Holt, University of Virginia Biography: A Life in Brief At the time he became President, Zachary Taylor was the most popular man in America, a hero of the Mexican-American War. However, at a time when Americans were confronting the explosive issue of slavery, he was probably not the right man for the job. Taylor was a wealthy slave owner who held properties in the plantation states of Louisiana, Kentucky, and Mississippi. During his brief time in office he died only sixteen months after his election his presidency foundered over the question of whether the national government should permit the spread of slavery to the present-day states of California, New Mexico, and Utah, then newly won from Mexico. His sudden death put Vice President Millard Fillmore into the White House, and Fillmore promptly threw his support behind the Compromise of 1850, canceling out much of the impact of Taylor's presidency.

Remembering President Zachary Taylor
by Dave Mandl
Considering the brevity of his stay in the White House (just under seven weeks), Zachary Taylor's spectacular legend seems grotesquely exaggerated, like the work of some crazed pre-Civil War spin doctor. But if anything, the reputation of our twelfth president has been muted in the century and a half since his death. Surrounded by controversy and swirls of almost unbelievable rumor since before he learned to walk, Taylor was the philanderer that JFK could only dream of being, twice the lush that Benjamin Harrison ever was. On a slow day, he was a bigger crook than Nixon, a worse gambler than James K. Polk, and more of an insufferable whining brat than George Bush. Few people are aware of this today. His election to the highest office in the land was, naturally, a fluke. In an effort to make something of himself and earn the respect of his friends, he half-heartedly declared his candidacy for president in the 1849 election. This was treated as a joke among his acquaintances, who suggested the campaign slogan "A muskrat in every pot." His opponent, Samuel Gates, was an enormously popular Governor who was running unopposed, and whose victory was a virtual shoo-in. Zachary's announced candidacy did nothing to change this; a poll taken two weeks before the election projected that 98.9% of the popular vote would go to Gates. And so it probably would haveif he hadn't been accidentally ground to a pulp in a wheat-threshing machine at a campaign stop on the eve of the election.

Zachary Taylor Zachary Taylor (November 24, 1784 - July , 1850), also known as "Old Rough and Ready", was the 12th (1849 - 1850) President of the United States, and the second President to die in office. Order: 12th President Term of Office: March 5, 1849 - July 9, 1850 Followed: James Knox Polk Succeeded by: Millard Fillmore Date of Birth November 24, 1784 Place of Birth: Barboursville, Virginia Date of Death: July 9, 1850 Place of Death: Washington, D.C. First Ladies : Margaret Mackall Smith (wife)
Mary Elizabeth Bliss (daughter) Occupation: soldier Political Party : Whig Vice President : Millard Fillmore
Biography
Taylor was a career soldier . Starting with a commission as a first lieutenant, in 1808 , he fought in the War of 1812 , the Black Hawk War , and the Second Seminole War . President Polk sent an army under his command to the Rio Grande in 1846 . When the Mexicans attacked Taylor's troops, Taylor defeated the Mexicans, despite being outnumbered 4-to-1, and Polk declared war. In the Mexican-American War that followed, Taylor won additional important victories at Monterrey and Buena Vista and became a national hero. President Polk, disturbed by General Taylor's informal habits of command and perhaps his Whig status as well, kept him in northern Mexico and sent an expedition under General Winfield Scott to capture Mexico City. Taylor, incensed, thought that "the battle of Buena Vista opened the road to the city of Mexico and the halls of Montezuma, that others might revel in them."

          Zachary Taylor Born: Birthplace:
Orange County, Va. Zachary Taylor was born at Montebello, Orange County, Va., on Nov. 24, 1784. Embarking on a military career in 1808, Taylor fought in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, and the Seminole War, meanwhile holding garrison jobs on the frontier or desk jobs in Washington. A brigadier general as a result of his victory over the Seminoles at Lake Okeechobee (1837), Taylor held a succession of Southwestern commands and in 1846 established a base on the Rio Grande, where his forces engaged in hostilities that precipitated the war with Mexico. He captured Monterrey in Sept. 1846 and, disregarding Polk's orders to stay on the defensive, defeated Santa Anna at Buena Vista in Feb. 1847, ending the war in the northern provinces. Though Taylor had never cast a vote for president, his party affiliations were Whiggish and his availability was increased by his difficulties with Polk. He was elected president over the Democrat Lewis Cass. During the revival of the slavery controversy, which was to result in the Compromise of 1850, Taylor began to take an increasingly firm stand against appeasing the South; but he died in Washington on July 9, 1850, during the fight over the Compromise. He married Margaret Mackall Smith in 1810. His bluff and simple soldierly qualities won him the name Old Rough and Ready.

          - James Knox Polk Franklin Pierce -
          Zachary Taylor
Inaugural Address Monday, March 5, 1849 ELECTED by the American people to the highest office known to our laws, I appear here to take the oath prescribed by the Constitution, and, in compliance with a time-honored custom, to address those who are now assembled. In the discharge of these duties my guide will be the Constitution, which I this day swear to "preserve, protect, and defend." For the interpretation of that instrument I shall look to the decisions of the judicial tribunals established by its authority and to the practice of the Government under the earlier Presidents, who had so large a share in its formation. To the example of those illustrious patriots I shall always defer with reverence, and especially to his example who was by so many titles "the Father of his Country." To command the Army and Navy of the United States; with the advice and consent of the Senate, to make treaties and to appoint ambassadors and other officers; to give to Congress information of the state of the Union and recommend such measures as he shall judge to be necessary; and to take care that the laws shall be faithfully executed - these are the most important functions intrusted to the President by the Constitution, and it may be expected that I shall briefly indicate the principles which will control me in their execution.

Print Preview of Section Taylor was sworn in as president on March 5, 1849. A huge crowd swarmed to Washington, D.C., to witness the inauguration. Many of them were office seekers hoping to be appointed to an office under the first Whig administration since 1841. Taylor had at first intended to be a nonpartisan president, but under pressure from his advisers he adopted the spoils system , awarding offices to party loyalists. As a result, much of his time and many of his problems concerned the demands of unemployed Whig politicians. His administration was marked, however, by his personal honesty and courage, especially in the handling of the delicate question of slavery.

TAYLOR, ZACHARY
, twelfth president of the United States. Taylor grew up in Kentucky, where his father was a moderately prosperous planter. Despite his family's social standing, he received little formal schooling; as a result, his writing was ungrammatical, and he found reading difficult all his life. Aided by his family's political connections, he received an army commission in 1808. Prior to the Mexican War, most of his service was spent on the frontier dealing with Indian affairs. His informal attire and indifference to physical hardship led his troops to nickname him Old Rough-and-Ready. During these years, Taylor successfully speculated in land. Eventually he purchased cotton plantations in Louisiana (which he made his home) and Mississippi and became a wealthy slave owner. When relations with Mexico deteriorated following the annexation of Texas, the Polk administration ordered Taylor to move his army of four thousand men to the Rio Grande. War commenced shortly after his arrival in March 1846 when Mexican forces attacked units of Taylor's army. In May, Taylor defeated the Mexican army at Palo Alto and quickly won another victory at Resaca de la Palma. His subsequent capture of Monterrey and his victory at the Battle of Buena Vista (February 22-23, 1847), where he was outnumbered three to one, firmly established his popular reputation as a military hero. He was a brave commander who remained calm in the heat of battle, but not a brilliant military leader: he was excessively cautious, failed to plan campaigns adequately, and displayed limited tactical ability. His successes stemmed more from his opponents' blunders, effective leadership by his subordinates, and his own dogged determination.

Taylor, Zachary
, twelfth president of the United States . Born in Montebello, Virginia, Taylor had little formal education. Because of his family's position, he gained entrance to West Point and became a career military officer. Fondly called "Old Rough and Ready" by his troops, he never lost a battle. Taylor served in the Black Hawk War and received Black Hawk 's surrender in 1832. He participated in the Seminole Wars in Florida in 1837 and in 1846 became a hero of the Mexican War , defeating Mexican forces at the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma, Monterrey, and Buena Vista . After a forty-year military career Taylor won the presidential nomination of the Whig party in 1848 and defeated Democratic candidate Lewis Cass and Free-Soil candidate Martin Van Buren. During his brief sixteen-month administration the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty was ratified. Although a slave owner, Taylor opposed secession and did not oppose admitting California and New Mexico into the Union as free states during his administration. Taylor died of cholera while in office.

Y ou may remember that in the popular movie Chariots of Fire Olympic contender Eric Liddell refused to run on Sunday because of his religious convictions. Something like that happened with a United States president, too. Zachary Taylor, an Episcopalian, refused to take the presidential oath of office on a Sunday. This led to a curious situation in which the United States was "without" a president for a day.
