Tasmanian Devils!... event: Quest Travel venue: Chez Nous review date: Saturday, 18 June 2005 James Brooks review Over forty of Brighton's businesses and personalities were in attendance for a very civilised evening of drinks on the Chez Nous lawn and a Tasmanian inspired dinner (which included the chance to try a bit of Kangaroo...) Tasmania was presented by Quest Travel and the Tasmanian Tourism Office as a much-misunderstood longhaul destination - having previously had a rather homophobic reputation. This has completely changed with new laws and policies regarding same-sex relationships and legislation that put this Antipodean Island high in the league tables of LGBT awareness. With beautiful landscapes, a warm welcome and one of the world's ten best beaches, this is a truly unspoilt part of the world to try and should certainly be part of any itinerary if you're heading down under. ABC Online - Australia
A facial tumour disease is continuing to ravage Tasmania's wild devils, with almost half of the devil population believed lost to the disease. Fears the disease is spreading have been realised, with 3 new cases discovered in the south of the state.
The Devil Task force has released a report detailing progress made over the past 12 months [see part 2 below]. Project manager Alistair Scott says they have established a strong base of information about the disease, but they are yet to discover how or why it is killing so many Tasmanian devils.
The disease has now spread across 65 per cent of the state, with 3 new cases discovered in southern Tasmania. "The disease is across the eastern part of the state and extends as far west as the Cradle Valley, and also down into the south of the state," he said. "To date we haven't recorded the disease on the west coast or in the far north-west, so it's in the eastern parts of the state that the disease is having the greatest impact."
Mr Scott says they do not know how long it will take to find a cause and a cure. "We are dealing with a new disease here that hasn't been recorded anywhere else in the world," he said. Mr Scott estimates that almost one half of the devil population has been lost to the disease.

ESPN2 TV: In search of Tasmanian devils 'Fly Fishing the World' targets behemoth rainbow trout Down Under By Lynn Burkhead ESPNOutdoors.com associate editor
  • For a complete schedule of this weekend's ESPN Outdoors block of programs, click here Greg LeMond gets his hook into a Tasmanian devil, er, rainbow.
OK Taz, move over. There's another devil in town, much to the delight of globe-trotting trout bums. Huge rainbow trout are taking flies on the Australian island state of Tasmania. That's what ESPN Outdoors' John Barrett, host of "Fly Fishing the World," discovered when he and cycling legend Greg LeMond traveled Down Under to film a couple of shows about the surprising trout population. The second show airs from the trout rich, still waters of London Lakes Lodge this Saturday morning on ESPN2 at 9:30 ET. While Tasmania may conjure up images of a certain cartoon character more than trophy trout, "Fly Fishing the World" producer Bob Ambrose said the 26,383-square-mile island state lying 150 miles south of Melbourne has more than a few devilishly big trout inhabiting its clear, cold waters. "They're fishing for rainbows and brown trout on these shows," Ambrose said.

Death occurs within three to five months, usually from starvation as weakened animals lose the ability to compete for food. "The state population has halved already," he said. Devils muscular, short-legged animals the size of a small dog but with jaws powerful enough to crush bones live wild only in Tasmania. There are only about 120 of the animals in captivity, all but one of them in Australia. The threat to Tasmanian devils is such that the Hollywood entertainment giant Warner Brothers which made the feisty creatures internationally famous through the cartoon character "Taz" approached state officials to learn more about the crisis. "Warner Brothers are interested in the welfare of Taz's cousins and there might be something more formal they could offer to help," said Tony Scott, an aide to state Environment Minister Bryan Green. Experts from around Australia and beyond gathered in the Tasmanian city of Launceston earlier this month to develop a strategy for finding the causes of DFTD and battling the disease. "Our big problem is that we don't even know for sure if this is an infectious disease or not," Mooney told AFP.

Tasmanian Devil Sarcophilus harrisi
This tough little carnivore resembles, in some respects, a small bear. Found today only on the island of Tasmania, south of Australia, it is still fairly common there and protected by the government. Weighing between 6 and 10 kg, it received its name from the early white settlers on whose poultry and other small stock it often preyed. In the wild, its main food supply consists of small wallabies and kangaroos, birds, lizards and probably frogs and crayfish. Equipped with powerful jaws, it is not hesitant to attack animals much larger than itself. When excited, the pale ears gradually turn red. Despite its ferocious reputation, the little “devils” have proven to be easily tamed and, indeed, have become affectionate and playful companions. They are very clean, fond of water, and love to bask in the sun.

T a s m a n i a n D e v i l harrisii Sarcophilus By Nicholas and Sam. DESCRIPTION: The Tasmanian Devil is never mistaken to be another animal, because it is the only animal with a spine-curdling scream. Foreign settlers called it "The Devil". The Tasmanian Devil can grow to 1.1 meters long, up to 80 cm tall and looks pretty much like a small wolf. It is the size of a small terrier dog and weighs in between 6-8 kg. It is normally black with a white ring around its neck. The Tasmanian Devil has an extremely powerful jaw and a very powerful head with very pointy, sharp teeth. Transportation: A young Tasmanian Devil can climb very well. Older Devils cannot do it as well as young Devils. They use their huge footpads on their back-legs as contact grips which helps them climb over rocks in order to get to places quicker. The Devils can also swim very well. However, if the female has a baby in her pouch, they do not swim long distances, (only short distances). This allows them, to get away from some predators. Behavior: The Devil is nocturnal. In the day it hides in a den or dense bush. It usually ambles, but can run very fast if needed. It roams dirt tracks in search of food.

http://www.pbs.org/edens/tasmania/sympathy.html
By Alexander Kabat
I am a postgraduate student (Ph.D.) working on heat production in the Tasmanian devil ( Sarcophilus harrisii ), among other marsupials, at the University of Tasmania. I have been working with the Tasmanian devil for almost two years now.
The devil has been described as a fierce, bloodthirsty creature that stalks the night looking for food, fighting and crying with blood-chilling scream. Although made famous by Warner Brothers cartoons, compared to many of its fellow marsupials there is relatively little known about this animal. I must admit the idea working with a mysterious, fearsome, deadly creature of the night attracted me to the devil immediately. However, after almost two years of working with the devil and enjoying myself immensely, I could not have been more wrong about this animal. It is secretive and shy, but deadly and fearsome? I feel its reputation is very undeserving.
In the wild, these animals must compete for everything, including food, shelter, and mating, and these activities are usually accompanied with growls and the telltale devil's scream. My first close encounter with a devil (like most people) was in a wildlife park. It was feeding time, and the devils were hungry. The keeper was coming around with buckets of wallaby meat, and was piling it into the cage of two devils. The devils' screams could be heard across the park, their teeth bared and jaws snapping it looked likely that a fight would ensue. This continued until each devil had grabbed and consumed their fill.
