Moreover, Tanzania has proved itself an active player in regional politics, having given consistent support to anti-colonial guerrilla movements in Southern Africa. It intervened militarily in Uganda in 1979, to overthrow the Amin regime. Relations with the post-apartheid government in South Africa have been good. Tanzania was a founder member of the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference and has been a prominent participant in the Organization of African Unity. In 1985, Nyerere retired as president of Tanzania and was replaced by Ali Hassan Mwinyi, former Vice-President and President of Zanzibar. Mwinyi favored introducing market forces into the economy and plurality into the political system. Economic reform proceeded slowly in the face of a large and fairly corrupt state bureaucracy. On the political front, amendments to the constitution allowing for the introduction of a multiparty system were endorsed by the National Assembly, early in 1992. Restrictions on opposition parties were not fully removed until the presidential election of October 1995, at which three candidates took on the CCM candidate, Benjamin Mkapa, who nonetheless won comfortably. However, there was major discontent in Zanzibar, where relations with the mainland were already strained over the conduct of the election.

This short paper examines the life and work of a single Tanzanian folk artist, Fundi Mdawalo bin Milonge (Fig. 1), who enjoyed a successful career as a sculptor of wood dolls for sale to Europeans and traditional regalia for Luguru men in Morogoro Town. (1) I seek to trace the origins of Fundi Mdawalo's art, how he developed his own style as an artist, and how he marketed his work. I also discuss the way that the occasional income Fundi Mdawalo earned from his craft enabled him to claim a degree of independence from wage labor and gave him both a sense of personal dignity and control over his own destiny. [FIGURE 1 OMITTED] Early on in this research program I was introduced to the work of Fundi Mdawalo bin Milonge. While visiting a friend one day who taught at the local Kilakala Girls Secondary School, I saw a charming, obviously modern wood carving of a man wearing a kofia (fez) and kanzu (a long-sleeved calico gown worn as an overgarment; Fig. 2). When I asked her where she bought it, she replied that the man who made it lived in the mountains above Morogoro and sometimes appeared in town to sell his pieces from door to door. My only clue to his identity was that she said he looked very much like his male figures.

Unit Four Regional Perspectives Module Nineteen: East Africa Teacher's Edition PURPOSE The purpose of Module Nineteen is to introduce students to the region called East Africa. East Africa is a vast area encompassing the countries of Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Seychelles, and Comoros. As with other regions of Africa (see Introduction to Module Twenty: Regional Perspectives ), the countries that are included in East Africa can vary somewhat depending on whom you talk to. Some of the countries listed here can also fit into the regions of Central, Southern, or Northern Africa. But for the sake of this module, we will refer to East Africa as the twelve countries listed above. Activity One: The Region Called East Africa gives a brief overview of the history of the region, highlighting human origins, early kingdoms, trade routes, European colonialism, and postcolonial states. In this activity, students should get a sense of the rich history of this region and its connectedness to other regions in Africa and the rest of the world. The activity ends by discussing intra-regional political and economic organizations in East Africa, giving COMESA as one example. Activity Two: The Geography of East Africa deals with some of the geographical differences between East African subregions.
