The Linux Tcl and Tk HOWTO
Luca Rossetti lukaros@tin.it
v0.2, 07 November 1998 This document describes the Linux approach to Tcl, a scripting langua ge. It is an easy to learn interpreted language that uses a typeless approach to achieve a higher level of programming and a rapid application development. The Tk toolkit is a programming environment for creating graphical user interf aces (GUI) under X Window System. Their capabilities include the possibility to extend and embed in other application, rapid development and ease of use. Toge ther, Tcl and Tk provide many benefits both to application developer and user. Tk-ba sed interfaces tend to be much more customizable and dynamic than those built with one of the C or C++ based toolkits. Tk implements the Motif look and feel. A great number of interesting X applications are implemented entirely in Tk, with no new application-specific commands at all.

Tk is a standard add-on to Tcl that provides commands to quickly and easily create user interfaces. Even though Tcl was originally created on UNIX, your Tcl scripts should run the same on all supported platforms, except for a few differences. This document describes those differences on Windows. This list of frequently-asked questions, also called a FAQ, covers problems with the Tcl/Tk programming on the Windows platform. Object-Oriented Language: Tcl/Tk
  • Intro
    • Tcl stands for Tool Command Language Tcl is really two things: a scripting language, and an interpreter for that language that is designed to be easy to embed into your application. Tcl and its associated graphical user interface toolkit, Tk , were designed and crafted by Professor John Ousterhout of the University of California, Berkeley. You can find these packages on the Internet and use them freely in your application, even if it is commercial. The Tcl interpreter has been ported from UNIX to DOS, Windows, OS/2, NT, and Macintosh environments. The Tk toolkit has been ported from the X window system to Windows and Macintosh. There are many Tcl extensions freely available on the Internet. Most extensions include a C library that provides some new functionality, and a Tcl interface to the library. Examples include database access, telephone control, MIDI controller access, and expect, which adds Tcl commands to control interactive programs. The most notable extension is Tk , a toolkit for graphical user interfaces.

Object-Oriented Programming with [incr Tcl]
Michael McLennan, Bell Labs Innovations for Lucent Technologies Who should attend: Programmers and managers who are using Tcl/Tk to build large, real-world applications. This tutorial assumes a working knowledge of Tcl/Tk. Some background in object-oriented programming is helpful, though not required. Tcl/Tk programming is deceptively simple. You can put together a "Hello, World!" program with just a few lines of code. But when you start to develop serious applications that require a few thousand lines of code, things can get out of hand. [incr Tcl] provides a set of object-oriented extensions for the Tcl language. It helps organize code into high-level building blocks that are easy to develop and maintain. [incr Tcl] has been around since 1993, so it has become the de facto standard for object-oriented Tcl programming. It is currently used by thousands of developers and distributed in dozens of commercial applications world-wide. This tutorial describes object-oriented programming in the context of [incr Tcl]. It presents fundamental concepts, including the class definition syntax, inheritance (is-a relation-ships), composition (has-a relationships), multiple inheritance, and public/protected/private member protection. Attendees will gain an understanding of how [incr Tcl] works, and how it can be used to improve their Tcl/Tk programs.
Michael McLennan ( has been a Tcl/Tk enthusiast since 1992, and is currently a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs Innovations for Lucent Technologies. He has taught more than 60 Tcl/Tk courses, and is co-author of

What is Tcl/Tk?
Tcl/Tk is the multiplatform scripting language created by John Ousterhout , professor of Computer Science at Berkeley from 1980 to 1994, and currently CEO of Scriptics Corporation. An interpreted language, tcl/tk does not provide the same speed as optimized C/C++ code for many tasks, but it excels at other tasks requiring complicated coding in C or C++. For example, the simple "hello world" program (clicking on the "Done" button closes the window) was created by the following code: wm title . "Hello"
button .b -text "Done" -command exit
pack .m .b Stored in a file, this code occupies only 136 bytes of disk space. A Windows dialog-based application with the same functionality created using the Visual C++ AppWizard (default options) will take several orders of magnitude more space. Scriptics has an excellent web site containing a discussion of the relative merits of scripting languages Return to the table of contents.

Tcl/Tk Cookbook - Introduction
Tcl, Tool Command Language, is an interpreted language with programming features, available across platforms running Unix, Windows and the Apple Macintosh operating system. Tk, the associated toolkit is an easy and efficient way of developing window based applications. Application tasks are split into modules and any new application specific task is written and compiled as C or C++ program and exported as a new Tcl command. Then a Tcl script, a series of existing and new Tcl commands, is composed to make the overall application. The scripting language, much like any shell language, has the ability to access and execute any other programs. Therefore several Tcl based applications could be made to work together to create or extend into a new application. Tcl consists of few syntax rules and a (still growing) set of core commands. Tk provides a higher level application programming interface for developing interactive widgets based applications, particularly for those who wish to concentrate on the functionality of their application and have no need to gain indepth programming expertise in the underlying window system and/or verbose toolkits such as OSF/Motif. Tcl/Tk is free, available now on Apple Macintosh and Windows and has a wide user base with a rich and growing mass of useful contributed software. The wider availabilty, usage and ease of teaching and learning of Tcl/Tk makes it the most appropriate tool for teaching the principles of Graphical User Interface design and development.

Purpose
This section is a brief description of how to setup your environment to access Tcl/Tk and other extensions. It also introduces tclsh , the Tcl shell application and wish , the Tk shell window-based application. If you are new to Tcl/Tk programming, follow this with Chapters 1 and 2.

If you are an end user, then you will require to know if Tcl/Tk or any other extension that you want to use is installed for your system. If they are then you will need to know the absolute pathnames of the bin, include and lib directories for these. If not, contact your system adminstrator and refer them to the "Housekeeping".
Setting up Environment Variables
The binaries and libraries of Tcl/Tk and its extensions such as blt etc are generally installed under /usr/bin and /usr/lib. If this is not the case (i.e. they are compiled but not installed under /usr) , you need to set up a few environment variables in your .cshrc (for Unix C shell users - Bourne shell users should edit their .profiles and ensure that they export the set environment variables): e.g., If the master directory is ~/tcl then

August 8, 2005 Article on debugging TinyCobol programs I have written a short tutorial on how to debug cobol programs, compiled with TinyCobol, by means of the nice DDD, Data Display Debugger, a gdb frontend. Grab it (in portuguese only now) from our cobol compiler development page April 29, 2005 viscomp for TinyCobol Maybe you remember my viscomp, a nice frontend to gdb which allows it to debug the TinyCobol compiler parser and code generator. After many hands (and brains) modified the compiler, it became broken. Well, I ressurected it now (simply because I need it!) and it is more beautiful and usable yet. To avoid someone else breaking again the compiler ability to be debugged, I will retain strict control on the cvs updates, in my cvs server of course. (Click on the image to see a full-sized screenshot) If you want to try it, you will require tcl/tk 8.4 or higher installed. The script is at the "utils" directory in TinyCobol tree.

Homework 1 - Tcl/Tk Programming CPSC 661: Integrated Systems Design Automation Out: Friday, October 3, 2003 Due: Friday, October 17, 2003 Assignment In this assignment you will write a Tcl program and a Tcl/Tk graphical program. Problems The first problem is to write a Tcl script to read a set of integers from a file name specified on the command line, compute the minimum, maximum, and median numbers, and print them on stdout as "Minimum: XX Maximum: XX Median: XX". The median is the number that half the numbers are below, and half are above. In the case of an even number of input values, the median is the average of the two numbers that half the remaining numbers are above and half below. For example, the median of "1 8 5 2 7" is 5, while the median of "1 8 5 2 7 6" is 5.5. Your program should not have a built-in limit on the file size, and should be able to handle at least 100 integers, both positive and negative. You should create your own input files. The files only need to have 10-20 pseudo-random numbers in them to test interesting cases. You can use tclsh or wish as the shell.
