Software Must Catch Up to Hardware for Multiplatform Tape Backups
by Alex Woodie
Companies today have the capability to run their nightly backups for multiple servers on a single tape drive or library, bringing them economic savings through hardware consolidation. Midrange tape vendors eStorage and GST , which have concentrated on serving OS/400 shops, are two of the latest to roll-out multiplatform support with their tape offerings. But when it comes to using a single piece of software to manage backups and recoveries for multiple platforms, OS/400 still presents difficulties, mandating a best-of-breed approach. eStorage's first offering for the multiplatform tape market is its 4575 series of automated tape libraries, which are manufactured by Qualstar and can be fitted with either AIT tape drives from Sony or LTO tape drives manufactured by IBM . The 4575 can be fitted with up to 12 AIT drives or up to 8 LTO drives which connect to the host via HVD or LVD SCSI interfaces or 2 Gigabit Fibre Channel links. Pricing starts at $18,400 for a library with two AIT drives. Up to this point, the 4575 had been limited to supporting AS/400 and iSeries servers. This month, the Irvine, California, company is selling an updated version of the 4575 that supports Windows 2000, Unix, and Linux in addition to OS/400. "More and more of our iSeries and AS/400 customers also have Windows or Unix systems," says John Gimpl, eStorage's executive vice president. "Our 4575 tape library now lets our customers easily and economically leverage a single set of tape resources across all of their systems, regardless of the manufacturer."

UNIX Tape Drives
This table gives the location and capabilities of the various public tape drives. These tape drives are made available primarily to enable the import of data sets created elsewhere or previously. Because tape drives wear out under constant use, these drives are not to be used to create system backups on a regular basis. You should buy your own tape drive for that purpose. ADVICE: Caveat emptor. Your mileage may vary. Multiple densities on recent drives usually stems from hardware compression, which produces tapes that may or may NOT be readable by other vendor's drives, even if they too support hardware compression. To increase the portability of your data, write it at a lower density. You should always label the tape with the parameters used to create it to have the best chance of extracting it on the other side (what operating system, which commands and their arguments, how many files are on the tape, etc.). Please leave a note on the tape drive while you are using it so others know how to reach you when they need the drive. If you are reading a tape which already contains data, you should move the write-protect tab to the proper position to prevent someone from inadvertently overwriting your data.

Tape storage’s enduring appeal defies predictions “Expect tape to remain entrenched in certain legacy markets; many new disk-based storage systems will complement tape, not replace it.”
Fara Yale, Gartner Dataquest When the Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889, it was not expected to remain in place for more than a decade or so. Over a century later, it not only remains but is at the heart of French identity. It’s a little like that with tape storage. It’s several years now since the first predictions that tape storage was on the way out. But not only is it still flourishing in the face of a host of new and far more whizzy storage technologies, it’s actually undergoing something of a quiet renaissance. Its strengths help explain why: it’s cheap, it works, it’s dependable, it doesn’t have to be fussed over or planned for. It just does the business, neither threatening to replace other technologies, nor seeming to be threatened by them. It has a niche of its own, and a major niche at that.

Netware 5.0 w/sp6a. ArcserveIT 6.6 For NetWare w/Tape Changer Library Option. We been having problems with failing DAT drives for the last several years. The drive now in use is a external 12/24GB Dat 8 Casette Autoloader. The day the problem began the backups were running without problem, I unloaded the software to put a tape in for my G-F-S monthly backup. Arcserve loaded and about half way through died. The errors from Arcserve indicate problems communicating with the SCSI device. I thought I had hit the power button on the drive which when that happens mandates a re-boot otherwise NetWare can't see the device. So I did. During POST, the drive WAS SEEN.

Tecmar developed products under the Wangtek(tm), WangDAT(R), Proline(R) and QualityTape(tm) brands. Tecmar's new Travan NS (network series) 20 GB tape drives have the highest capacity and fastest transfer rates of any Travan drives available. Delivering 20 gigabytes of compressed capacity at a transfer rate of more than 2 megabytes per second, the new drives are aimed at the popular, fast growing class of Windows NT servers and workstations. We tested the Tecmar Travan NS20 External SCSI unit over a period of 10 days. We did four daily backups of approximately 16GB each. Using 12 Imation Travan NS, 20GB tapes we created a rotating series of four generations of backup sets. The drive was connected through an Adaptec 2940 SCSI adapter to one of our secondary file servers - a dual Pentium II 350MHz machine with 256MB of RAM, running Windows NT 4.0 (SP4). We accessed the drive via three pieces of software: NovaNet Backup version 7, Seagate Backup Exec (which is bundled with the drive), and NT Backup which is integrated with Windows NT Server.

LTO Technology
LTO (Linear-Tape Open) technology on which Ultrium tape technology is based, is a multi-million dollar collaboration between HP, IBM and Certance. The LTO philosophy of openness and cooperation has ensured the backing of a wide range of tape drive, media and automation licensees, for an unprecedented level of competition within a single format. For customers, that means quality products, innovation and widespread availability at the best prices. Ultrium tape technology has been designed with an in-depth understanding of every key component in the backup/restore operation - host, interface, hardware, media, backup software, specific data types - and how these variables interact to affect backup performance. The very best features of existing tape storage technologies have been incorporated and enhanced to create a new benchmark for data integrity and reliability. A reliable and intelligent media
  • Up to 1 million passes through high-integrity, durable Ultrium media
  • Media profile and usage information can be read from cartridge memory away from the drive in a fraction of the time it takes to load and unload individual files
  • LTO-CD (cartridge memory) holds positioning information to facilitate fast access to individual files
  • Potential failure can be anticipated through problem diagnosis information such as the number of times the cartridge has been loaded, when it was last cleaned and error logs, all stored in the LTO-CM

Overview
The HP StorageWorks Ultrium 960 Tape Drive represents HP's third-generation of LTO tape drive technology. Positioned as the highest capacity drive in the StorageWorks family, the Ultrium 960 features an 800 GB compressed (2:1) storage capacity using new LTO 3 media. By doubling the capacity of current Ultrium drives, HP customers now require fewer data cartridges to meet their storage needs, significantly reducing their IT costs and increasing their ROI. The Ultrium 960 also features a compressed (2:1) data transfer rate of 160 MB/s. Using a new 16-channel recording head, an Ultra320 SCSI interface, and increases in media tracks and bit density, the HP Ultrium 960 sets a new performance benchmark as the world's fastest tape drive. For customers that continually experience shrinking backup windows, the Ultrium 960 is the ideal direct-attach backup storage solution for enterprise and mid-range server, as well as entry-level hard drive arrays.
