Tasmanian Devil’s Death Marks End of Era at Zoo Coolah, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo’s only Tasmanian devil and the last devil to live anywhere in the world outside Australia, died today. He was 7-1/2 years old. Zoo keepers learned last month that Coolah had inoperable cancer. “We provided supportive care to keep Coolah comfortable,” says Australian Adventure Zoologist Elaine Kirchner. But it became clear this week that Coolah’s quality of life had deteriorated, and the zoo staff made the difficult decision to euthanize Coolah. A necropsy was to be performed this afternoon by Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo veterinarian Dr. Joe Smith and was expected to confirm the cancer diagnosis. Coolah was born in January 1997 at the Cincinnati Zoo. He came to Fort Wayne through a loan agreement with the Toronto Zoo. Coolah gained notoriety last spring when Gillian, a female Tasmanian devil at the San Diego Zoo, died, leaving him as the only Tasmanian devil in the world to live outside of Australia.

The facial tumour disease that has wiped out nearly one-third of the creatures since the mid-1990s may be spreading through physical contact THE facial tumour disease that has wiped out nearly one-third of Tasmanian devils since the mid-1990s might be spreading through the transfer of cancerous cells between the animals during physical contact. "It's still just a hypothesis, but we think the cells themselves might be acting as an infectious agent," says Stephen Pyecroft, a veterinary pathologist and head of the Devil Facial Tumour Disease project in Tasmania. Pyecroft's team tested 81 diseased animals from all over Tasmania and found that their tumours were all essentially the same. They develop in neuroendocrine tissue and affect the animal's mouth, head or neck regions. In one in five cases the aggressive cells spread to other parts of the body. The researchers don't yet know if the animals mount any kind of immune response, but if they do, it is not strong enough to beat the disease. "Once a devil develops a tumour it seems ... Profile - Tasmanian Devil
Tasmanian Devil Sarcophilus harrisii
The largest living marsupial carnivore, the Tasmanian devil is the size of a small, stoutly-built dog. Ideal for their role as Australia's only specialized mammalian scavenger, devils have a massive head with powerful jaws and strong teeth. Indeed, their scientific name means flesh ( Sarco -) lover (- philus ). Males at 9 kg are larger than females 7 kg; occasionally, males can reach a massive 12 kg. Their jet black fur, unusual for marsupials, is usually marked with white on the chest and sometimes on the rump. While their black colour, pink ears that flush purple when they are agitated, and their blood-curdling nocturnal screams probably earnt them their common name, their true nature, wary though somewhat belligerent, belies their reputation.
Once occurring across the Australian mainland, devils disappeared there after the arrival of the dingo. They are now restricted to Tasmania (Bass Strait prevented dingoes from getting here). Devils reach highest abundances in the dry eucalypt forests and woodlands in northern Tasmania but are found all over the island state. Populations have fluctuated in the past but their status is now under review for nomination as 'threatened' due to the alarming spread of a little understood devil facial tumour disease which kills individuals before maturity .

Disease could deal a deathblow to Tasmanian devil population
Cleanup crew By Sandra Blakeslee
NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE June 15, 2005 Sarcophilus harrisii "If they contract the disease, devils may be headed for extinction in the wild," said Nick Mooney, a wildlife biologist with Tasmania's Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment in Hobart. "If they're free of the disease, we may have reason for hope." Right now, wildlife experts are struggling to comprehend the nature of the fast-moving epidemic. Moving at a rate of six to 10 miles a year, it is 100 percent fatal. Only the west coast, isolated by mountain ranges inhospitable to devils, is disease-free. Nearly half of the estimated 150,000 devils in Tasmania are now dead. Cleanup crew Devil facial tumor disease is grotesque; the mother of Rosie and her brothers died when tumors ballooned out of her face and neck, choking off her ability to eat. It is also an extraordinary puzzle. Scientists do not understand its cause, mode of transmission, time from infection until the tumors appear, or potential to infect other species.

By Guardian Newspapers, 4/9/2004 Hollywood hopes to help prevent the demise of the Tasmanian devil, a carnivorous marsupial whose animated namesake has earned millions as Bugs Bunny's arch-enemy.
Environmentalists have approached Warner Bros to help fund research into a mystery disease which has wiped out half the animals in four years. Facial tumours grow and spread through the creatures' bodies, killing up to 90% of all devils in some areas.
The mostly black, nocturnal marsupial, which grows to the size of a small stocky dog and weighs about 12kg (25lb), was named by European settlers 200 years ago for its snarls and spine-chilling screeches, fierce displays and powerful jaws. These are four times as strong as a similar sized dog and can crunch through animal bones.
International fame for the devil arrived with the 1954 cartoon with Bugs Bunny.

GEORGE NEGUS: G'day. Welcome to a special program focusing on the future of the country's animal species. September 7 next week is National Threatened Species Day. Tonight, a gander at why some of our species are so low in numbers that their very survival is in doubt. Not a new problem, by any means, but definitely one to revisit. We'll also be looking at good animal habitats in our zoos. But first, the Tasmanian devil is one of this country's native animal icons but apparently, it's been struck by a shocking cancer that's decimating the adult devil population.
SIMON WATT, REPORTER: Meet the world's largest carnivorous marsupial, the Tasmanian devil. It's the Tasmanian icon with a somewhat undeserved reputation for fierceness.
