September Update
Posted by: casey on 08/28/2005 04:19 PM [General]
We have had a fairly busy month. I have been able to fix several bugs. And phobie fixed a fairly irritating one involving the scrollbar. So now, when you scroll up to read some text, and a conversation is going on, or starts, the scrollbar won't constantly keep moving.
I have fixed most of the binding issues. However if some have slipped through the cracks, please let us know. Several 'focus' issues have been resolved with the Script Center. By the time you read this, I will be on vacation for two weeks. In the mean time phobie will be around. [Monthly Build] We have one this month! Enjoy :) Remember, to use the Monthly Build, you must have a version of Tcl/Tk Installed (not an issue on *nix since you must have it installed to run the regular releases). Just extract the files with Winzip or gzip. If you are on windows, just double click the savirc.tcl file.

Tcl/Tk is the user-friendly way for anyone to produce GUI "windows" applications. A Tcl script does not need to be compiled to be used yet provides much more power than a "bat" file or shell script. Tcl is an open source language designed not as a replacement for Java or C++ but as a scripting language to "glue" software components written in those languages together in a flexible reusable framework. Its' simple rules allow anyone to create a functional GUI which will work in any variant of Microsoft Windows, Linux or even within a web browser. The Tool Command Language, Tcl , and its associated graphical toolkit, Tk are used to implement the examples in this guide. No formal training in Software Engineering or Computer Science is required nor is an advanced computer background assumed. To complete this exercise you will only need access to an MS Windows 95, 98, ME, NT or Linux computer system. After completion of the exercises, the reader will be able to produce medium complexity cross-platform windowed applications and will have an appreciation of the power and flexibility of Tcl/Tk. Links to other free resources regarding Tcl/Tk are provided at the end of this document. Typical time to complete this exercise: 2 hours.

The Tcl scripting language and the Tk toolkit create a powerful programming environment for building graphical user interfaces. With two lines of code you can create a simple button; with two hundred lines of code, a desktop calculator; and with a thousand lines of code, an industrial-strength groupware calendar and appointment minder. Your applications run on all of the major platforms: UNIX, Windows 95/NT, and Macintosh. You can even embed your programs in a Web page to make them available online. Mark Harrison and Michael McLennan, two noted Tcl/Tk experts, combine their extensive experience in this practical programming guide. It is ideal for developers who are acquainted with the basics of Tcl/Tk and are now moving on to build real applications.

(This article appears in IEEE Computer magazine, March 1998) Abstract
Scripting languages such as Perl and Tcl represent a very different style of programming than system programming languages such as C or JavaTM. Scripting languages are designed for "gluing" applications; they use typeless approaches to achieve a higher level of programming and more rapid application development than system programming languages. Increases in computer speed and changes in the application mix are making scripting languages more and more important for applications of the future. Keywords: component frameworks, object-oriented programming, scripting, strong typing, system programming.
1 Introduction
For the last fifteen years a fundamental change has been occurring in the way people write computer programs. The change is a transition from system programming languages such as C or C++ to scripting languages such as Perl or Tcl. Although many people are participating in the change, few people realize that it is occurring and even fewer people know why it is happening. This article is an opinion piece that explains why scripting languages will handle many of the programming tasks of the next century better than system programming languages. Scripting languages are designed for different tasks than system programming languages, and this leads to fundamental differences in the languages. System programming languages were designed for building data structures and algorithms from scratch, starting from the most primitive computer elements such as words of memory. In contrast, scripting languages are designed for gluing: they assume the existence of a set of powerful components and are intended primarily for connecting components together. System programming languages are strongly typed to help manage complexity, while scripting languages are typeless to simplify connections between components and provide rapid application development.

Review of Effective Tcl/Tk Programming
Effective Tcl/Tk Programming Writing Better Programs with Tcl and Tk Mark Harrison, Michael McLennan ISBN: 0-201-63474-0 If you know a bit of Tcl and Tk, this is the book that will see the most use when you are writing Tcl code. The only topics not covered by this book are creating extensions in C or C++, and using the popular packages and extensions (e.g., [incr Tcl], expect, scotty, Tix). First, this is one of the few books out on Tcl that include Tcl 8.0. This current Tcl release has several critical features for product development. The most complicated script improvement is the grid geometry manager, and this means that it is one of the few that can walk you through its mysteries. If you are still using the pack geometry manager, this book has the most cogent explanation of the packing spaces of any yet published. Second, if you haven't yet adopted packages as your central paradigm for adding functionality, the book contains a reasonable example of providing a package comprising only script files. If you haven't been convinced to put this on your bookshelp yet, consider that the book contains several small yet interesting procedures and applications, sprinkles good programming practices throughout, and provides adequate screen shots and diagrams.

Review by Sean McGrath
When enough time has passed for someone to write a history of programming in the 20th century, one curious fact will stand out the most influential programming languages tend to go through a gestation period in which word of mouth and Internet FAQs are more important means of spreading the news than published books. The solitary book, or at most, pair of books, devoted to teaching such languages often becomes a veritable "bible" to its community: shared, dog-eared, and tattered, read, reread, and revered by the faithful. Over time, with the slow, sure confidence of continental drift, more books covering such languages appear until a mainstream computing technology is born. The C Programming Language , by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie, Prentice Hall, 1988) and The Camel Book ( Programming Perl , Second Edition, by Tom Christiansen, Randal L. Schwartz, and Larry Wall, O'Reilly, 1996). To this shelf of fame I would like to posit the addition of two new volumes the "Atomic Snake" and "Sunset Paintbrush" books. Okay, so these pet names are mine and are unlikely to reach the status of industry vernacular. The former is my pet name for

http://incrtcl.sourceforge.net/itcl/
Applications built with Tcl/Tk come together with relative ease. A sticky note facility can be put together in an hour. A simple video game can be created in an afternoon. But as applications get larger, Tcl/Tk code becomes more and more difficult to understand, maintain and extend. [incr Tcl] provides the extra language support needed to build large Tcl/Tk applications. It introduces the notion of objects, which act as building blocks for an application. Each object is a bag of data with a set of procedures or "methods" that are used to manipulate it. Objects are organized into "classes" with identical characteristics, and classes can inherit functionality from one another. This object-oriented paradigm adds another level of organization on top of the basic variable/procedure elements, and the resulting code is easier to understand and maintain. The latest release offers better performance and a host of new features:
  • the [incr Widgets] mega-widget set
  • the [incr Tk] framework for building mega-widgets
  • namespaces for organizing commands and variables
  • support for integrating C/C++ code into [incr Tcl] classes
Since it was introduced in 1993
