1400 to 1700 European Colonization 1700 to 1895: "Every three years an uprising..."
During the next two hundred years, Chinese rule of Taiwan was marginal. Taiwan continued to run its own affairs and only minimal numbers of Chinese officials "governed" the island. During the course of time there were numerous rebellions against the corrupt Chinese officials leading to the statement "every three years and uprising, every five years a rebellion." China gave Taiwan provincial status in 1887. Only eight years later, in 1895, as a consequence of its defeat in the Sino-Japanese War, China ceded Taiwan to Japan "in perpetuity" as outlined in the Treaty of Shimonoseki. China was more than willing to give up Taiwan and some officials expressed relief at no longer having to police the "land of the brown robbers."
1895 to 1945: Japanese Colonization Taiwanese opponents to Japanese rule proclaimed the "Republic of Formosa" in May of 1895. But the Japanese military quickly overpowered the movement. The roots of independence were planted and talk of independence was secretly carried out by the Taiwanese political and intellectual elite. During the Japanese colonization, tremendous economic progress was made as Taiwan underwent rapid industrialization to feed the Japanese war machine.

Taiwan's aboriginal peoples, who originated in Austronesia and southern China, have lived on Taiwan for 12,000 to 15,000 years. Significant migration to Taiwan from the Chinese mainland began as early as A.D. 500. Dutch traders first claimed the island in 1624 as a base for Dutch commerce with Japan and the China coast. Two years later, the Spanish established a settlement on the northwest coast of Taiwan which they occupied until 1642 when they were driven out by the Dutch. Dutch colonists administered the island and its predominantly aboriginal population until 1661. The first major influx of migrants from the Chinese mainland came during the Dutch period, sparked by the political and economic chaos on the China coast during the Manchu invasion and the end of the Ming Dynasty. In 1664, a Chinese fleet led by the Ming loyalist Cheng Ch'eng-kung (Zheng Chenggong, known in the West as Koxinga) retreated from the mainland and occupied Taiwan. Cheng expelled the Dutch and established Taiwan as a base in his attempt to restore the Ming Dynasty. He died shortly thereafter, and in 1683 his successors submitted to Manchu (Qing Dynasty) control. From 1680 the Qing Dynasty ruled Taiwan as a prefecture and in 1875 divided the island into two prefectures, north and south. In 1887 the island was made into a separate Chinese province. During the 18th and 19th centuries, migration from Fujian and Guangdong provinces steadily increased, and Chinese supplanted aborigines as the dominant population group. In 1895, a weakened Imperial China ceded Taiwan to Japan in the Treaty of Shimonoseki following the first Sino-Japanese war.

Center for Taiwan International Relations
Welcome to CTIR
The Center for Taiwan International Relations (CTIR) is a private, non-profit, non-partisan research organization established in Washington, D.C. in 1988. CTIR has always maintained that the sovereignty of Taiwan (including the Pescadores) belongs to 21 million people of Taiwan, and to no one else. Thus, it supports the right of those people to decide the ultimate resolution of the "Taiwan Question." No government constituted without the consent of Taiwan's people has any valid claim to sovereignty over the island or any right to characterize Taiwan's future as its "internal affairs." To this end, CTIR works with the international community to uphold the right of Taiwan's people to decide their future for themselves and to ensure that this decision is made freely without threat, coercion, or false information. Please visit the following pages, and join us in working for the present and future of Taiwan: Read our list of Activities and Services and decide when you want to have a speaker about Taiwan. Taiwan battles severe drought
A lingering drought has pushed the water level at Taipei's Feitshui Reservoir to danger lows Staff and wires TAIPEI, Taiwan The Taipei government has ordered the implementation of the second phase of water restrictions as a prolonged drought continues to push the water level of the city's reservoir to dangerous lows. Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou has ordered the second of the five-phase water conservation plan to be implemented on May 8, as there are no signs of relief for northern Taiwan. The first phase has already led to the suspension of the watering of flowers and shrubbery at city government facilities, and street-cleaning activities that make use of water. Fountains around the city have also been turned off, while cleaning of the exterior of buildings has been suspended. But the second phase of water rationing is considered more rigorous, cutting off water supplies to public and private swimming pools, saunas, therapeutic spas and car washes.
