    Krazy About Tatting Shuttle
This tatting shuttle page is created to help shuttle collectors with their questions and to find a few missing links in my research into American tatting shuttles. The book I've been working on for 12 years is finally in print. Thanks to all for your patience and encouragements.
    How it all started..
My first love is tatting, which began with lessons from my Aunt Stella, who was taught by my Grandaunt Star around 1920. (Pictured together on the left.) A couple of years later Aunt Stella gave me my first vintage tatting shuttle. It was nearly 4 inches long and made of celluloid to look like ivory. This was the spark that began my research into tatting shuttles and their origins. For more stories on tatting teachers and their shuttles, please click on the site below.

    27. Tatting With Metallic Thread Part Two
Coats and Clark has a large selection of metallic sewing threads. sewing thread and strand of sewing thread work up to about a size 20 tatting thread.

    Winding the shuttle
I find that a shuttle without a hook is easier to use as the hook seems to snag the metallic thread; this is a personal preference of course. Beggar's Lace now carries a shuttle with a double bobbin which is ideal for tatting with double threads. Sebalace has an inexpensive plastic shuttle that has double posts, that also work well with double threads. Whatever your shuttle choice, the points should not be so tight as to cause wearing of the metallic thread.
To facilitate my work, I usually wind a large shuttle, like a Tatsy with my threads and put it aside for a few days. I then wind my working shuttle off of this. The benefit of this is that I have a large amount of thread ready to use. Since I am using a second shuttle for my ball thread there is less chance of the threads tangling together. If my working shuttle starts to run low I can switch shuttles. This helps in keeping knots to a minimum. The second shuttle also means that the chain thread will also be easier to work with. While the chain thread is not as critical as the shuttle thread, it is still more pleasant to work with the relaxed thread. If you prefer not to work with two shuttles, you might like to try this method of keeping the threads together. Thread the two thread though a bead. Slide the bead down the threads, then wind your shuttle. Leave the bead on the ball thread. As you work the bead will keep the ball threads together.

    28. Tatting With Metallic Thread Part Three
I didn t care for tatting with it. To much stretch. And even added to another thread it The metallic threads also match Sulky s regular sewing threads.

This is a list of metallic threads I have used in the past. It is by no means a complete list of the metallic threads available. I keep finding more and more of them. Unless noted they should be tatted with another thread for best results.
Comes in 10 different colors. This is a bumpy wiry type thread which must be added to another thread to tat.
*Kreninik Metallic - Comes in Blending filament (finest),Cable and Cord. Is either bumpy or smooth flat. The blending filament is to to tat alone.
*DMC Metallic Fil Mi-Fin - A thicker smooth thread, kinks back on itself, use with care.
*DMC Fil a Broder or Embroidery thread - A thicker bumpy thread. Can be tatted alone with great care.
*Dritz Metallic Thread - A smooth fine thread. The gold is rather brassy.
*Ultra Metallic - A fine smooth thread, I have only found it at Walmarts. I believe it only comes in gold and silver. Both are pleasant colors.
*Maderia Metallic - I have only used the type that is bumpy, works up about the same as the Kreninik cable. But Maderia comes in other sizes and a large choice of colors.

THE NETTING NEEDLE The Tatting Book (1850) she states: "To obviate the difficulties above mentioned I have substituted a netting needle [emphasis mine] for the shuttle which has enabled me to attach and shape the pattern while working: and where the loops are too small to admit of the netting needle passing through, I have given directions for using a sewing needle [emphasis mine] instead. This had nothing to do with the simulated and true tatting produced by various modern Needle Tatting techniques. Instead, it produced tatting using a netting and/or sewing needle (Riego) to shuttle the thread through picots. True tatting requires the use of the 'turned' half hitch. This can be accomplished by tatting with the hands, a shuttle, or, as described above, a sewing or netting needle. The Needle Tatting techniques that produce true tatted rings 'turn' the half hitches onto a 'core' needle before pulling the core thread through; this same technique can be done with a shuttle (clumsily) by 'turning' half hitches in the core thread and passing the shuttle through them. An early simulated tatting technique was the chain made of the 'unturned' half hitch. This technique of

Related Tools and Accessories by Pam Palmer A tatting shuttle is a small tool on which thread is wound to make a form of lace in the hand. This attractive book traces the story of the tatting shuttle from the earlier fabulous knotting shuttles of the eighteenth century to the decorative shuttles purchased as holiday souvenirs by the Victorian tourist and the craft made shuttles of today. There are many photographs in color and black and white of shuttles and accessories mostly in British collections. Additional illustrations from contemporary sources help to place the shuttles within a social context. Quilting Knitting is similar in origin to weaving and to the netting and knotting of fishnets and snares. The Scots claimed its invention and also its introduction into France. Hand-knitting needles are of bone, wood, steel, ivory, or celluloid. Two needles with heads are required for flat or selvage work; three or more, pointed at both ends, for tubular work such as hose; and for larger tubular work, a circular needle. The first knitting machine, invented in England in 1589 by William Lee, was refused a patent by Queen Elizabeth on the grounds that it would curtail the work of hand knitters. In 1864, William Cotton patented a machine by which garments and the heels and toes of hosiery might be shaped. Automatic machines were first introduced in 1889. In weft knitting, which includes hand knitting, the fabric is constructed in horizontal courses with one continuous yarn. The basic stitches are the plain, purl, and rib.
