"13 Chapters on Celtic Taoism"
by Frank Allen

A short introduction to the book - and - the Idea CELTIC TAOISM is founded on the idea that all seperations exist only for the potential of union. The blending of the basic philosophy of Northern Asia with the root culture of Northern Europe shows the syncretic harmony which exists, inherently, in ideas from the oppposite ends of the earth. This represents the, all important, potential for the unity of humankind. An idea that may be essential to the continued existence of man. Seperation, in a time of overpopulation, can only lead to chaos. Unity, with respect for Individuality, can lead to evolvement, instead of following chaos into extinction. "The Thirteen Chapters" are only the foundational guidelines, which are devised to provoke thought and commentary. They are as follows:
  • The Birth of a Sect; explains the beginnings. Why Celtic Taoism?; answers the basic question. shows the Yin and Yang of East and West. The Morality of No Morality expounds Balance over Good and Evil Thierna-Na-Oge and the Taoist Transitions of the Death Cycle;

Chad Hansen's Chinese Philosophy Pages Daoist-oriented interpretations This site contains segments of an extended interpretive theory of Classical Chinese philosophy that takes Daoism (Taoism) as the philosophical center . The interpretive theory turns on a new, more philosophical reading of the Daoist philosopher ). My analysis highlights skeptical and relativist themes in his thinking. The crucial novelty is the assumption that Zhuangzi was a philosopher of language , like his close friend and philosophical interlocutor, Hui Shi , . He was deeply engaged with the linguistic and other insights of the Later Mohists (sometimes called Neo-Mohists or Dialectical Mohists) and the School of Names . His relation to the other famous Daoist, Laozi (Lao Tzu) is rather more indirect dao guide at a higher level than do Confucians or Mohists. The site also contains my related writings about Confucianism, Mohism Legalism and some reflections on Asian values human rights and rule of law If you find the interpretive approach and style worthwhile, you may be interested in my systematic and more complete treatment of Chinese thought. I am please to report that Oxford University Press has reissued my book, A Daoist Theory of Chinese Thought , in affordable paperback (at last!). You can find it at

    Major Chinese religio-philosophical tradition.
Though the concept of tao was employed by all Chinese schools of thought, Taoism arose out of the promotion of tao as the social ideal. Laozi is traditionally regarded as the founder of Taoism and the author of its classic text, the Tao-te ching. Other Taoist classics include the Zhuangzi (4th-3rd century BC) and the Liezi.
In Taoism, tao is the force or principle about which nothing can be predicated, but that latently contains the forms, entities, and forces of all phenomena. This natural wisdom should not be interfered with; de, or superior virtue, is acquired through action so entirely in accordance with the natural order that its author leaves no trace of himself in his work. The tradition holds that all beings and things are fundamentally one.
Taoism's focus on nature and the natural order complements the societal focus of Confucianism, and its synthesis with Buddhism is the basis of Zen.

by Shifu Hwang Once upon a time, there was a country village. A beautiful place located at the hill of Huang Mountain. There were four boys and one girl who had been friends since childhood. They grew up and saw each other every day in the same village. One day the girl became sick and seemed to be running out of chances to recover her health. The four men wept deeply for their friend. A Taoist passed by, heard their lamenting and asked for the reason why. The Taoist simply handed them a prescription which included several herbal names as: Ahryranthis Bidentatae Radix, Morindae Radix, Polygoni Multiflori Radix, Polygalae Radix, Rehmanniae Radix, Cuscutae Semen..etc.

    Part 4: Taoism and modernity
    By Henry C K Liu
  • Part 1: The race toward barbarism
  • Part 2: That old time religion
  • Part 3: Rule of law vs Confucianism
To Taoists, modernity is a meaningless concept because truth is timeless and life goes in circles. In post-modern thinking in the West, much of the awareness that Taoists have entertained for centuries is just now surfacing. Even in military strategy, Sun Tzu's On the Art of War (Sunzi Bingfa), an ancient Taoist military treatise (500 BC), is now much in vogue in this modern age of weapons of mass destruction and remote-controlled precision bombs.
Historians are uncertain of the historical facts regarding Laozi, founder of Taoism. The name itself casts doubt on Laozi's identity. Ad verbum

Jump to Fun and painless way to learn about Chinese Philosophy Confucius said, "Respect the gods and the devils but keep them at a distance."
    Preamble
I am interested in, but far from being an expert of, oriental philosophies. The purpose of this section is to help promote Buddhism and Taoism as philosophies and at the same time dispel the general perception that Buddhism and Taoism are mere idol worships, incense burning and fortune telling. I am neither a Buddhist nor a Taoist and do not agree with everything they say. For buddhism, I am intrigued by the way they look at nature. I am attracted to their idea that: "Emptiness or Imperceptibles" (Huon/Kung) Sunyata is the "real world", imperceptible to our senses ; "Form" (Sik) is our "perception" of the "Impercetibles" ; and finally, , is the "representations" we made from the "forms" we have in our minds. This is very similar to the Quantum Mechanical view of: Huon= wave function before a measurement; Sik=result of the measurement ; Shan=representation of the result of the measurement.
As to Taoism, I am drawn to it by their idea of an "Indifferent Universe". (The universe does not give a damn !) It is up to the "Sage"; or a "Benevolent Ruler" to make life better for everyone.

Become a Link Partner Search PTC for: Taoism and Tai Chi Chuan by Sifu James Leporati , L. Ac. Outside of Confucianism, Taoism is probably the most important and influential school of thought native to China. In almost direct contrast to the solemn gravity and social responsibilities endemic to Confucian ideals, where the rectification of human actions and interactions is paramount, the Taoists prize contemplation of the natural world. In this world, man is not a central but almost an incidental figure. The Taoist often forsakes society and worldly affairs in order to embrace the Tao or "Way," to bring himself better into harmony with the flow of nature and to pierce through the veils of illusion and artifice that human civilizations, with their many facets and complexities, seem to constantly weave. These two schools of thought then, Confucianism and Taoism, stand in opposition to one another. Each expresses a different aspect of the Chinese psyche. While Confucius would have us dwell in the orderly world of mundane human intercourse, the Taoists offer us a more mystical and transcendental world of the spirit and promise us a deeper insight into the principles that underlie the very operation of the universe itself. Taoism stresses harmonizing the mind and body in order to attune oneself to the natural order.
