Present situation
December 2003
Dr. Marc Deru Summary In Tanzania, the population of the Kagera region, epicentre of AIDS 15 years ago, hasn't ceased growing since then, i.e., with a 53% increase between 1988 and 2002.
Partage Tanzania
While the experts, with their statistics, would have one believe that there exists an extremely serious HIV/AIDS epidemic, no trace of an epidemic is observable in the field. All that can be seen is a very poor, under-nourished population suffering from malaria, endemic immunodeficiency and common illnesses.
In order to provide effective help to Africa, the priority should be given to the eradication of the overly great poverty which exists there.
This past summer, I had the opportunity of spending two and a half months in the Kagera Region of Tanzania. Along with the Rakai district of Uganda, this region was considered, some 15 years ago, as the epicentre of AIDS in Africa. (See map I was based in town, in Bukoba, but often roamed about in the bush, visiting and sometimes lodging in the 21 villages of the rural district of Bukoba covered by the French NGO

A Brief Survey of the Traditional Forest Reserves of
Rungwe District, Mbeya Region, Tanzania
(Draft)
Abstract
Traditional methods of natural resource conservation have generally been ignored in most parts of the world, in favor of "top-down", government formulated rules and regulations. Over the past ten to fifteen years, however, there has been a growing awareness of the role that traditional resource management may play in helping to conserve natural resources, at least on a local level. Traditional Forest* Reserves (TFR) are one form of traditional resource conservation. During a brief survey carried out in Rungwe District, Mbeya Region, southwestern Tanzania during 1994, 94 TFR were identified. These reserves are used for a variety of purposes, though some may no longer be in active use. The Tanzanian government, either at the national or local level, may have a role to play in encouraging the continuation and preservation of TFR. *The term forest includes woodland and other similar vegetation formations. 1.0 INTRODUCTION

Mission work was begun in Tanzania by a number of European Lutheran groups, especially German and Swedish. Both World War I and World War II presented major crises for work in Tanzania. American Lutheran work began in 1922 when the Augustana Synod sent Ralph Hult to the former Tanganyika. During the next decades, many more Augustana missionaries arrived and served in central Tanganyika, in the area in and around Singida. During World War II, 172 German missionaries were interned. Their work in the northern part of the country around Arusha was taken over by Americans in a cooperative program coordinated by the National Lutheran Council. The cooperation between mission groups to respond to the needs of "orphaned missions" was a new dynamic in inter-Lutheran relationships, and was an important factor leading to the formation of the Lutheran World Federation in 1947. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanganyika was officially formed in 1963 by the merger of seven churches, each of which had been established by Lutheran mission work from Europe or the U.S.A. The new ELCT had 400,000 baptized members. The current Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania has over 2.5 million members and is one of the largest Lutheran churches in the world. It is led by a presiding bishop and twenty diocesan bishops.

BACKGROUND ON CHICHEWA AND RELATED LANGUAGES
Chichewa is a language of the Bantu language family, spoken in parts of East, Central, and Southern Africa. It is spoken in Malawi where, from 1968 until recently, it has served as the national language. It is also spoken in Mozambique, especially in the provinces of Tete and Niassa, in Zambia (especially in the Eastern Province), as well as in Zimbabwe where, according to some estimates, it ranks as the third most widely used local language, after Shona and Ndebele. The countries of Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique constitute the central location of Chichewa. Because of the national language policy adopted by the Malawi government, which promoted Chichewa through active educational programs, media usage and, other research activities carried out under the auspices of the Chichewa Board, out of a population of around 9 million, upwards of 65% have functional literacy or active command of this language. In Mozambique , the language goes by the name of Chinyanja, and it is native to 3.3% of a population numbering approximately 11.5 million . In Tete province it is spoken by 41.7% of a population of 777,426 and, it is the first language of 7.2% of the population of Niassa province, whose population totals 506,974 (see Firmino, 1995).
