Twelfth President 1849-1850
[Margaret Mackall Smith Taylor]

November 2001
Interesting Fact: Zachary Taylor spent July 4, 1850, eating cherries and milk at a ceremony at the Washington Monument. He got sick from the heat and died five days later, the second president to die in office. Fast Fact: With Zachary Taylor, a career soldier first attained the Presidency. Biography: Northerners and Southerners disputed sharply whether the territories wrested from Mexico should be opened to slavery, and some Southerners even threatened secession. Standing firm, Zachary Taylor was prepared to hold the Union together by armed force rather than by compromise. Born in Virginia in 1784, he was taken as an infant to Kentucky and raised on a plantation. He was a career officer in the Army, but his talk was most often of cotton raising. His home was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and he owned a plantation in Mississippi. But Taylor did not defend slavery or southern sectionalism; 40 years in the Army made him a strong nationalist.

Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even just one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.

TAYLOR, ZACHARY (1784-1850). Zachary Taylor, United States Army general and president of the United States, was born in Orange County, Virginia, on November 24, 1784, to Richard and Sarah Dabney (Strother) Taylor; he grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. He joined the army as a lieutenant in 1808 and four years later attracted attention by his defense of Fort Harrison, Indiana, against an Indian attack. Taylor left the army for a few months after the war but returned to fill a series of frontier assignments that lasted for the next thirty years. He saw action in the Black Hawk War in 1832 and in Florida in 1837-40 during the Seminole War. During his last two years in Florida he commanded the forces pursuing the elusive Indians. His unpretentious manner and appearance led troops there to nickname him "Old Rough and Ready." In 1845 Taylor became commander of the force ordered to Texas after annexation. qv He established his base camp at Corpus Christi; by the spring of 1846 it housed nearly half of the United States Army. In March, on orders from Washington, Taylor moved his force to the north bank of the Rio Grande and established Fort Brown opposite the Mexican town of Matamoros, a move that Mexico considered an invasion of her territory. In May the Mexicans ambushed one of Taylor's dragoon patrols, an attack that President James K. Polk used as the basis for his request for a declaration of war on May 13. Meanwhile, Taylor overwhelmed the northern Mexican army in the battles of Palo Alto (May 8, 1846) and Resaca de la Palma

      Zachary Taylor Born: Birthplace:
Orange County, Va. Zachary Taylor was born at Montebello, Orange County, Va., on Nov. 24, 1784. Embarking on a military career in 1808, Taylor fought in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the Seminole War, meanwhile holding garrison jobs on the frontier or desk jobs in Washington. A brigadier general as a result of his victory over the Seminoles at Lake Okeechobee (1837), Taylor held a succession of Southwestern commands and in 1846 established a base on the Rio Grande, where his forces engaged in hostilities that precipitated the war with Mexico. He captured Monterrey in Sept. 1846 and, disregarding Polk's orders to stay on the defensive, defeated Santa Anna at Buena Vista in Feb. 1847, ending the war in the northern provinces. Though Taylor had never cast a vote for president, his party affiliations were Whiggish and his availability was increased by his difficulties with Polk. He was elected president over the Democrat Lewis Cass. During the revival of the slavery controversy, which was to result in the Compromise of 1850, Taylor began to take an increasingly firm stand against appeasing the South; but he died in Washington on July 9, 1850, during the fight over the Compromise. He married Margaret Mackall Smith in 1810. His bluff and simple soldierly qualities won him the name Old Rough and Ready.

Longevity of U.S. Presidents
Ed Uthman, MD
Diplomate, American Board of Pathology
Last updated 2 Sep 2000 Everyone knows that the average life span of humans has increased markedly in the 20th century, but has it increased for everyone? An informal study of U.S. presidents may yield some surprising answers. My aim is to look at the effect of medical advances over the last two centuries on the longevity of those who are most likely to have access to those advances. I think presidents make an interesting (if small) sample because of their demographic uniformity: all are white male politicians, almost all are military veterans, and presumably all had sufficient wealth and/or prestige to command whatever medical resources were available in their later years. Of the 41 men who have held the office, 5 are still alive (Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton), 4 were victims of homicide, all from gunfire (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy)*, and 32 died of natural causes (4 while in office: Harrison, Taylor, Harding, FD Roosevelt). These 32 are listed below by date of death. The "ordinal" figure is the order in which each served as president, Cleveland having served two non-consecutive terms. NAME ORD-

While the City of Taylor is 35 years old, the community has a rich heritage that dates back to the 1800s. The first registered property owner was Peter Coan, who purchased an 80-acre parcel from the United States government in 1830. Originally, Taylor was part of Ecorse Township, but area residents found that they lived too far away to participate in the civic affairs and functions of the township. Because of this, the residents petitioned to form a separate community. The petition was granted in 1847 and the new community was named Taylor Township, in honor of General Zachary Taylor, an American hero in the Mexican War who would go on to become President of the United States. Largely an agricultural community, Taylor Township grew steadily over the years, particularly after the opening of the Ford Rouge Plant. In May of 1968, Taylor Township residents voted to adopt the charter that incorporated the City of Taylor. The most recent years of Taylor's history have been characterized by development and improvement. No longer agricultural, the community boasts comfortable neighborhoods, great schools, a variety of shopping opportunities and several industrial parks. In fact, Taylor is experiencing a residential and commercial building boom, of sorts. Taylor residents can live, work and shop, all within a convenient 24 square miles.

95. ZACHARY TAYLOR - LoveToKnow Article On ZACHARY TAYLOR
taylor, zachary (17841850), twelfth president of the United States, was born inOrange county, Virginia, on the 24th of September 1784.
http://20.1911encyclopedia.org/T/TA/TAYLOR_ZACHARY.htm
ZACHARY TAYLOR
TAYLOR, ZACHARY In 1836 Taylor was ordered from Wisconsin to take command against the Seminoles in Florida. On the 25th of December 1837, after a difficult campaign, he inflicted a severe defeat upon the Indians at the battle of Okeechobee, and for this was breveted brigadier-general. Then followed four years of harassing service in the Florida Everglades, whence he passed to the command of the First Department of the army, with headquarters at Fort Jesup, Louisiana. Meanwhile Taylor had strengthened his base of supplies at Point Isabel, where he was reinforced by militia from Texas and Louisiana, and during the return march from this post was fiercely attacked at Palo Alto (about 8 m. N.E. of Brownsville, Texas) on May 8th, by the Mexicans under Arista. The latter was easily driven from the field, but on the following day threatened Taylor's advance in a much stronger position, Resaca de la Palma (about 4 m. N. of Brownsville). A brilliant charge by the dragoons under Captain May decided this contest, which Taylor followed up by a pursuit of the Mexican general to the Rio Grande. After relieving Fort Brown, which had been besieged since the 3rd of May, Taylor himself crossed the river, and on the 18th of May occupied Matamoras, from which Arista had already retreated to Monterrey. encountered Taylor with one-fourth that number at Buena Vista, a few miles beyond Saltillo. The all-day battle in the narrow mountain pass was the most stubbornly contested of the whole war, and the brilliant victory of Taylor over such odds made "Old Rough and Ready," as he-was called by his troops, the hero of the hour. With this encounter the serious work of his "army of occupation" ended, although he was later joined by Gen. Alexander W. Doniphan's troops, who had marched from New Mexico via Chihuahua. Taylor's brilliant victory, won when he was so greatly handicapped by Polk, emphasized the popular discontent which that president's policy had already aroused, and suggested him to the political leaders as a presidential possibility. The general, however, had passed his mature years wholly in military service and had never voted, much less strongly allied himself, with any political party.

Chester A. Arthur, 1829-1886
America's 21st president, Chester A. Arthur ascended under a cloud after the death of James A. Garfield, who was assassinated before completing 6 months as president. A former member of an infamous political machine, it was said that no man took the president's office "so widely distrusted, and no man ever retired more generally respected" than Chester A, Arthur. Remembered for establishing the Civil Service Commission, Arthur died November 18th, 1886 at the age of 57.
James Buchanan, 1791-1868
James Buchanan , the 15th president of the United States was distinguished as the only bachelor to serve as Chief Executive and was faulted for permitting the secession of the southern states precipitating the Civil War. Buchanan died June 1st, 1868, the end of his presidential term closing his 47 year career in politics.
