The Runner got its funny name because I started working on it when I had chicken pocks at the ripe age of 35! Being in bed with slight fever was boring, so I looked for something to do, which wouldn't be too demanding. The runner is made from fine knitting cotton yarn - for a tatter this is huge. I started in 1998, and finished in 2001 for a church bazaar (I only showed it off, no one was willing to buy it). My estimate is that I put 130 hours of work in this piece, not counting reverse work or winding shuttles. The pattern is from a German Burda Special Tatting, published 1979. Size of runner: 123x32 cm.

For a generation or more, white on white embroidery, a symbol of purity and elegance, once so desirable, has been neglected by needlewoman and collector alike. The growing importance of antique costume, in the saleroom and among serious students, has aroused interest in the embroidered white accessories that were an indispensable part of the whole ensemble. This book gives a concise summary of the various types of white needlework likely to be encountered. It shows details of the techniques and gives a readable and authoritative account of such diverse types as Dresden work, tamboured muslin, Ayrshire embroidery, Mountmellick and Richelieu work, broderie anglaise, quilting and stringwork. A useful section shows how to identify machine embroidery and Indian whitework. Above all, it will be an inspiration to the modern needlewoman attracted by white on white embroidery.

Tatting, or at least the forerunner of what we know today by that name, was first developed in Europe and in its early stages was called knotting (a series of knots sewn onto a base which created a design). It is only one form of knotting, with macrame, (developed in ancient Egypt), an unnamed Chinese method, and a style called purling, mentioned by Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales, being some other types. It is generally thought that, in sixteenth century Italy, knotting progressed from a string of knots to a ring of knots similar to what we now know as tatting. The art traveled to both Germany and France, and then to England, and the Pilgrims brought it to America. In 1707, a poem, The Royal Knotter

While the resulting lace looks quitedelicate, tatting is actually simple to do. From The Tatter’s Treasure Chest The history of tatting can be traced
http://www.corporaterefugee.com/tatting.html
T atting is a type of knotted lace. A shuttle and thread are used to make the lace. The stitch is formed over the hand. While the resulting lace looks quite delicate, tatting is actually simple to do. The tatted piece is made up of basically ‘two half hitch’ knots which are used not as a clove hitch, but as a Lark’s Head knot (also Cow Hitch) where the second half hitch is formed to vertically mirror the first half hitch. This double stitch is used over and over to form a pattern. Extra thread used between double stitches creates"picots" or loops of thread. From The Tatter’s Treasure Chest: "The history of tatting can be traced back over 200 years. It originally developed as anattempt to reproduce the expensive Venetian laces of the sixteenth century, but it has long since come to be appreciated for its own particular beauty." Additional history of the Art can be found in Tatting Technique and History, by Elgiva Nicholls. Some books I particularly like and use a lot because the instructions are presented in a manner that is easy to read:
