http://www.iol.ie/~ronolan/tapdance.html
Tap Dance's Irish Roots That dance challenge between Irish and black dancers in 'Riverdance' isn't something invented to woo American audiences. The links between Irish and tap dancing run deep in the immigrant tradition of 19th century America. The black dancers borrowed steps and rhythms from the Irish, blending an art form which was later to find expression in vaudeville and the spectacular choreography of American cinema.
In the earlier part of the century the Irish and blacks occupied the lowest rung of the American ladder. In an article in the 'International Tap Newsletter', Jane Goldberg writes that tap "came out of the lower classes, developed in competitive 'battles' on street corners by Irish immigrants and African American slaves." Another writer in the newsletter suggested that only in the great American melting pot "could Irish jigs combine with African shuffles and sand dances to form an entirely new and exciting art form." According to writer and critic Clive Barnes: "It was the Irish clog dancers who started tap dancing, but these Irish forms were clearly grafted onto existing slave dances that came directly from Africa."
An early feature of this story was the solo spectacular of Johnny Durang (1768-1822), a dance master in Philadelphia, who first established the step dance as a theatrical dance through his performance of the hornpipe. He was also the first Irish person we know of to blacken his face for performances.

So Why Tap Dance?
Tap Dancing with the Spartan Tappers has many benefits... Here are just a few:
  • Tap dancing is a great workout. Depending on your level, it can range from medium movement to fast-paced, high-energy full out dancing!
  • The Spartan Tappers offer three different levels to our members. Beginners come in with little or no experience, intermediates have tapped for a few years, and advanced members have taken tap for quite some time - so there is an appropriate level for everyone!
  • You can make some great friends in the Tappers! We work together as a group, teaching and helping each other out, so you can get to know your awesome fellow tappers pretty well in just a semester!
  • You gain coordination through tap dancing. We can't claim to turn a two-left-footer into a full fledged hoofer overnight, but we can certainly start you on your way.
  • There are some great leadership opportunities available. Whether you prefer administrative positions, like costume coordinator, or want to help teach or choreograph a level or two, once you've been in the group for a semester, you can step up into some great positions!

Savion Glover’s Improvography
BY JOHNETTE RODRIGUEZ Following the success of his Tony Award-winning Broadway hit Bring In ’da Noise, Bring In ’da Funk , choreographer and master tapper Savion Glover has created several other shows, both solo and with other dancers, that highlight the versatility of tap and celebrate new and veteran tap dancers. Glover’s dedication to his art has brought audiences a new appreciation of how precise and expressive a musical instrument a tap dancer can be. He kicked off a national tour of his newest work, Improvography II , in March in Los Angeles, and he will bring it to the Providence Performing Arts Center on Friday, May 20 (call [401] 421-ARTS). Tap Dogs turns dance form on its toes
Reporter: Rebecca Baillie
MAXINE McKEW: Now to something in a very different vein. Ten years ago, an unknown steelworker from Newcastle took the art form made famous by tap dancers Gene Kelly, Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire and turned it on its toes. Since then Dein Perry and his show, Tap Dogs , have enjoyed huge international success with their own fast and furious brand of dance. Now the show is back touring Australia, and Dein Perry is passing on his prowess to the next generation. Rebecca Baillie reports.
DEIN PERRY: I grew up in Newcastle, I left school when I was 16. I got a job in the steelworks. We didn't finish work until the sun come up, we didn't start till about 11 o'clock at night, and there was plenty of time to dream - well, not dream - I had to think about what else could I do with my life. The only other thing I knew was dancing.
REBECCA BAILLIE: 10 years ago, fitter and tuner-turned-tap dancer Dein Perry burst out of the steelworks and onto the stage with his dynamic show

Tap dance is a rhythmic sound danced mostly with feet, and it also a keeps a steady dance movement beat.
History of Tap
"Tap dance" first appeared in around the late 1920s. Tap dance is a style of American theatrical dance, distinguish by different steps of footwork, which marks out accurate rhythmic patterens on the floor. Several expressive step names are brush, flap, shuffle, and ball change.
The style was futher extended in the late 1930s and the early 1940s, when dancers such as Fred Astaire,Paul Draper,Ray Bolger, and, in the late 1950s,Gene Kelly added different movements from ballet and modern dance. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, curiosity in tap dance underwent renaisance.
Helpful Hints
Tap dance plays a host to the latest tap dance sites composed completely by authors and tap dancers. Although tap dancing is an American art form, it has many Irish and old English steps and roots.
Students that tap-dance work hard to accomplish knowledge of rhythm, musicality, and a sence of balance with rapid changes. Classes consists of warm-ups, which will help the dancers better with these things. Breathing with balance, foot and ankle exercises, techniques, learning tap steps and rhythms, and choreography(putting all the steps together). Tap is one of our most popular dances.

Maryse Young teaches tap/ballet, and she's great. My daughter started dancing there rather late, when she was in 6th grade, and she loves it! They have Saturday and afternoon classes. If you don't get a call back after leaving a message, just show up one Saturday morning at 9:15 for the beginning class, and watch and talk to Maryse. The studio is an old converted carriage house behind the main house, through a gate. Good luck! spichler
