Tarantulas I rear tarantulas to provide a travelling show for elementary school classes. I keep both arboreal and burrowing tarantulas. Arboreal tarantulas generally live above the ground, often in trees. They spin a retreat of dense, white silk, in which they spend most of their time. Burrowing tarantulas live below ground, in a tunnel-like system that they build by excavating dirt with their legs and mouthparts. Tarantulas
I have been keeping tarantulas since 1994, currently my collection is around 15 spiders. At one time I had 25, all of different species. Tarantulas make great pets as long as you have the right attitude. They are not active, or interactive. Tarantulas are best viewed like tropical fish, interesting to watch but not to touch. Click here for information on tarantula care and housing. Most people have an adverse reaction when they hear you keep tarantulas. Some common misconceptions are that all tarantulas are mean and go out of their way to attack you, and that their venom is deadly. In reality most tarantulas (except for a few select species) will do anything to avoid people and only bite as a last resort. The majority of tarantulas have venom similar to a bee sting, causing minor swelling and discomfort. The major danger from a tarantula bite is an allergic or anaphalactic reaction to the venom, which can occur. New!

My Experiences of Beginning Tarantulas
Excited with Moulting
Observing moulting of tarantulas is surely one of the most exciting experience in keeping them. My sub-adult Chilean Common ( Phrixotrichus spatulata Grammostola rosea ), "Kana", moulted in November 1996, and I, for the first time observing it, got really excited. Around 10 o'clock, on her silk bed thicker than usual, she was up-side-down slowly folding and stretching the legs. I was observing with excitement, knowing this should be the sign of beginning of her moult (, otherwise people usually get upset doubting if it were dead with this posture). Tarantulas often go to long fasting before moulting, which make us more anxious. After two hours, the new body emerged from the slit in the back. It's mysterious how she gets new legs out of old skin as if she were "taking off" socks. may rather feel like watching "duplicating" spiders for it looks like two spiders tangled each other.

Urban Integrated Pest Management
Tarantulas
From: R.L. Smith, 1982. Venomous Animals of Arizona. The University of Arizona. Description: The term tarantula is a general one that refers to spiders belonging to the family Theraphosidae. These are the largest spiders in Arizona (and the world, for that matter). We have as many as 30 species in two genera ( Aphonopelma and Dugesiella —"hairy spiders."
Figure 9. A tarantula, Aphonopelma sp. Body length 65 mm. Biology: Tarantulas of the American Southwest spend most of their lives on or in the ground. They dig burrows when they are spiderlings and live in them for many years, enlarging them as necessary. Once established at a site, an individual tarantula usually spends its life there, hunting in an area only a few meters adjacent to its burrow. These spiders prefer open areas and avoid conditions of dense vegetation. Tarantula burrows are usually plugged with a loose webbing of silk when the spider returns after a night's foraging. During the winter when the spider is inactive, its burrow is usually plugged with silk, plant debris, and soil. Courtship involves cautious approach by the male, who touches the female with his front legs, then moves in a way that identifies both his gender and species. If the female is receptive to his tentative advances, she abandons her burrow and ultimately postures with her cephalothorax raised. She remains inactive while the male approaches her from the front. He uses special hooks (Figure 10) on the first pair of his walking legs to hold the female's fang-bearing chelicerae during insemination. After the sperm have been deposited in the female's abdominal genital opening, the male disengages his hooks and departs briskly.

Introduction
New or Old world Species
There are so many types of Tarantula in the world today with new species being identified every year makes the world of the Tarantula so interesting New World Species come from America and South America in Tropical and sub Tropical areas there is loads of species in say Mexico and for me thats where the true Tarantula origins from the Mexican Red Knee new world species differ from there cousins of the old world in they posess Urticating hairs which they throw at would be predators and my hand when I change water bowl etc I should wear rubber gloves as the hairs can be quite itchy and very uncomfortable whatever happens do not put you face near a hair kicker because if the hairs get in the eyes temporary blindness can occur. Old World Species These spiders range from Africa and Asia and do not have urticating hairs however they make up for it in aggression they have no scruples and will bite if felt threatened for me the most impressive spider in Africa is the King Baboon spider a very slow growing and long lived animal a true monster in the spider world the Cobalt Blue from Thailand is also very impressive a beautiful blue burrowing spider with a nasty attitude all old world Tarantulas are not recommended for beginners due to this aggression.

Terrific Tarantulas
Robert J. Wolff, Ph.D.
From the Biology Department,
Trinity Christian College, Palos Heights, Illinois 60463 The name "tarantula" means a variety of things to different people. It can mean the wolf spider from southern Italy, with its somewhat toxic bite, or the tailless whipscorpions, who belong to the family Tarantulidae. Or to many people, tarantula simply means any large, frightening spider they come across. Primarily, however, tarantula means the generally large, hairy spiders that belong to the family Theraphosidae. Spiders belong to the order Araneae, and the majority are considered true spiders, whose fangs point to the midline and open sideways. In contrast, fangs of the order Mygalomorphae open parallel to the long axis of the body. Mygalomorphs include the trapdoor and purseweb spiders, as well as those that are commonly called tarantulas and belong to the Theraphosidae.
Structure
Tarantulas are hairy, large (35 mm or more in length), and have the basic morphology of the true spiders (Fig. 1), including two body regions, the cephalothorax (prosoma) and the abdomen (opisthosoma). The appendages of the cephalothorax include four pairs of legs, a pair of pedipalps, and a pair of fang-tipped chelicerae. The abdomen differs from that of the true spiders by having posteriorly only two pairs of spinnerets rather than three pairs, and by having ventrally two pairs of booklungs rather than one pair. You can usually identify mature males by the special copulatory organs (palps) on the pedipalps, and by the hooks on the first pair of legs (Fig. 2). Adult females are not as easily identifiable because they often lack obvious external clues; only size and (in some) a swelling in the genital area at the ventral slit, called the epigastric furrow, allow a guess.
