Servicing your gifted child: an interview with Karen Rogers on her book, "Re-forming Gifted Education"
What goes into the plan?
How do gifted children differ, and how should those differences be addressed in the plan?
What forms does acceleration take? What types of children are best suited from these different forms?
Based on your extensive research, which types of program models have been shown to be effective with gifted children?
Among the grouping models, full-time placement with other gifted or talented children (special schools or self-contained gifted classrooms), cluster grouping, and regrouping for instruction in a specific subject area with concomitant accelerated and differentiated curriculum are the most efficacious. Powerful social and emotional effects as well as academic gains have been found among accelerative options such as grade skipping and mentorships. All of our program models in gifted education have the potential to aid in the instructional and curricular modification required for children with gifts and talents, but in order for them to be effective, the organizational strategy cannot be a sporadic or even a weekly program. The effectiveness of these models requires that gifted children access challenging and rigorous curriculum in their area or areas of talent on a direct and daily basis.

GT-Placement (updated August 1998) My child has just been identified as "gifted and talented." How do we decide whether to enroll her in the gifted program? How do we decide about acceleration? I am concerned that my child will be separated from friends and classmates and may be teased by other children. I am also concerned that my child will feel pressured by the work, to a point that she dislikes school. Also my child does not want to leave her current school, and does not want to be classified any differently than her friends. Please help me with the pros and cons of these issues, and any other guidance you can offer. Choosing educational options for children is a complex process, but here are some ideas to consider: The decision to enroll a child in a gifted program is not irreversible. If the placement doesn't work out, the child can always go back to the regular education classroom. The reverse is rarely true. If you opt to keep your child in the regular education classroom, and your child quickly becomes bored, transferring to the gifted classroom during the same school year may not be possible. Research indicates the following:
  • Gifted students benefit from learning together and should be placed with similar students in their areas of strength.

In the Identification of Gifted Learners
A Symposium for the World Council for Gifted Children
All of the major IQ tests used to select gifted students have been completely reformulated in the last two years. The scores they generate are not comparable to scores derived from previous versions. Therefore, it is essential for all personnel who rely on intelligence tests to understand how to interpret information from these new instruments. We are currently in a transition phase, using a whole new series of tests and trying to find what works, and which segments to use to satisfy a range of needs. There have been both improvements and losses for gifted students. Test ceilings have been extended, which enables gifted learners to demonstrate more of their knowledge, but scoring protocols do not reflect this higher performance. The new tests provide better assessments of visual-spatial abilities; however, the increased emphasis on processing skills lowers scores. The new General Ability Index (GAI) of the WISC-IV generates a reasoning score for gifted children, especially those with learning disabilities, that is not depressed by working memory and processing speed. The GAI is in wide use in the United States, but is not yet known in other countries.
