Each One, Teach One: Teachers do you have a tip to share with other teachers about doing the History Fair? Send your suggestion to CMHEC and we will post it on our website. We are pleased to provide a suggestion for you and your students, courtesy of Donna Brown, Clinton Elementary School. She gives every student a copy of the Summary Statement Form at the beginning of the History Fair process so that they can keep notes as they do their research. When the students write their final version of the Summary Statement Form, they will have all the information at their fingertips! Additionally, Ms. Brown created a template of the SSF for her classroom's Word Processing program.

"Is it cool to know and do science? Can we create a Scientific Temper? Linking Scientists, College Faculty, K-12 Teachers and their Students in Collaborative Research."
Barbara Schulz is a Teacher Leader with the National Academy in the Center for Education and is leading the development and operation of the Teacher Advisory Council.
Barbara has a record of leadership in education. As President of the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT), she collaborated with Genentech, Inc. to support the professional development program and web site called Access Excellence (AE). As a strong advocate for educational outreach, Barbara networked with many scientific societies and was an invited presenter at many national meetings to talk about making connections between science teachers and scientists. By acknowledging cultural similarities and differences, she assisted others in making significant connections with educational professionals who work with K-12 students. In this capacity she was instrumental in establishing a schoolyard Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) collaboration with the nationally funded LTER program.

Occasional Teacher Advisory Work Group
Terms of Reference for the Occasional Teacher Advisory Work Group have been established and were approved by the Provincial Executive. This document outlines the organization and responsibilities of the workgroup. The group investigated the possibility of an insurance package being available from a carrier that would allow Occasional Teachers to purchase a benefit package. The package was examined but found the cost to individual members to be prohibitive. OTAWG recommends that bargaining units continue to negotiate improvements to benefits through the collective bargaining process. Copies of existing clausal language covering benefits for Occasional Teachers can be accessed through the Provincial Collective Bargaining Department. The Group is investigating a process whereby Occasional Teachers may submit an application for membership on OTAWG. The Work Group will be issuing a newsletter to Occasional Teacher Bargaining Unit Presidents in the near future.

The Occasional Teacher Advisory Work Group discussed several issues during their meeting on June 6 and 7. Earl Manners, OSSTF president, met with the work group to discuss the importance of occasional teachers within OSSTF. The work group discussed strategies for improved representation of occasional teachers. Manners expressed appreciation for the strong support of occasional teachers in the May all-member vote. Bill Reith, executive assistant at Provincial Office, addressed the work group on issues surrounding a benefit package for individual occasional teachers. The work group completed a draft of the Terms of Reference for the Occasional Teacher Advisory Group (OTAG) which will be presented to the Provincial Executive. All occasional teacher chief negotiators will be invited to regional meetings, provided they are actively involved in occasional teacher negotiations.

Information about the teacher s advisory Council and its meeting on August 13, 2004.

NSRC Hosts Teacher's Advisory Council
Released Date: August 13, 2004
Location: Washington, D.C.
On August 13, 2004, the National Science Resources Center hosted an afternoon event at the Smithsonian Castle for the teachers selected to the prestigious Teacher’s Advisory Council. A presentation was given on professional development by  David Marsland , Co-director of the NSRC Professional Development Center.  Sally Goetz Shuler , executive director, (shown here at right) closed the session with her remarks and left time for questions. The Teacher's Advisory Council was established in November 2002, by one of the NSRC’s parent organizations, The National Academies. Its purpose is to advise the National Academies on matters related to education, especially teaching and learning in U.S. schools. The mission of the Council is to increase the usefulness, relevance, and communication of research to educational practice; help the research community develop new research that is informed by practice; provide advice about how other National Academies programs, initiatives, and recommendations can be most effectively implemented in schools; and offer guidance about how the National Academies can best communicate with the teaching community in the United States. The Council currently consists of a core group of 11 teachers representing the sciences, mathematics, and technology. These outstanding teachers represent elementary, middle, and secondary grade levels, urban and rural settings, and schools considered “good” as well as those currently deemed as “failing.” Qualifications for both core group and at-large members include a minimum of 50 percent of working time spent in the classroom with students and demonstrated professional leadership. At least one core group member representing each grade band is board certified by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. Several Council members are Presidential Awardees for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
