      Trip Itinerary
ANTICIPATED ITINERARY, ACTUAL ROUTE MAY VARY
Day 1 Nairobi / Arusha - Zanzibar Transfer to the airport in Nairobi or Arusha (Kilimanjaro airport) for your flight to Zanzibar Island. Clear local customs in Zanzibar and meet your guide just outside of the luggage claim area. It will probably be hotter here than where you have come from. Look for a signboard with your last name on it. Overnight at the Tembo House in Stone Town or on the coast at the Matemwe Bungalows or the Breezes Beach Club.
Day 2 - 3 Zanzibar During your stay you can choose to do optional, extra cost tours which will enhance your experience on the island. These tours always include an expert guide, safe, high-quality vehicle transportation and pick up and drop off at your hotel. Guides are fluent English speaking Zanzibaris who are able to provide extensive historical and general interest background information about their home island. We have had lots of feedback from clients praising these guides as among the most professional and knowledgeable guides they have ever had.

Diverse Tribal Cultures
With over 120 tribes, Tanzania is one of the most culturally diverse countries in all of Africa. From the tall graceful Maasai warriors, to the ancient ways of the Hadza bushmen, to the resourceful agricultural practices of the Wameru, visitors to Tanzania will be impressed by the fascinating array of tribal cultures. While the main focus on a safari is usually the African wildlife, we think it is also important to introduce our guests to our Tanzanian friends. Our roots are in Tanzania. We have long-standing relationships with tribal elders in many villages throughout Tanzania. Our guides and employees have friends and family all over the country and anywhere you travel with Thomson Safaris you will receive a warm welcome from the local people. It is just one of the many benefits of traveling with a company so well established and respected in Tanzania.
"If the animals were majestic, the people were magnificent. We were wrapped in their warmth, delighted in their happy humor and overwhelmed by their desire to make every moment of our trip perfect. A world could learn about graciousness from these men and women."

    Sukuma Culture and Tanzania
by Mark H.C. Bessire T he Sukuma culture is the largest in Tanzania. In many ways, the Sukuma are experiencing a renewed interest in traditional culture. Some think that the strength of this movement is found in the reconciliation of the modern and traditional. Cultural traditions appear to be spreading through contemporary means and not as a contest between the old and the new. Sukuma traditional arts and culture are thriving as much as the economic growth in the region. T anzania has accelerated its movement toward democracy, increased its communication networks, and opened its economy to the world. This has influenced the traditional culture of the Sukuma. While many Sukuma remain in small villages, others move to cities and assimilate to the urban society which is a combination of many different cultures and international influences. Possibly to renew awareness in Sukuma culture, identity and history, some people provide cultural leadership through a mix of traditional and modern culture. This movement reflects an increased interest in utamuduni or traditional culture, which lies in the dynamic social and political changes that are currently spreading through Usukuma. Today, a revival of Sukuma culture is taking place among traditional doctors, chiefs, artists, and dancers. A s the Tanzanian government has shifted from state controlled socialism to capitalism, it has created a more mobile work force and a diversification of employment opportunities. Many Sukuma are still farmers, merchants, builders and traditional doctors; but, in today's economy, there are also working in the communications, health, shipping, transportation, mining and banking sectors. Mwanza, the city center of Usukuma, is one of the largest and fastest growing urban areas in Tanzania. While most of Usukuma is rural and many live in the countryside, people throughout the country and central Africa are flocking to Mwanza to find work in one of the many emerging economic industries.

for a newsletter (PDF) Greetings from London, Ontario! For the past 6 weeks, I had the privilege of serving our Lord Jesus Christ in Tanzania, East Africa. In one short sentence, God truly exalted himself through me, the team and Tanzanians. As this was my first overseas mission trip, my eyes opened up and my love for Him and others grew as a result of this trip. This report will hopefully capture some of the experiences I have gone through, as well as the fruits that our Lord has shown us in Tanzania during our short time there. Thirty-nine students and staff across Canada took part in this trip. Honestly, this team was hand-picked by God. Every single one of the members took part in serving God according to the gifts He has given us. We got along very well, and by the end we have developed friendships with God as our foundation, along with memories and experiences we had together. Schedule Organization Our schedule was organized and rigid. Our orientation to the culture, the location and training took place during the first week. Then for the next three weeks, we worked on the campus of University of Dar Es Salaam, doing door-to-door evangelism and discipleship. After a short rest and relaxation, our large group divided into 7 groups, going to many parts of Tanzania and East Africa, showing Jesus film. Before leaving Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, we had our debrief for 3 days focusing back on our campuses and culturally adjusting back to Canadian lifestyle.

    Tanzania's Culture
The storytelling tradition has thrived for generations because of the absence of printed material. Folk tales prepare young people for life, as there are many lessons to be learned from the tales. Tanzania has a very rich, diverse, and sophisticated folklore. Each ethnic group has a store of myths, legends, folk tales, riddles, proverbs, and sayings that embody culture and tradition and are an important element in Tanzanian cultural heritage.
Storytelling is tremendously important in African societies, serving a far more diverse purpose than simply entertainment. Teaching lessons of religion, morals, history, roles, and societal codes, the practice builds strong bonds and commonality among generations.
    Traditions Remain Strong
Despite increasing foreign contact, Tanzania has persistently maintained its cultural heritage. Ancient rituals and customs are still observed by many tribes and daily life largely follows traditional practices. Life's most important events, birth, puberty, marriage, and death, are all celebrated through age-old traditional ceremonies. In marriage, for example, the custom of giving dowry's is still respected. The aspiring groom still acquires his bride by giving cows, goats, local brew, hoes or machetes to his delighted father-in-law. Yet, the practice of arranged marriages is gradually disappearing in many places, particularly the towns and cities. Here the younger generation is often free to marry for love alone. Today it is no longer strange for a Nilotic Luo from the shores of Lake Victoria to meet and marry a Bantu Ngoni from Lake Nyasa, even though traditional procedures will be adhered to on both sides. And, once married, old customs prevail.
