Q: I'm already certified to teach; why do I need a separate endorsement to work with gifted students? A: Certification reflects the license issued by the state allowing graduates to teach. The type of certification defines the kind of responsibility the teacher can have in the classroom. Endorsements identify what an individual can teach as well as the grade level(s). In 1992, the State of Iowa approved the requirements for a pre-K through 12 Talented and Gifted (TAG) Endorsement for anyone designated as a teacher and/or coordinator of programs for the gifted. The TAG Endorsement allows teachers to work with gifted students of any age even if their certification is for a specific age group. The TAG Endorsement provides educators with the essential tools to promote the talents and well-being of gifted students. Research has shown that outstanding teachers of the gifted are familiar with different learning styles, understand the developmental nature and needs of gifted children, and understand current theory and knowledge about gifted education

Members include families of gifted or talented children, people in all branches of education, people in allied fields and people with specialised interests such as music, art, mathematics, etc. (Since the Association is for adults interested in the welfare of gifted children, membership is not open to gifted children themselves, but is for parents and other adults interested in this area.) Does your child need to be tested for you to join? No. The Association wishes to encourage all children to develop fully. Any child who wishes to join in the activities is welcome, as are brothers and sisters. Experience shows that the children soon work out for themselves which of the activities suit them.

77. Satori Summer Camp For Gifted Teens
A summer experience for academically talented and gifted junior and senior high school students. Takes place at Eastern Washington University.
http://www.satoricamp.org/main.html
Literally, the word Satori is Japanese for "Ah Ha!" It originally represented a state of enlightenment sought in Zen Buddhism. It's an exploration of the mind and the unknown. It's the insight you achieve only after expending a good deal of your energy and imagination. Satori is the sense of joy that comes form learning. For students aged 12 - 18, the word Satori is also the name of a one-week journey towards their own personal enlightenment through specialized instruction and social activities. For its twenty-second straight summer Satori Camp is proud to present this opportunity for academically and intellectually talented students to experience their first taste of college with others who share their enthusiasm for learning in an academic and social environment. Satori camp allows students to choose three mini-courses from a variety of offerings . Participants are introduced to a wide range of academic and special interest courses designed to develop a well-rounded individual. Each course is held for approximately two hours a day over the five days of camp. This continuity allows for in-depth exploration of subject material, active inquiry and discussion, and hands-on participation by students.
