Any teacher licensed in an instructional area before August 31, 1995 will continue to have the same general authority to teach in programs for the talented and gifted as is currently vested in the license.. For example, an elementary teacher licensed in 1990 will continue to be eligible to teach elementary gifted and talented classes.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and talented adolescents: FEELING BOYS AND THINKING GIRLS: TALENTED ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR TEACHERS Jane Piirto, Ph.D. (ENTP) Trustees' Professor Director of Talent Development Education Ashland University Ashland, OH 44805 This article appeared in the Proceedings of the CAPT conference in Orlando, Florida in March 1998 ABSTRACT The MBTI was administered to 226 tenth and eleventh graders who qualified as gifted and talented. Sixty teachers of the talented and 25 elementary and high school teachers were also administered the MBTI. Talented teens preferred ENFP. Gender differences were calculated as well among artistic youth and academically talented youth. Male artistic youth preferred F and academic females preferred T. Teachers of the talented preferred ENFJ. Other teachers preferred ESFJ. Implications for teaching these students are discussed. FEELING BOYS AND THINKING GIRLS: TALENTED ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR TEACHER S The ESFJ teachers are exceptionally dependable, precise, critical of detail, hardworking, and expects others to be likewise. They have a deep respect for facts, and are particular about detail and routines. These educators are friendly, tactful, sympathetic, and need human contacts. They also show a great deal of loyalty to respected persons, institutions, and causes. Their foremost interest is in the direct and visible effects that situations have on peoples' lives. This research project was designed to explore the relationship between the intuitive (N) preference versus the sensing (S) preference and the judging (J) preference versus the perceiving (P) preference on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) taken by talented students and their teachers.

Important New Information
On July 22, 2005, the Board of Regents adopted an amendment to Commissioner's Regulations that includes the following changes in the certification requirements.
  • Increases the education requirements for the gifted education extension of a teaching certificate to 12 semester hours in gifted education (previously 6 semester hours). This requirement better aligns with the competencies tested for in the New York State Teacher Certification Examination (NYSTCE) test.
Defers until September 1, 2006 the implementation of the requirement that a teacher must hold a gifted education extension or have obtained from the State Education Department a Statement of Continuing Eligibility (SOCE).
  • PLEASE NOTE: This is a brief summary only; it is not an exhaustive description of the amendment. For more detailed information, see the Chart of Recent Certification Changes. Walt Johnson teaches Ocean Aquarium, a summer school class for gifted students, at Maple Grove Junior High. (MPR Photo/Tim Pugmire) Public schools in Minnesota are getting a long-awaited boost in state funding to better serve exceptionally bright students. Lawmakers earmarked $11 million in this year's education funding bill to help school districts identify gifted and talented students, and provide them with academic challenges. With most of the focus these days on students who've fallen behind, educators say the money will benefit an often overlooked group of kids.
This gifted and talented program serves students in first through ninth grades. Julie Ann Queensen will be a seventh grader this fall at North Junior High School in Hopkins. She enrolled in a class at Maple Grive Junior High called Ocean Aquarium.

    • Acceleration : Educational acceleration is one of the cornerstones of exemplary gifted education practices, with more research supporting this intervention than any other in the literature on gifted individuals. Gifted readers and reading instruction Basic educatioinal options for gifted student in schools : There is a wide variety of ways that educators can assist in the talent development process of advanced learners. Yet every school needs to have basic provisions in place to assure the educational development of these students in the domains of learning for which the school has responsibility.

Q: I'm already certified to teach; why do I need a separate endorsement to work with gifted students? A: Certification reflects the license issued by the state allowing graduates to teach. The type of certification defines the kind of responsibility the teacher can have in the classroom. Endorsements identify what an individual can teach as well as the grade level(s). In 1992, the State of Iowa approved the requirements for a pre-K through 12 Talented and Gifted (TAG) Endorsement for anyone designated as a teacher and/or coordinator of programs for the gifted. The TAG Endorsement allows teachers to work with gifted students of any age even if their certification is for a specific age group. The TAG Endorsement provides educators with the essential tools to promote the talents and well-being of gifted students. Research has shown that outstanding teachers of the gifted are familiar with different learning styles, understand the developmental nature and needs of gifted children, and understand current theory and knowledge about gifted education
