Among the various tribes around the world, the range of distribution of the Austronesians is the second only to Indo-European tribes. The distance they cover from the east to the west is over half of the earth's circumference, covering from the Easter Island in the western shore of South America in the east, from the Madagascar in the eastern Africa in the west, from the southern area of New Zealand in the south, and the northern shore of Taiwan in the north. According to the Australian archeologist, Mr. Peter Bellwood's research, it shows that the Austronesian languages of Taiwan's aborigine peoples contain many ancient language elements, Taiwan is viewed as the homeland of Austronesian languages and possibly even the place where the Austronesian people originated. The third "Festival of Austronesian Cultures in Taitung", designated as one the Twelve Major Local Festivals in Taiwan, is held at the National Museum of Prehistory in Taitung. Attractions include the Exhibition of Austronesian Musical Instruments, Tribal Experience Camp, Flotsam Creation of Installation Art, and Ceramic Creations

Jiang has urged the need to resume talks with Taiwan Story Tools
SPECIAL REPORTS: CHINA Asia's troubled waters
BEIJING, China Chinese Communist Party chief Jiang Zemin has upheld Beijing's right to use force against Taiwan. "Our position of never undertaking to renounce the use of force is not directed at our Taiwan compatriots. It is aimed at the foreign forces' attempts to interfere in China's reunification and the Taiwan separatist forces' schemes for 'Taiwan independence'," Jiang said. Despite the strong rhetoric against the island still recognized as a nation by 27 countries, Jiang stressed dialogue remained the key. "On the basis of the one-China principle, let us shelve for now certain political disputes and resume the cross-strait dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible," Jiang said in the text of a major speech to be delivered to a Communist Party Congress. Taiwan has been under self rule since 1949, when the Nationalist army led by Chiang Kai-shek fled there to escape Mao Zedong's Communist forces, which seized control of mainland China.

Dreams of glory reaches far beyond the dusty fields in Taiwan
Taiwan won the 34th Baseball World Cup bronze medal last November From Mike Chinoy CNN Senior Asia Correspondent TABALANG, Taiwan (CNN) Just as basketball has for years provided a way out of inner city poverty in the United States, in Taiwan baseball has offered similar opportunities to an aboriginal population long treated as second-class citizens. Taiwan's indigenous people who settled the island thousands of years before mainland Chinese but now just a small minority have been known for a colorful and traditional tribal dance handed down from their ancestors. But their prowess on the baseball field is changing the way they are treated. Their hero is Chen Chin-fong, a 24-year-old aborigine who powered Taiwan to its first ever medal at baseball's World Cup competition in Taipei last fall. After being recruited by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chen is widely expected to become the first Taiwanese to play in the American major leagues.

More bodies found from Taiwan jet crash
Rescue workers continue to recover the remains of victims Staff and wires TAIPEI, Taiwan Officials in Taiwan investigating last weekend's crash of a China Airlines jumbo jet say they have recovered more bodies from the doomed aircraft and possibly located the plane's nose section. With improving weather Saturday six search ships have begun operations in the crash area to recover the aircraft's flight data and voice recorders, believed to be about 67 meters (220 feet) under water. Until now choppy seas and poor visibility have delayed search and recovery operations in the large area of the Taiwan Straits where the plane came down. China Airlines flight CI611 broke up in midair shortly after take-off from Taipei killing all 225 passengers and crew on board. So far only 101 bodies and less than one percent of the aircraft's fuselage have been recovered leaving investigators still puzzled over the cause of the crash.

Modern-day Taiwan RELATED VIDEO
Windows Media
October 12, 1998
Web posted at: 1:56 p.m. EDT (1756 GMT) TAIPEI, Taiwan (CNN) The Communist government in mainland China considers Taiwan a renegade province, and has made no bones about the fact that it wants the island to be re-incorporated. But, although Taiwan and China share a cultural heritage, modern-day Taiwan has a political, social and economic identity noticeably different from what can be found in mainland China. CNN's Mike Chinoy reports on how some Taiwan residents feel about their giant neighbor.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) Under U.S. pressure, Taiwan's leader toned down the language of a March 20 referendum on how the island should deal with the threat of hundreds of Chinese missiles pointed at the island. President Chen Shui-bian had pushed for a strongly worded, China-bashing vote demanding the communist giant withdraw nearly 500 missiles aimed at Taiwan. U.S. officials had criticized Chen's plans as unnecessary and potentially provocative. When Chen officially announced the ballot language Friday, however, he significantly softened its tone, making it more of a policy vote than a protest directed at China. In a televised address, Chen said the referendum would have two parts. The first would ask voters whether Taiwan should purchase more advanced anti-missile weapons if China doesn't redeploy its missiles and renounce the use of force against Taiwan.

Surprises in Taiwan's mayoral race
By Willy Wo-Lap Lam
CNN Senior China Analyst
Campaigning for Saturday's polls has heated up Story Tools
RELATED Taiwan Strait: Asia's troubled waters
HONG KONG, China (CNN) Surprising developments in the mayoral race in the southern Taiwan metropolis of Kaohsiung could hurt the chances of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) hanging on to power beyond 2004. Polls are scheduled for Saturday to elect the mayors of Taipei and Kaohsiung. Until about a month ago, the incumbent Mayor of Kaohsiung, Frank Hsieh, looked like a shoo-in because the city was a stronghold of pro-independence sentiments in the self-ruled island. Hsieh, an eloquent lawyer and former DPP chairman, was leading the Kuomintang (KMT) candidate, former vice-mayor Huang Jun-ying, by more than ten percentage points in opinion polls. Huang's chances were low because the anti-DPP votes could also go to candidates backed by the other mayor opposition party, the People's First Party (PFP), as well as two colorful independent candidates.

Tokyo stays weak; HK, Taiwan up
Tech stocks were mostly weaker Wednesday on U.S. profit declines TOKYO, Japan Tokyo stocks fell by midday Wednesday, led down by sharp profit declines among U.S. and Japanese technology firms, including TDK Corp. Traders said results from Cisco and TDK dented already shaky investor confidence in the sector. The benchmark Nikkei 225 average ended the morning down 52.77 points, or 0.43 percent, at 12,266.69, while the broader TOPIX index fell 2.44 points, or 0.20 percent, to 1,221.94. Elsewhere in the region, markets in Australia, Korea and New Zealand were slightly weaker at midday.
Some pockets of good news
But there were pockets of good news. Taiwan's Taiex picked up some ground and was up 78.07 points or 1.76 percent to 4482.07. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was up about 60 points of 0.4 percent to 12,607 by late morning. In Tokyo, electronic parts maker TDK Corp said on Tuesday its group operating profit for the April-June quarter fell 86.5 percent from a year earlier to about $21 million (2.59 billion yen) because of a high-tech slump, and prospects were poor.
