Abstract This lab is set up to research and observe two different tarantula species (Pink Salmon Brazilian Birdeater- Lasiodora parahybana and California Ebony- Aphonopelma eutylnum ) and their reaction to the environment around them in varying climates. They will be tested in three different climates: one above average, one below average, and one at room temperature (the control). Their weight, span, food intake, and behavior will be closely observed by the four lab members, as well as the rest of the class, for the duration of the semester. The observations will take place once a day, twice a week, for the next four weeks. I. Introduction

I have been keeping tarantulas since 1994, currently my collection is around 15 spiders. At one time I had 25, all of different species. Tarantulas make great pets as long as you have the right attitude. They are not active, or interactive. Tarantulas are best viewed like tropical fish, interesting to watch but not to touch. Click here for information on tarantula care and housing. Most people have an adverse reaction when they hear you keep tarantulas. Some common misconceptions are that all tarantulas are mean and go out of their way to attack you, and that their venom is deadly. In reality most tarantulas (except for a few select species) will do anything to avoid people and only bite as a last resort. The majority of tarantulas have venom similar to a bee sting, causing minor swelling and discomfort. The major danger from a tarantula bite is an allergic or anaphalactic reaction to the venom, which can occur. New!

Caption and Photo Credit The Desert Tarantula is the largest spider in our area. It can sometimes measure up to 3 inches in body length. Male and female tarantulas look alike when they are young but when they mature into adults the female develops a larger abdomen while the male tends to be darker in color than the female. Tarantulas are found over much of the southwestern United States, in Central American and down into South America. There are about 30 species of tarantula which live in Arizona. The tarantula is a hunting spider. It feeds on insects, primarily beetles and grasshoppers and other small creatures including young rodents. Its large fangs are used to inject venom (poison) into its prey. The tarantula is not only predator but also prey itself. The tarantula is prey to the Pepsis wasp, coatis, skunks, coyotes and many other desert omnivores. As a means of defending itself against these predators, the tarantula kicks the barbed hairs from the back of its abdomen into the face of the potential predator. These barbed hairs cause much irritation to the attacker who is distracted allowing the tarantula to make its escape. The fangs are seldom used on humans and do not cause any serious complications. Tarantulas are usually very easy going animals and are not easily provoked (pushed) to bite. The tarantula lives much longer than other spiders. It takes 8 to 10 years for a tarantula to mature. The female spends most of her time underground and rarely wanders. She lays her eggs in her burrow and may lay 200-300 eggs at one time. She may live as long as 25 years. The male is the more commonly seen. He wanders about at night and during the cool time of the day, particularly in late summer and fall when seeking a mate. The male lives only one season past sexual maturity.

Tarantulas Originally, the word "tarantula" was the name of a specific species of wolf spiders called the Lycosa tarantula. People were scared of this spider, because they believed unfoundedly that it spread the disease "tarantism" in southern Europe. The illness, thought to be inflicted by tarantulas' bites, was first recorded in medical journals in the 14th century. Tarantism reached its peak in the 17th century. According to the local belief, the only cure was to dance to certain music tarantella for days or even weeks.
Nowadays, the word "tarantula" has taken on a new meaning to include not only Lycosa tarantula of the Lycosidae family, but also members of several different spider families (such as the Theraphosidae, the Dipluridae, the Atypidae, and the Hexathelidae.) Hence, there are more than 850 different species of tarantulas under this broader definition.

http://www.yptenc.org.uk/docs/factsheets/animal_facts/tarantulas.html
Tarantulas The name tarantula is generally applied to any large, hairy spider, especially to the furry, bird eating spiders of South America. The tarantula spiders come only from southern Europe and are normally no more than 4cm in length. The only tarantula-related species found in Britain is the rare purse-web spider, Alypus affinis . There are about 300 species of tarantulas worldwide and they are amongst the largest and longest living of all land invertebrates. Distribution: throughout the warmer parts of the world, but mainly in the American tropics. Habitat: mainly forest, often living on tree trunks. Some live in a silk-lined burrow on the forest floor. The 40 or so different tarantulas in the U.S.A. live on the ground in the warm deserts of the south-west. Description: 8 legs, various shades of brown, mixed with black. Some species, such as the Mexican red-kneed tarantula display bright colours. A cluster of tiny eyes on top of the head. Whole body covered in hairs.

http://cecalaveras.ucdavis.edu/tara.htm
Tarantulas During the Fall of each year we tend to have an increase in calls regarding tarantulas. This is largely due to the fact that many can be seen in the evenings crawling out onto warm blacktop roads in the evening to savor the residual warmth. Occasionally, these very large, hairy spiders are found within a dwelling causing alarm and panic among those fearing spiders. Actually, most tarantulas are docile, non-aggressive and rarely bite. Bites are not considered dangerous and cause little lasting pain. Bites are no more painful than a bee sting, and its symptoms should be treated similarly. Some have a dense covering of special hairs on the abdomen, which, when dislodged, cause skin irritation. This is mechanical rather than chemical in nature. The name tarantula has unfortunately become associated with several spider families, but most often is applied to the ones called the hairy mygalmorphs. Tarantulas have been much publicized in horror shows in movie houses and television shows due to their forbidding hairy appearance. Identification The largest tarantulas are tropical with a body length of 3-1/2 inches and leg span of 9-1/2 inches. The largest United States' species has a body length of two inches and leg span of about six inches. These spiders are stout-bodied and covered with hollow, needlelike, barbed hairs, especially on the abdomen. When disturbed, the hind legs are used to scrape off and throw very fine (fiberglass-like) abdominal hairs in the direction of danger, resulting in a remaining bald spot. A bald spot may also occur on the abdomen prior to the shedding of the skin. Hairs may cause a skin rash, allergic reaction and possibly anaphylactic shock to certain individuals.

Subject: Tarantulas
The following are two posts related to "The Vibrating Cactus". The first was in response to a story in which a woman came in to find her new cactus (bought from a Korean import shop) torn up and some "tarantulas" wandering around in the house. The second was a pretty standard retelling of the tale [begin post] There are a few questions I would like to ask: 1) Where does your friend live?
2) What time of the year did this occur? 3) What exactly was the origin of the "cactus"? Did it come from Korea? 4) Are her grown children prone to practical jokes? 5) Did she have the "tarantulas" identified by a reliable party, and were they considered exotic or native? North American tarantulas are exclusively ground-dwellers; they live in burrows that they dig themselves or in existing holes (our California foothill tarantulas seem to prefer gopher holes.) They do not nest in plants, and they are not gregarious (only one spider per burrow.) During certain times of the year, adult (sexually mature) male tarantulas may be seen cruising for tarantula "chicks", that is, they are looking for love in all the right burrows. The normal breeding season for most US species is late summer to late fall. In some parts of the southwest, scores of wandering, horny male tarantulas can become a down-right nuisance. Is it possible that your friend just had a couple of love-starved male tarantulas wander in her house, coincidental to her cat ripping up the new plant?

Summer Rains Sound Like Love to
    Arizona Tarantulas
    by Sarah Horton
Lookin' for love...a tarantula on Highway 89A.
The already-lazy traffic comes to a halt one damp afternoon in the town of Jerome, Arizona. Two people are in the middle of the two-lane highway through town, holding up their hands to stop the cars and poking at something on the ground with their toes, ushering it slowly toward the curb. The drivers’ irritation reflex begins to kick in, until they see the cause for the holdup. It’s Arizona’s version of the Boston children’s classic Make Way for Ducklings – it’s Make Way for Aphonopelma Chalcodes, better known to most of us as the desert tarantula.
Like the thumping of bass or $2 draft beers for humans, summer rainstorms of the Arizona desert cue sexually mature male tarantulas to begin their single-minded quest to find females, marching stoically along to fulfill their romantic destinies, come rain, come Tarantula Hawk (a nasty wasp that lays its eggs in the spiders’ abdomens) or come Volkswagen. This is the time of year you’ll see them picking their determined way across highways, yards and occasionally into the bathrooms of Arizona homes from Tucson to Sedona, while the females wait in their burrows for their prince charming. Luckily for the resident Jerome tarantula, pictured here, a lot of Arizonans are big fans of these hairy arachnids, and go out of their way to protect it from human-caused perils, anyway.
