Embedded Tk
Embedded Tk or ``ET'' is tool for making stand-alone executables out of a mixture of C or C++ and Tcl/Tk. Using ET you can invoke a short Tcl/Tk script in the middle of a C routine, or you can invoke a C routine in the middle of a Tcl/Tk script. ET also bundles external Tcl/Tk scripts (including the standard Tcl/Tk startup scripts) into the executable so that the executable can be run on another binary-compatible computer that doesn't have Tcl/Tk installed. As of version 1.6b3, ET will now generate executables for Windows3.1, Windows95 and WindowsNT when used together with Tk4.1. Additional information can be found in the README file that is part of the 1.6b3 and later distributions. Beginning with version 8.0, the ET version numbers now track the corresponding Tcl/Tk version numbers. The following is available:
  • The latest documentation for ET is available as postscript (241115 bytes), or plain

Michael McLennan, Cadence Design Systems, Inc. Who should attend: Programmers and managers who are using Tcl/Tk to build real-world applications. This tutorial assumes a working knowledge of Tcl/Tk and goes beyond that to show how nontrivial Tcl/Tk programs are put together. Topics include:
  • How to use the Tk canvas widget to synthesize new types of widgets
  • How to use binding tags to add new widget behaviors
  • How to organize Tcl code into reusable libraries and packages.
These techniques come together to create professional-looking applications that are easier to maintain and extend. Michael McLennan has been a Tcl/Tk enthusiast since 1992. He has taught more than 100 Tcl/Tk courses, and is co-author of Effective Tcl/Tk Programming and Tcl/Tk Tools. He also developed [incr Tcl], an object-oriented extension of Tcl/Tk. Michael, who received a Ph.D. in 1990 from Purdue University, is currently an Architect at Cadence Design Systems, Inc. Need help? Use our Contacts page.

Tcl/Tk
Tcl/Tk is a recent addition to the list of languages I learnt and I am forever grateful and regretful for that fact. Grateful because Tcl/Tk is a beautiful language and I am still dreaming about what all could be done with it. Regretful because I did not find it before. I have written an excellent(at least in my highly unbiased opinion) tutorial for Tcl/Tk - if you are new to this language, I would highly recommend it. IMPORTANT:
You need the Tcl/Tk compiler to run this program - it is a Tcl script and not an executable file. So you need the interpreter to run it. A free interpreter can be downloaded from http://www.tcl.tk/ . Indexer will need Iwidget 4.0 to run. Please make sure that it is available. It is available with the Tcl interpreter in the latest versions. Programs Indexer V 1.00.D I have created a program in Tcl/Tk which can prove very useful for Web designers, HTML coders or people interested in Tcl/Tk. Indexer makes an HTML index(list) of all selected files. This is extremely useful for Web Designers, Web Developers or those with a large collection of HTML Files. All you have to do is select all the files to be indexed and chose how the index should be made. Then select the file where the index should be written to and the program will do the rest. It will find the relative links to the specified files and write the index in specified format. RI 2.00.A

3. What is Tcl/Tk
3.1 What is Tcl?
Tcl is the acronym for "Tool Command Language" (it is pronounced "tickle"). Tcl is actually divided into two things: a language and a library. Tcl is a simple textual programming language, intended for issuing commands to interactive programs such as text editors, debuggers and shells. It has a simple syntax and it is also programmable. Tcl users can write command procedures to provide more powerful commands than those given in the built-in set. Second, Tcl is a library package embeddable in applications. The Tcl library consists of a parser for the Tcl language, routines to implement the Tcl built -in commands, and procedures which allow each application to extend Tcl with addit ional commands specific to that application. The application program generates Tcl commands and passes them to the Tcl parser for execution. Commands may be generated by reading characters from an input source, or by associating command strings with elements of the application's user interfa ce, such as menu entries, buttons, and other widgets. When the Tcl library receive s commands it parses them into component fields and executes built-in commands directly. For commands implemented by the application, Tcl calls back to the application to execute the commands. In many cases commands will make recursive invocation s of the Tcl interpreter by passing in additional strings to execute (in fact procedures and conditional-looping commands all work in this way). An applicat ion program can obtain many advantages by using Tcl for its command language:

from the Sun "Tcl/Tk homepage": What is Tcl? Tcl (Tool Command Language) is two things: a scripting language and an interpreter for that language that is designed to be easy to embed into other applications. As a language, it is much like UNIX shell languages. There is very little syntax and it is easy to learn. It is used to glue together building blocks built in system programming languages like C, C++, and Java. These building blocks appear as commands, or verbs, in the script language. It is easy to embed Tcl into a legacy program so you can script the behavior of that program and add in other building blocks like a GUI interface. The Tcl interpreter is written in C and has been ported to almost every computer platform. What is Tk?
