and animal life become endangered for many reasons. Forest depletion, hunting, and pollution are the most obvious factors. When an animal becomes endangered, dozens of other species can also become endangered. For example, elephants disappeared from southern Africa about 80 years ago because of hunters. Elephants continue to be hunted, mainly for their costly ivory tusks. The endangerment of elephants also has endangered such animals in their area as wildebeest and antelope who live off of the open-grassland which elephants create by eating their way through a jungle. Oxygen-producing trees and plants are being cut down for the purpose of growing foods, grazing livestock, making paper products, etc. The cutting down of forests puts forest wildlife at risk and decreases the oxygen in the air. It also defaces the natural beauty of the planet. Tropical rain forests are often cleared for farming. The soil in these forests are poor in nutrients, and within a few years the crops fail and the land is abandoned. New forests are cleared.

    2. What does PTO mean?
PTO typically stands for Parent Teacher Organization and is the general acronym for the 75% of groups that choose to remain independent of the PTA. Many independent groups refer to themselves as a PTO, others have acronyms such as HSA (Home School Association) or PCC (Parent Communication Council) or the like. All independent (not affiliated with the national PTA) fall under the PTO umbrella.
    3. What’s the difference between PTO and PTA?
In a nutshell, PTAs are local groups that affiliate with the national PTA. These groups pay dues to their respective state PTAs and to national PTA and they receive benefits from same. PTO is the general acronym for the many groups (PTOs, PCCs, HSAs, etc.) that choose to remain independent. PTOs are free to write their own bylaws and they can either: a) not charge dues at all (a nice touch to encourage involvement); or b) keep whatever dues they do charge at their school. While PTA (perhaps because of the Harper Valley song and movie) is the most well-recognized acronym to the general public, these days more than 75% of K-8 parent-teacher groups are actually independent PTOs. Of the more than 112,000 K-12 schools in the United States, fewer than 22,000 of those still have formally-affiliated PTA units.

    128. Teachers' Organizations Seek To Break Education Union Monopoly -- 06/28/1999

Teachers' Organizations Seek to Break Education Union Monopoly
    By Justin Torres
    CNS Senior Staff Writer
    28 June, 1999
(CNS) - Recently dismissed by American Federation of Teachers president Sandra Feldman as insignificant, non-union teachers' organizations are nonetheless a rapidly growing alternative to the AFT's and National Educational Association's power over issues like teacher's pay, charter schools, and curriculum revisions.
In right-to-work states like Georgia, Texas, and Missouri, union alternatives are larger than the state affiliates of the national teachers' unions - and in 22 states, they claim 220,000 members and growing.
These organizations, such as the 46,000 member Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE), the 94,000 member Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE), and the 42,000 member Missouri State Teacher's Association (MSTA) have come together to "provide teachers with a choice about whether or not to join their state union," Larry Comers of ATPE told CNSNews.com.

Teacher Organization's Resolutions Against the War United Teachers of Los Angeles Spring 2003 January 29, 2003 Moved, that UTLA join the County Federation of Labor and many other unions across the country in strenuously opposing the Bush administration's march toward war with Iraq, Further moved, that UTLA urge its members and affiliates, through motions, its web site and publications, to become involved with organizations working toward stopping the Bush administration's march toward war with Iraq. Further moved, that UTLA endorse the International Week of Anti-war Resistance from February 13-21, 2003, and encourage its membership to participate at whatever level they feel comfortable. Finally moved, that UTLA encourage the Board of Education to support a day of education about the war at schools throughout the district. Justification The United States and Britain have been bombing Iraq on a virtually continuous basis since the end of the Gulf War, and these bombings and UN sanctions imposed on Iraq have resulted in the deaths of more than 3/4 of a million innocent civilians. In seeking any pretext to overthrow the government of a sovereign nation, in violation of international law, the Bush administration is seeking to establish world dominance, based on the politics of oil.

    Competition and Teacher Representation
Most conservatives oppose monopolies in the production of goods and services. Such monopolies lead to higher costs and lower quality services than if there were competition to provide them. This point is a critical factor in support for vouchers, and it underlies a great deal of the current support for school choice. If it be assumed that competition is desirable from the consumer's standpoint, the situation regarding teacher representation in the bargaining law states is puzzling. Teacher unions are the producers of representation services; teachers are the consumers of them. In the thirty-nine bargaining law states, the NEA/AFT enjoy a monopoly on representation services; NEA/AFT affiliates rarely face a challenge from any other organization to represent teachers. The outcome is precisely what economic theory would predict in this situation. The NEA/AFT are huge bureaucracies that overcharge teachers a lot for low quality or unwanted services. This being the case, why is there no competition to represent teachers in collective bargaining? Why doesn't a lower cost but more effective teacher organization challenge NEA/AFT affiliates for bargaining rights?
