ZACHARY TAYLOR U.S. President A hero of the war with Mexico in 1846, Zachary Taylor was the first U.S. President who was "regular army". Nicknamed "Old Rough and Ready" while in the army, Taylor was not so tough as president. He was nominated by the Whigs and elected because of his military reputation and southern roots, not because of his politics, whatever they may have been. He died after a five-day illness, having served just sixteen months in office. He was replaced by Millard Fillmore
Extra credit : Because he spent much of his adult life soldiering, Taylor did not vote until he was 62 years old.

Did U.S. President Zachary Taylor die of eating cherries with milk on a warm day?
02-Sep-1994 Dear Cecil: While reading your first book I came across a reference to President Zachary Taylor dying of eating strawberries on a warm day. The only other reference I have heard to something like this was in the Book of Lists , which mentions someone having eaten cherries with milk on a warm day and dying. Everything else I have ever read to find out why this is has been mysteriously mute, though my mother, when I mentioned it (out of fear, because I love cherries), warned me against the practice. I cornered her on it, but all she could say was she had a vague memory of her mother warning her, and she had classed the information with such dubious practices as putting butter on a burn. Cecil, I appeal to you. You say a president died of thiswhat's the story? Dan Shick, San Francisco Dear Dan: Zachary Taylor was diagnosed with "cholera morbus," a catchall term that included diarrhea and dysentery but not true cholera. Exactly what he had and how he got it is not known. It had been steamy in Washington and Taylor against popular advice had eaten raw foods like milk, green apples, and cherries (although maybe not strawberries, my assertion notwithstanding). Sanitation at the time stunk and food contamination was common. Dysentery, for example, was commonly spread by eating food tainted with infected human feces. Taylor's demise may have been hastened by the moronic medical treatments of the day, e.g., bleeding and dosing with mercury compounds. Hygienic standards allegedly having improved, today you can eat your cherries without fear. But I'd wash them just the same.

He was a career army officer who was elected on the strength of the victories he won in the Mexican War (1846-1848). As a soldier he was a courageous and inspired leader who could always be found where the fighting was thickest. He never lost a battle. His men admired him and called him Old Rough and Ready. He was disdainful of military pomp and formal dress and was known for his plainness of manner and appearance. Taylor was president for little more than a year. Although he lacked political experience, he resolutely faced up to the principal issue of the day, the expansion of slavery into the western territories. Although he was a Southern slaveholder, he was first and foremost a supporter of the Union, upholding the national interest over sectional interests. Like President

“Zachary Taylor was raised near the Kentucky frontier on the family farm. There were no schools, so he studied with tutors. He joined the army in his teens and had a military career for forty years. He fought in many battles and became a hero. The Whig Party recognized his popularity and drafted him as their nominee. He was the first military leader to become president without hold a political office previously. He realized he lacked experience so he sought advice from others, but his decisions were always based on his perception of each situation. Slaver and the extension of slavery in the newly acquired western land were the main issues of his term. They were never resolved however, because he died suddenly after only sixteen months in office.” On Line Lesson Plans: Zachary Taylor Polk from TeacherVision

Zachary Taylor
US President - 1849-50 Courtesy of the Library of Congress Northerners and Southerners disputed sharply whether the territories wrested from Mexico should be opened to slavery, and some Southerners even threatened secession. Standing firm, Zachary Taylor was prepared to hold the Union together by armed force rather than by compromise. Born in Virginia in 1784, he was taken as an infant to Kentucky and raised on a plantation. He was a career officer in the Army, but his talk was most often of cotton raising. His home was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and he owned a plantation in Mississippi. But Taylor did not defend slavery or southern sectionalism; 40 years in the Army made him a strong nationalist.

Washington, D. C. Early Years:
Taylor had little or no formal education, except for a small school in Louisville, Kentucky. He worked on his father's plantation until he was 23. He won notoriety as an Indian fighter and became a national hero in the war against Mexico in 1846. His Presidency: The nation was in crisis over slavery, and Taylor opposed a compromise in the face of Southern threats of secession (to leave the Union). The chief accomplishment of his administration was the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty with Great Britain, guaranteeing that neither Britain nor the U. S. would have exclusive control over any future canal through Central America. His Life: Northerners and Southerners disputed sharply whether the territories wrested from Mexico should be opened to slavery, and some Southerners even threatened secession. Standing firm, Zachary Taylor was prepared to hold the Union together by armed force rather than by compromise.

Zachary Taylor
Twelfth President
Taylor was born in Montebllo,Virginia on November 24, 1784. He was one of six Presidents born in a log cabin. He was one of seven Presidents from Virginia. At one time Taylor owned slaves. He was known as "Old Rough and Ready." Plain, unassuming, and downright messy, he almost never wore a proper uniform. "He wears an old oil cap," said one man, "a dusty green coat, a frightful pair of trousers and on horseback he looks like a toad." He was a member of the Whig Party. He was one of 15 Presidents who did not win the Popular Vote. Taylor refused all postage due correspondence. Because of this, he didn't receive notification of his nomination for president until several days later. Zachary Taylor's horse grazed on the White House lawn. Visitors to the White House would take souvenir horsehairs from Whitey, Taylor's old Army horse, that he kept on the White House lawn. Taylor chewed tobacco. He was known as a sure shot when he spit tobacco. He never missed the sawdust box in the White House.

A popular hero, Taylor was nominated for President on the Whig ticket, was elected, and assumed office in 1849. His nonpartisan tendencies were changed under the influence of Senator William H. He favored rapid admission of both California and New Mexico to the Union and strict limitation of Texas boundary claims. His free-soil views put him in opposition to the measures that were to become the Compromise of 1850 . After charges of corruption were lodged against members of his cabinet, he promised a reorganization, but was stricken with cholera morbus and died on July 9, 1850. He was succeeded by Millard

This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polk’s term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office. True to his word he retired at the end of his term. He died only three months after
