    Tanzania's Geography
    Carves a Path Through Time
East Africa's largest nation, United Republic of Tanzania, is reknown for numerous natural and human wonders including Mt. Kilimanjaro, the island of Zanzibar, the Serengeti Plain, Mikumi National Park, Lake Victoria, the Great Ruaha Rift, the Masai and Hehe tribes and perhaps the best safari areas on Earth. Tanzania shares its borders with, Burundi, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
At 939,652 square kilometers or 362,706 square miles, the country c onsists of the mainland plus the major islands of Zanzibar, Poem and Mafia.
The coast is protected by a large coral reef. An expansive central plateau with grasslands and mountain ranges fills the country's interior, with Mt Kilimanjaro in the north (the highest mountain in Africa) rising to 5,895 meters, or 19,340 feet. The Great Rift Valley runs through the center of the country and contains many lakes. In the north the country borders Lake Victoria and in the west Lake Tanganyika. To see a map of Tanzania, click here Olduvai Gorge , a 30- mile-long gash in Tanzania's Serengeti Plain, is reknown for the remains of the earliest humans to exist. Between 1.9 and 1.2 million years ago a salt lake occupied this area. From 1.2 million to 600,000 years ago fresh water streams and small ponds appeared.Exposed deposits show rich fossil fauna, many hominid remains and items belonging to the one of the oldest stone tool technologies, called Olduwan. The time span of the objects recovered date from 2,100,000 to 15,000 years ago.
