    Geographic Range
The marine iguana inhabits the Galapagos Islands which form an archipelago off the coast of South America. The volcanic Galapagos has never been attached to another land mass so it is believed that iguanas rafted over water from South America (Cogger and Zweifel 1998). Some researchers believe that the land iguanas and the marine iguana diverged from a common ancestor at least 10 MY on the former islands of the archipelago which are now below sea level (Rassmann et. al. 1997). Biogeographic Regions:
    oceanic islands
    native
    Habitat
The marine iguana is found on the volcanic islands of the Galapagos. Many of the islands have steep rock cliffs, low rock ledges and intertidal flats.

ATO1012 MODULE II: CLINICAL HEAD AND NECK AND FUNCTIONAL NEUROSCIENCE
11 Quarter Hours This is a medical school course in which the graduate students participate fully in classes and labs with the first year medical students. This course integrates neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with gross anatomy of the head and neck to foster appreciation of the integrated function of these structures. Teaching involves a variety of didactic instruction, laboratory cadaver dissections, brain slices, images of histological preparations, and interactive workshops. Grading is based upon written multiple choice testing and practical exams of the laboratory work. Laboratory attendance is mandatory.
    3 Quarter Hours
This course is intended as the introduction to an extended study of the development, form, and function of the normal human body. Covered in a series of overlapping and interdependent lectures and laboratory exercises are Basic Cell Biology, Basic Tissue Types, Core Concepts of Physiology, and Early Embryonic Development. Students are expected to learn how to identify structural components of cells, tissues, and organs, as they appear in the light and electron microscopes and how to deduce, from microscope views (or micrographs) the most likely functional features of the cell/tissue/organ under observation.

ARI research into threatened species and communities is extensive. Some examples of projects are the development of population modelling software to aid in the management of threatened species (downloadable for free), assessment of habitat quality for native mammals and fish and the implementation of recovery plans for the protection of native orchid species.
Key projects in this theme: Recovery Plans for Threatened Vertebrates: National Recovery Plans are currently being developed for several vertebrate species (growling grass frog Litoria raniformis , Alpine tree frog Litoria verreauxii , stuttering frog Mixophyes balbus , southern brown bandicoot Isoodon obesulus obesulus and spotted-tailed quoll Dasyurus maculatus ) considered nationally threatened ( Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999). When completed, the Recovery Plans will include background information on the taxonomy, biology and ecology of the species.

NeMys is a database system developed to store as many as possible types of biological information on mainly marine taxa in a fully digital way. The concept of storing data on morphology, biogeography, taxonomy, literature, pictures, collections and molecular analyses in one dataset, creates a large group of possible end users and makes it possible to analyse and compare data on a taxonomic group from different points of view.
The database was developed at the Marine Biology Section (Ghent University) mainly with focus on marine Nematoda and Mysida. Data input is done at the Marine Biology Section (Ghent University) (Mysida by Tim Deprez, Nematoda by several meiobenthic researchers). For both Mysida and Nematoda, information on species worldwide is entered. Especially for nematoda, priorities for data logging follow from the activities of the section. For Mysida, data is entered systematically for all species, in the framework of the PhD research of Tim Deprez.
A mirror of the dataset can be accessed through the VLIZ (Flanders Marine Institute) website

viii + 372 Chapter abstracts How to Order During the past decade we have witnessed a mushrooming of papers in the area of medical mycology; detailing major advances in areas such as genomics, molecular and cellular biology, molecular epidemiology, immune response and vaccine development, and strategies to combat infections in humans. This sheer volume of information makes it extremely difficult for the busy research scientist and/or teacher of medical mycology to keep abreast of all the latest advances. This book, together with its companion volume " Pathogenic Fungi: Host Interactions and Emerging Strategies for Control ", brings together expert international authors who critically review current topics, and through the provision of extensive reference sections positively encourage readers to pursue the subject in greater detail. Essential reading for everyone with an interest in medical mycology including: mycologists, biotechnologists, molecular biologists, and pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

(Science: zoology) The theories and techniques of naming, describing, and classifying organisms , the study of the relationships of taxa ,including positional changes which do not involve changes in the names of taxa. The taxonomic hierarchy is, from top to bottom kingdom phylum (for animals ) or division (for plants and fungi class order family ... species
A classification of organisms into groups based on similarities of structure or origin etc.
(biology) study of the general principles of scientific classification.
Practice of classifying plants and animals according to their presumed natural relationships.
Taxonomy involves the study of organisms, and the similarities that varying species share, and then categorising these organisms in relation to their ancestral lines and their common characteristics.

    TAXONOMY
View the Taxonomy List In any assessment of doctoral programs, a key question is: Which programs should be included? The task of constructing a taxonomy of programs is to provide a framework for the analysis of research-doctorate programs as they exist today, with an eye to the future. A secondary question is: Which fields should be grouped together and what names should be given to these aggregations?
    CRITERIA FOR INCLUSION
We recognize that scholarship and research in interdisciplinary fields have grown significantly since the last study. Some of this work is multidisciplinary; some is crossdisciplinary or interdisciplinary. We could not devise a single standard for all possible combinations. Where possible, we have attempted to include acknowledged interdisciplinary fields such as Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, and American Studies. In other instances, we listed areas as emerging fields. Our goal remains to identify and evaluate inter-, multi-, and cross-disciplinary fields. Once they become established scholarly areas and meet the threshold for inclusion in the study established by this and future committees, they will be added to the list of surveyed fields.
The Committee also reviewed the threshold level for inclusion of an individual program and, given the growth in the average size of programs, generally felt that a modification was warranted. A minimal amount of activity is required to evaluate a program.
