The histories of the two areas are quite different. When dividing the area up among themselves in the late 1800s, the Germans and the British ignored the claims to parts of Tanganyika by the sultan of Zanzibar. The start of World War I disrupted the great plans Germany had for its part of East Africa, and the British eventually took control of the area.

CULTURE-TANZANIA: Activists Challenge Gender Inequality As Women Marry Women Inter Press Service - July 15, 2003
Ananilea Nkya DAR ES SALAAM, Jul 15 (IPS) - - Tanzania still has a long way to go in achieving gender equality and cultures in some communities continue to force women to "marry" another woman in order to bear a son for inheritance purposes. This culture exists among the Kurya tribe in the country's North Western region of Mara bordering Kenya . In this tribe an elderly woman without children will pay a bride price to the parents of a girl in order for a "marriage" to take place between them. Under this kind of "marriage" arrangement commonly known as "nyumba ntobo"the girl is then said to be an "mkamwana", meaning daughter in law, of the sonless women. After a "nyumba ntobo" marriage has taken place, the elder woman allocates a man, usually from her clan, to the "bride" and children born of this relationship will belong to her. The children are referred to as the "grand children" of the elderly women and it is believed that "nyumba ntobo" marriage brings social security to the elderly women in patriarchal Wakurya society. Charles Nyamasiriri, 28, from the Nyabakari village in Musoma rural district in the Mara region says he witnessed five "nyumba ntobo marriage" in the village in 1997 before he moved to Musoma town where he is currently working.

CULTURE-TANZANIA: Breaking the Culture of Silence Inter Press Service - July 25, 2003
Ananilea Nkya DAR ES SALAAM, Jul 25 (IPS) - Antonia Kilegu, 30, looks like a healthy young woman. But when she told a press conference in the Tanzanian commercial city of Dar Es Salaam that she was living positively with the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS many people, including her own relatives, were horrified. She was quickly branded as an uncultured young women wanting to solicit funds by any means. "My daughter I saw you on the television saying you are HIV positive. Oh! You have become such a bad woman to the extent of pretending that you are suffering from such a dangerous disease -AIDS? How dare you young girl, are you cursed? Can a person with AIDS look like you?" her confused and angry stepfather, Bahatia Mikaeli, asked her. Mikaeli is a Roman Catholic Church Community chairperson in the Mgeta village in the central region of Morogoro. However Antonio says her step father's disbelieving attitude towards her changed after Antonia's ex husband died few months later and one of her two children tested positive for the virus. Antonia's step father was not the only one appalled by Antonia's public testimony. AIDS is not openly discussed in this East African country of over 34 million people where the first AIDS case was discovered 20 years ago but communities still call it "Slims".

Anitta Juntunen, PhD Kajaani Polytechnic The aim of this ethnographic study is to describe baridi, a culture-bound syndrome of the Bena peoples in the village of Ilembula, Tanzania. The data were collected through open-ended interviews (n = 49), observation and personal field diary, and analyzed by qualitative content analysis. The findings showed that baridi, emotional coldness, was a slowly progressing condition. It started with mild symptoms, such as feeling cold, tired and

Postcard from Tanzania A Masai house in construction on the Serengeti Plain. Photo: Rob Busby Dear ArchitectureWeek, While traveling on the Serengeti Plain in Tanzania we visited a Masai village. The village is built in a circle with a large wall around it and several entrances. Every night the Masai bring all their cattle into the center of the village and close up the entrances to protect them from lions and other predators. The houses are built by the women of the tribe. They cut down trees that are found in groves scattered throughout the Serengeti. They shape their houses by weaving smaller branches between wood supports stuck into the ground. The women collect cow dung and use it as the surface material for the walls. This practice also serves to clean up the central area of the village. They use grasses and dung for the roof. The smell definitely takes some getting used to! The dwellings are built without a chimney for the kitchen fire. They must depend on the leaks in the walls for cross-ventilation. When a man gets married, his wife builds a home for them in his area of the village. When he marries again (he can have up to four wives), the next wife builds her home to the left of the first one. The next wife would then build her home to the right of the first one, and so forth.

Cultural visits in Kenya and Tanzania
Where? All parts of Kenya and Tanzania Best time: Any time Kenya and Tanzania offer an unrivalled opportunity to meet some of Africa's various cultures. East Africa offers every type of terrain, including deserts, semi-deserts, forests, mountains, lakes, open plains and tropical coasts. This incredible variety has allowed a huge diversity of wildlife to flourish, making the area famous for its animal safaris. This diversity has also helped tribal cultures flourish, from the coastal Swahili people who are a mixture of Arabic, Bantu and Indonesian, to the Nilotic tribes, the most famous of whom are the Masai, and the full Bantu tribes such as the Kikuyu, Kamba and Abaluhya. Language was the main difference between these groups.

    Tanzania Trip - Cultural Tours
    By Jeremy Jowell
For the average tourist, a visit to Tanzania usually involves jetting in for a whistle-stop safari then zipping off to Zanzibar for a few days. But there's more to Tanzania than that. With a cultural tours programme in place, travellers now have no excuse if they don't get to meet the local people and experience the real Africa. Jeremy Jowell went off to explore...
The Maasai clan of Mkuru lead a very isolated life. Pelo, the 68-year-old chief, and his family have never travelled far from their home in the foothills of Mount Meru. To them, northern Tanzania is the world. Their only contact with others is a weekly visit to the big market and meeting the occasional traveller who journeys to Mkuru for a camel safari. Since camels were introduced to Tanzania in the early nineties, the Maasai have come to appreciate these animals in the dry semi arid plains between Mount Kilimanjaro and Lake Natron.
