Teacher Advisory Committee
The Teacher Advisory Committee is an exciting opportunity that is open to 15 educators yearly in the Channel 38 and Channel 20 viewing areas. The committee helps choose the new ITV programming that will be broadcast on Wisconsin Public Television during the following school year for use in Wisconsin classrooms. The Teacher Advisory Committee meets once every year. Members of the Teacher Advisory Committee take part in a statewide ITV selection process and have the opportunity to interact with state and local educators. The committee is divided into three, five-member subcommitteesone each for grade level: K-4, 5-8 and 9-12. Teacher Advisory Committee members:
  • Tape the new ITV series that are aired during ITV Peview. Solicit comments from colleagues and students about their reactions to the ITV Preview series. Acquaint themselves with ITV series currently offered within their grade. Become familiar with the use of instructional television in their school.
During the one-day meeting, the committee members share feedback they received from teachers in their schools; review data gathered from the ITV Preview ballots; and recommend which series to add to, and which ones to drop from the following year's ITV broadcast schedule on Wisconsin Public TV.

Educators Attend Workshop at BBSR to Create Internet Curriculum Seven teachers from a variety of schools in the United States, Bermuda and England gathered at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research, June 17-23 1999, for a teacher advisory group workshop created to develop online curriculum for a recently-launched website. The website http://www.coexploration.org/bbsr/coral/, a joint project of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research (BBSR) and The College of Exploration and funded by the Goldman Fund, currently contains educational information on coral reefs and video clips taken in Bermuda. The site will soon feature a "Coral Cam" which will continuously capture underwater video at Bermuda's North Rock, a stunning coral reef environment, and broadcast live on the internet. The workshop participants met during their week-long stay at BBSR to review and modify the current site. They also created lesson plans to compliment the website for use in science classrooms around the world. The educators will also form the core advisory group and help design a web-based online workshop about coral reefs that will be offered to teachers within the next year. ."This group represents a diverse mix of talent," explains College of Exploration coordinator Tina Bishop. "They were chosen based on their extensive experience with science curriculum in K-12 classrooms."

After its study, the committee will recommend a process designed to improve or enhance the professional growth of school and central-level leaders. The committee’s first organizational meeting is in late September.

Teacher Advisory Council works to help Wake teachers and students
February 11, 2002 - A new teachers advisory council has begun tackling some of the tough issues that teachers say will help them be more effective in the classroom. Superintendent Bill McNeal created the council after holding a series of forums last year where teachers voiced their concerns to McNeal and his administrative cabinet. Kim Hughes, a Wake County teacher and former State Teacher of the Year, helped organize the forums last year and has worked with McNeal in developing the council this year. "We're creating something new," said Hughes who served on the Governor's Teacher Advisory Committee. "With Gov. Hunt, I saw the state Teachers Advisory Committee really make a difference. Bill McNeal's strong commitment to leaving no child behind, coupled with his openness to teachers' ideas made this idea a reality. It was a good way to give Wake County teachers an ongoing voice in our system." The council has 15 representatives and three ex-officio members. For each of the areas managed by area assistant superintendents Ann Hooker, Jonibel Willis, John Ringo, Luther Cherry, and Danny Barnes, there are three teachers, each representing the area's elementary, middle, or high schools. The ex-officio council seats will be filled by teachers in various WCPSS leadership positions: the current president of the Wake NCAE, the most recent WCPSS Teacher of the Year, and the system's Teacher Leadership Coordinator.
