Legge tr. 66,099 bytes The Tao te Ching is one of the most widely read sacred texts, due to its simplicity and depth. It appeal is universal, and has been found relevant by Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and even Quantum Physicists. Attributed to Lao-tzu, (580-500 B.C.), it may predate him by several centuries. The earliest known manuscripts of the Tao te Ching date to the third century B.C. This translation is excerpted from Volume 39 of the Sacred Books of the East. Volume 39 of the Sacred Books of the East. Volume 40 of the Sacred Books of the East. This is a detailed etext of volume one and two of the Sacred Books of the East Taoist translations by James Legge. Both of these volumes were published in 1891. The first volume contains Lao-tzu's Tao te Ching and the first half of the Writings of Chuang-tzu, including the notes and introductory material. The second volume completes the Writings of Chuang-tzu, and includes several other Taoist texts, including the Tai Shang Tractate. Volume two also includes a detailed index for both volumes. The Canon of Reason and Virtue This is another translation of the Tao te Ching. This etext includes the complete Chinese text of the Tao te Ching as embedded graphics.

Laozi was the original and the only philosopher of Taoism. He has influenced many Chinese thinkers: Confucius, Sun Tzu, Han fei Tzu, and of course Chuang Tzu. However, Zhuangzi(Chuang Tzu) had romanticized his themes, he was thus more a man of letters. Sunzi(Sun Tzu), who was said to be once taught by Laozi personally, has established himself as a great military strategist. Hanfeizi wrote extensively on Legalism, whereas he was the first person interpreting

Taoism
(TAO-KIAO.) Taoism is the second of the three state religions ( San-kiao ) of China. This religion is derived from the philosophical doctrines of Lao-tze. "Lao-tze's Taoism", says Legge (Religions of China, 229), "is the exhibition of a way or method of living which men should cultivate as the highest and purest development of their nature". According to De Groot (Religious System of China, IV, p. 66): "Taoism, as the word indicates, is the Religion of the Tao, a term meaning Path or Way, but denoting in this peculiar case the way, course or movement of the Universe, her processes and methods. In other words, Taoism is the Religion of Heaven and Earth, of the Cosmos, of the World or Nature in the broadest sense of these words. Hence we may call it Naturism". B.C. ; if the latter was then fifty-one years old according to Chwang-tze, Lao-tze was then one hundred and four years old. This story is too matter of fact and lacks the marvellous legend which should surround the person of the chief of a new religion. Legend was provided for. Ko Hung, already mentioned, had placed the legend of Lao-tze at the beginning of the "Shon-sion-ch'-wan" (Records of Spirits and Immortals), and he says: "His mother carried him after the emotion she felt in seeing a large shooting star. He received from Heaven the vital breath; as he was born in a house whose proprietor was called Li (Pear tree), so he was named Li". Some authors say that Lao-tze was born before heaven and earth. According to others, he possessed a pure soul emanated from heaven, He belonged to the Class of spirits and gods.

Where seekest thou? That freedom, friend, this world nor that can give! In books and temples vain thy search – for thine is the hand that holds the rope that drags thee on! Then cease lament and let go thy hold…. - Swami Vivekananda, July 1895 The Quest For every person that starts on a spiritual quest, several would ask why? When we are happy with this world, why do we need to ask these hard questions? Why would anyone perfectly happy with the status quo start on a quest? The seeker is one who is not happy with the explanation of the world (scientific or religious). Because there comes a time when there is abundant joy or acute pain or we are faced with the death of a loved one. Even those that brave through these without asking the Question face the prospect of death someday and ask “Is this world real?”, “was my life real?”, “Is there something beyond this life?”. These questions create a sense of fear, while most philosophies and religions describe death as a “peaceful” process! (Tao says it is the “return to where we came from” – interestingly, this does not contradict with any belief system including that of the atheist or believer!)

There is a thing, formless yet complete. Before heaven and earth it existed. We do not know its name, but we call it Tao. It is the Mystery of Mysteries.

The Tao te Ching is the oldest scripture of Taoism. It was composed during the warring states period when China descended into a chaos of rival kingdoms, some time between the sixth and the fourth or third centuries BC. It was supposedly written by Lao Tan, a possibly mythical figure, said to have lived till he was 160 or 200 years old. The classical Chinese historian Ssuma Chien says the work was by Li Erh, a custodian of imperial archives from the state of Ch'u in southern China, in the present province of Honan. This was a fertile, well-watered state. "Its people make little exertion, delight in life, and neglect to store anything." Li Erh was no seeker after fame. "The chief aim of his studies was how to keep himself concealed and remain unknown." says Ssuma Chien. Li Erh wrote his ideas only because, as he was heading into retirement, the royal gatekeeper pleaded with him to record his ideas before he disappeared into oblivion. He may have written the book under the pseudonym Lao Tan to avoid attention.

What's behind the sense of "I am"? Who's living, and who's facing death? Who or what am I, essentially? Will some part of me continue on after death? Is there an unchanging, eternal part of me? Am I a part of some unchanging, eternal essence? Throughout history occasional individuals have told of finding the answer to those questions, and their testimonies often have a surprising consistency. And as my friend and teacher Richard Rose wrote: "Beyond the mind is a golden find...." For individuals seeking to find the answer for themselves, those testimonies provide helpful clues for pursuing the search to a successful conclusion. For some searchers, working by themselves is the preferred method. Others intuit that finding a few fellow seekers to work with may expedite their progress. Still more fortunate may be those who find a living person who has made the journey and can provide assistance from the perspective of that realization. The Self-Discovery site is designed to offer all three modes of help. Site Diagram Philosophical Self-Inquiry home page and calendar Monday, Sep 26:

  • Sacred or Revered Texts The most recognized Taoist text is the Tao Te Ching, "The Way of Power," or "The Book of the Way." It is believed to have been written by Lao-Tse but there is a great deal of controversy surrounding the authorship. Most scholars today believe that the Tao Te Ching wasn't written until about 300 to 250 B.C.E. Recent studies even suggest that the Tao Te Ching may have actually been written within a circle of scholarly men. The Tao Te Ching describes the nature of life, the way to peace, and how a ruler should lead his life. The book itself is very short. It is only 5000 characters contained in 81 chapters. The Tao Te Ching is divided into two parts: the Tao-ching and the Te-ching. Very early in history it is possible that these two texts existed individually, however, at some time they were translated together and remain this way today. Chuang-tzu (named after its author) is the second most recognized Taoist text. The Chuang-tzu contains additional teachings relevent to Taoism. It describes Taoist philosophy in greater detail as well as relays stories of Taoist masters and disciples. The Chuang-tzu highlights techniques that focus on breathing, meditation, sexual activity, and diet. The Chuang-tzu is organized into three sections. It is not clear as to when this text was written however estimates are that it was written, sometime in the fourth century B.C.E.

    DAO Quote of the Moment
A state may be ruled by (measures of) correction; weapons of
war may be used with crafty dexterity; (but) the kingdom is made one's
own (only) by freedom from action and purpose.
How do I know that it is so? By these facts:In the kingdom the
multiplication of prohibitive enactments increases the poverty of the
people; the more implements to add to their profit that the people
have, the greater disorder is there in the state and clan; the more
acts of crafty dexterity that men possess, the more do strange
contrivances appear; the more display there is of legislation, the
more thieves and robbers there are.
Therefore a sage has said, 'I will do nothing (of purpose), and the people will be transformed of themselves; I will be fond of keeping still, and the people will of themselves become correct. I will take no trouble about it, and the people will of themselves become rich; I will manifest no ambition, and the people will of themselves attain to the primitive simplicity.'
