STAR STAR is an acronym for Swanson's Teacher Advisor and Reading Time. The Teacher Advisory is based on the middle school philosophy that students in the middle years have at least one significant adult with whom they can relate on a daily basis. Students are heterogeneously grouped from the full population at each grade level into more intimate teaching groups. There are twelve to seventeen students in each STAR group. Students meet with this small group of peers and a teacher advisor on a daily basis throughout the school year from 7:50-8:10. A variety of activities are scheduled for STAR. The scope of activities is broad; some are the same across grade levels and others will vary. The advisor selects the activities that are most applicable to the STAR students. Some highlights of the STAR program: SQUIRT days are on Mondays and Thursdays. The entire school reads quietly from material of each individual's choice. Character Education takes place during STAR from the second week of October to May. Each month focuses on a different pillar of character education.
