    REASONING FOR TEACHER ADVISORY PROGRAM
Self-worth, a sense of belonging, and the building of leadership are very basic needs of middle school students. To enhance the feeling of self-worth of each student is a primary goal. This can be implemented best when a relationship is built up between the teacher/advisor and the individual students. The teacher/advisory program provides a setting to help meet these needs. WHAT IF... Every student in our school knew that some one faculty member really cared about her/him and knew what they hoped to gain from school... All students had educational, career or personal goals toward which they were working and could see their courses as useful in reaching these goals. All Parents personally knew someone at school whom they could call and who really knew their child and how they were doing. All parents received telephone calls from the school telling them good things about their child. These "what ifs", is actualized, would make school a more rewarding experience for everyone.

    Strategies:
    Teacher Advisory Systems
Teacher advisory systems are similar to adult advocate systems; they organize adults to personalize the high school experience and support academic achievement, working with small groups of students. Some schools and districts establish advisory classes that meet weekly; others schedule students for less formal one-on-one or group time with teachers. Advisory activities may include helping students develop personal learning plans, introducing students to career clusters, helping students select courses, and working with students on postsecondary plans and pre-employment skills. Make a Difference in Your Child's Education
Ever wonder how you as one parent in a world of ever changing issues can have a direct and immediate impact on your child's education?

Simple…get involved in the Parent Teacher Advisory Council ("PTAC"). As PTAC members, we are also members of the Windsor community, parents of school-aged children, business owners, full time employees, and housewives. We are extremely busy parents who believe that being actively involved in our children's education is a priority, not a luxury. The PTAC parents constantly hear local parents complain about issues related to the Windsor schools. Windsor is a great town to live in because the school officials care about your input. So instead of complaining to other parents which ultimately yields no results, why don't you make a commitment to take an active role in bettering your child's education TODAY by getting involved in the Parent Teacher Advisory Council ("PTAC") on a regular basis. In getting involved through the PTAC, you can have a direct impact on decisions related to these very issues.
    About PTAC
All Tozer parents are automatically members of the PTAC and are always welcome to attend meetings. This group meets approximately five times a year. The purpose of the PTAC is:

"National attrition rates indicate that 17 percent of educators leave teaching after one year, 30 percent after two years, 40 percent after three years, nearly half after five years and up to 80 percent after ten years." (Heyns 1988, Huling-Austin 1986, Morey and Murphy 1990)
"Replacing a worker costs 25% of that person's salary, the higher cost of losing qualified teachers is paid by the students - lack experienced teachers - expertise and insight." (Norton 1999)
    INTRODUCTION
The different roles I represent in the educational community have shaped a curiosity about the struggles of beginning teachers in the classroom. As a middle school, language arts teacher for fifteen years, I have witnessed the difficult situations that await beginning teachers. For example, I have watched beginning teachers, those in their first year of the profession, traveling from room to room when there was a shortage of classrooms. They are assigned the multiple schedules that require excessive preparation time; extra duties are often shifted to them, and their classrooms become the dumping grounds for the difficult students. How can the traditional induction system be revised to increase support for beginning teachers?
As a mother of one middle school and one high school child, I have often heard and unfortunately said, "Well, he is a first year teacher. He will

Approval of Minutes The minutes of the September 23, 2003, meeting were approved. Course Work Completion/Number of Hours Mary Ann Finnerty addressed the committee with a concern regarding students leaving Sarah Anthony without course credits for the time they were in school. She suggested that teachers record "pass or fail" and the number of hours completed on the transcript when the students leave the facility. Maruta will consult with the Principal, Saundra Uribe-Silverman, and report back to the committee in January. Web Site for the JCCS Teacher Advisory Committee Ron suggested that a web site for the Teachers Advisory Committee be created and that the minutes and important agenda items be posted on the web. A vote was taken, and it was agreed that this suggestion should be explored.

Advisory meetings called Space Science Symposia occur one to two times a year and attract a broad group of teachers who are representative of the Chicago Public School system. Sessions are a mixture of space science presentations by local scientists and discussions in areas such as curriculum and professional development, NASA resources, and communication. Other special events occur as needs and opportunities arise. Planning for symposia and other events is done in monthly meetings by a small group of teachers who are known as Teacher Consultants.
