Poetry history
The Tajik-Persian poetry, prose, manuscript, miniature has developed during many centuries. The most famous period of its growth is the time of feudal society formation, to which there preceded the gains of Iran and Central Asia by arabs and the subsequent islamisation of these people. This ideological base was unified for a number of territories and people, that caused a generality of culture development as a whole. At the end of 10th century, Firdowsi creates his famous heroic epopee "Shakhname", outweighing all existed works. 11th century was marked by creation of such genre as romantic epos. There appears a number of poems written by Unsuri, Ayoki, Gunguri in this style, but the wreath of beauty became "Khamsa"( ) of Nizami composed by him in the 12th century. In 13th century there appears "Bustan" and "Gulistan" of Saadi, in 14th century the works of continuers of romantic epos - Amir Khusravi Dekhlavi and Khadju Kirmani, Kamol Khujandi and the master of gazelle - Hofiz. The 15th century is Jami poetry, that has covered by stylistics all genres of preceded literature. The Persian-tajik literature developed in a vast territory, distributing due to wanderings of poets, scientists, travelers, merchants and sending of illustrated miniature manuscripts.

Tajikistan Culture Back to Top As they did during the Soviet era, educated Tajiks define their cultural heritage broadly, laying claim to the valuable legacy of the supraethnic culture of Central Asia and other parts of the Islamic world from the eastern Mediterranean to India. Soviet rule institutionalized Western art forms, publishing, and mass media, some elements of which consequently attracted spontaneous support in the republic. since the beginning of Soviet rule in the 1920s, the media and the arts always have been subject to political constraints.

Tajikistan Culture The most revered figures from Tajikistan's Persian past are the 10th century philosopher-scientist Abu Ali ibn Sina, author of two of the most important books in the history of medicine, and the poet Rudaki, court poet in Bukhara in the time of the Samanids. Tajiks also venerate Firdausi, a poet and composer of the Shah-nameh (Book of Kings), the Persian national epic, and Omar Khayyam, of Rubaiyat fame, both born in present-day Iran but at a time when it was in the same empire as Tajikistan. When Tajikistan was hived off from Uzbekistan in 1929, the new nation-state was forced to leave behind its cultural baggage. The new Soviet order set about providing a replacement pantheon of arts, introducing modern drama, opera and ballet. The policy paid early dividends and the 1940s are considered a golden era of Tajik theatre. A kind of Soviet fame came to some Tajik novelists and poets, such as Mirzo Tursunzade and Sadriddin Ayni, the latter now remembered more as a deconstructor of national culture because of his campaign to eliminate all Arabic expressions and references to Islam from the Tajik tongue. Since independence there has been something of a cultural revival in an attempt to foster a sense of national identity. The succuss of Tajikistan's most popular living writer, Taimur Zulfikarov, is attributed to his abiity to mimic the ancient Persian style of writing and, in doing so, to appeal to nationalist sentiments.

The country has experienced three changes in government and a five-year civil war since it gained independence in 1991. A peace agreement among rival factions was signed in 1997, and implemented in 2000. Although open skirmishes in the streets are less of a problem, economic development is an urgent priority to keep the country from sliding back into chaos. Although 80% of its population lives in abject poverty, there remains a trading, merchant and entrepreneurial culture in Tajikistan that survived decades of Soviet domination. Microfinance is an important means to leverage the potential of that culture. In one year of operation in Tajikistan, FINCA has found that its core product offering, village banking group loans targeted at women, holds strong potential. The program is on a steady growth trajectory and enjoyed perfect, 100% on-time repayment during fiscal year 2004.

This demands the question: "What is to be done?" Posted by: Jaybird February 26, 2005 02:07 PM This is the worst thing in the world, has been and always will be. Worse than war, genocide, slavery, economic inrquality. This sustained constant religious and culturally based oppression of the majority of the world's population is a crime deserving of the ultimate punishment. Were I able, I just might eliminate the lesser half of the human race, knowing I would go with them. For our modern enlightened society is only marginally better. Y'all want me to give an inch on abortion, move the power a little from each individuals woman's hand to her society, her gov't, to men with power over her. Fuck you. Right to choose.

Grant to Fund Photo Exhibit Featuring Islamic Shrines
EWING, NJ …History professor at The College of New Jersey Jo-Ann Gross has been awarded a $10,000 project development grant from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation in Tajikistan to fund her photographic project on Islamic shrines in Tajikistan The grant will be used help spread her message through the exhibition of 60 photographs of the shrines of Tajikistan accompanied by historical text posters. Through this display Gross hopes “to bring visual expression to an important and dynamic aspect of Tajik culture and provide a link between local culture, social development and historical memory, past and present.” The exhibition opens at the National Museum in Dushanbe in early July. In the following three months the exhibition will travel to 11 towns in the Zerafshon Valley, Badakhshan and Kulob regions. The project will also produce a 2006 calendar poster to be distributed across the country and will ultimately culminate in the publication of a book on the Islamic shrines of Tajikistan.

Anthropological Research in Tajikistan by William O. Beeman (Brown U) Note: I have been working sporadically in Tajikistan for the past few years as a consultant to the Aga Khan Humanities Project on higher-education reform in Dushanbeh. This is run by Harvard trained anthropologist Rafique Keshavjee (email: akhum@ATGE.AUTOMAIL.COM ). I am providing some background on the current situation in Tajikistan and prospects for future research for our membership. Tajikistan's Current Situation The Republic of Tajikistan is the smallest and most isolated of the new nations of former Soviet Central Asia. With a population of around 6 million, and virtually no arable land, it is also the poorest of the new Republics. Though possessing beautiful mountain landscape, the country is devoid of virtually all natural resources save hydroelectric power. Tajiks predictably have a very difficult economic future. The ethnic composition of Tajikistan is approximately 55% Tajik, 23% Uzbek, 10% Ethnic Russian and 2% Other. Tajiks also live in neighboring nations, notably Uzbekistan in the largely Tajik cities of Samarkand and Bukhara and the areas surrounding them. The most notable fact about the ethnic composition of the nation is that its population is virtually an island of Aryans in a sea of Turks. The nation thus has a greater cultural affinity with its Afghan and Pakistani neighbors to the south and with its Iranian neighbors to the west than with its immediate neighbors in the former Soviet Union.
