The first thing I want to say about tarantulas is that there are many many different kinds of tarantulas…. Only a few of them are docile enough to hold. Even the ones that are docile enough to hold still can bite. Your pet tarantula may never do so but it is not an impossibility. I personally do not handle them. My choices are mostly for the safety of the tarantula. The may look big and hardy but they are actually very delicate and I’ve been doing this long enough to see many “experts” have accidents. I’m not saying that you cannot do this as we have all probably seen someone handle them. I am only saying there are good reasons for not doing so. Though no tarantula to date can be considered deadly, several species can inflict bites which will result in local effects of varying severity including reddening of the affected area, pain, swelling, joint pains and cramps. Fortunately, these symptoms often disappear after periods ranging from a few hours to a few days. Tarantulas also have another defense – the hair on their bodies. When disturbed many tarantulas will flick hairs off

However some of the tropical tarantulas can be very poisonous, so caution is very much advised before starting with tarantulas. Some of the pages listed below have very good advice on the care of tarantulas and what you need to look out for. As in everything in life, learn before you start. Tarantulas
At least one species of tarantula is common in Oklahoma and it's a non-aggressive and relatively harmless member of the community. The large brown/black spider known as the "tarantula" in Oklahoma is Aphonopelma baergi [formerly Dugesiella hentzi ] , sometimes called the "Oklahoma Brown". When full-grown, they can be more than three inches long.
Although some people capture wild Oklahoma tarantulas as pets because of their impressive size and generally passive demeanor, it's not recommended; their venom is relatively mild (comparable to a bee/wasp sting) and they are generally very docile, but, they will bite if pressed.
Often, a tarantula's first line of defense is to use its hind legs to rub tiny hairs off its abdomen. These tiny, hollow, needlelike hairs are irritating to the skin of some people and may even cause anaphylactic shock in sensitized people.
Warning number two may be when they raise their front legs in a defensive/aggressive posture, showing you've violated their comfort zone. Biting may follow if you continue to threaten the spider through handling or movements.
And, if you accidentally drop it while handling it

The Tarantulas project
08:17 AM locative robots Engineers from the Institute of Infocomm Research and the National University of Singapore are developing robots that can communicate with each other and work together as a team, without having to rely on a central command centre. "We can send in a swarm of robots, say to search a building on fire, to search for human survivors. One group of robots could be in charge of searching, while another group is equipped with video transmission equipment, explains Winston Seah who leads the Tarantulas (The All-teRrain Advanced NeTwork of Ubiquitous MobiLe Asynchronous Systems) project. "When a search robot locates a survivor, it can then inform the video robot to come by and take video feeds of the location and situation of the survivor and transmit the images back to the command centre." A relative positioning system removes the need to use an absolute location estimation system like GPS which requires a lot of power and doesn't work indoors. "By continually communicating with each other, these advanced robots are able to estimate their relative positions to each other and to the objects and subjects around the vicinity,' he added", added Seah. Working prototypes should be ready by March or April this year.

Tarantulas as Pets
By Jonathan Rheins Do tarantulas really make good pets? Well, that really depends on a few factors, namely, what the keeper intends on getting out of having a pet tarantula. If you are in search of a cuddly pet to snuggle with on a cold night, then a tarantula is not for you. If your looking for a critter to carry around with you on your shoulder when you go shopping, then a tarantula is not for you. However, if you are searching for a truly unique and fascinating pet, one that requires minimal daily maintenance and even less physical contact, then look no further. A tarantula is for you. Why Keep a Tarantula?
