Organizations: An Opportunity
for Engineers
By Carolyn Koenig and Rosanna Lerma Table of Contents Introduction A frequent lament of K-12 teachers is the shortage of examples of real-world applications of science and math that will make course work come alive for the students. Math and science teachers’ organizations offer a vehicle for engineers to communicate their knowledge of applications of math and science fundamentals. At teachers’ meetings they can meet K-12 educators and learn informally of their needs and concerns. They can get a view of the educational resources available from commercial, nonprofit, and government sources. Teachers’ organizations are leaders in standards development, and they are tuned in to the political scene at both the national and local level. Engineers’ involvement with these organizations can spawn a wide variety of projects to support and enhance math, science, and technology education.

Welcome to the Frontpage Welcome to the 2005-2006 School Year. Written by Administrator Monday, 15 August 2005
It's time for another great year at Portageville Schools. Teachers: A hand-out will be put in your mailboxes today, Monday August 15th, that will inform you of all the technology related changes that have been made over the summer. Students: You will receive similar information when you pick up your schedules. I look forward to working with you this year. -Mr. Eidson Computer Security Written by Administrator Wednesday, 27 April 2005
As Portageville School District's Technology Coordinator I often am asked, by teachers, students, parents, and others in the community, what they should do to best protect themselves while operating their computers. The following is a small guide to what, in my opinion, is currently the best software and resources for computer security. Last Updated ( Thursday, 28 April 2005 )

  • First step - telephone call to the teacher/principal Follow up with an introductory letter Set up a meeting to discuss:
    • What can you do to help? What can you bring to the class? What is expected of you? Work with the teacher to select a curriculum/program. You may want to personalize your approach, focusing on what it is that you do. Work with the teacher to ensure that what you choose to present will fit well with the established curriculum. Establish a regular schedule of visits, e.g., every other Thursday morning. Establish a pattern of meetings with teacher and/or principal.
