It was the era of the great voyages, and from a European historic viewpoint, a period of "great discoveries". Portugal was the first European power to invade Asia. In 1510, they captured Goa of India, destroyed the kingdom of Malacca, and by having control of the Strait of Malacca, the Portuguese expanded their influences towards the southeast and northeast Asia. Moving north in an endeavor to trade with China and Japan, they occupied Macao in 1537. In 1544, a Portuguese fleet sailing through the Taiwan Strait on the way to Japan sighted Taiwan and called it Ilha Formosa, meaning "Beautiful Island." This is the origin of Taiwan's other name, Formosa. However, whenever they came across a beautiful island on the sea, Portuguese sailors had the habit of calling it "Ilha Formosa", so there are more than ten islands in Africa, South America and Asia which bear the same name. Nevertheless, Formosa has become the proper name of Taiwan, and is now commonly used among Westerners.

But during the age of exploration and maritime conquest by Europeans, Taiwan attracted world attention because of its strategic location and abundant natural resources. The Dutch and the Spanish colonized parts of northern and southern Taiwan. Jheng Cheng-gong(Koxinga) 鄭成功, who was loyal to the fallen Ming dynasty 明朝, defeated the Dutch in 1662 and set up a government on Taiwan to defy the Manchus, who had established the Ching dynasty 清朝. The Manchus conquered Taiwan in 1683 and ruled the island until 1895, when Taiwan was ceded to Japan after the First Sino-Japanese War. Japan relinquished sovereignty over Taiwan after World War II.

Introduction to A.S. Working in A.S. ... Home The pre-history of Taiwan can be traced back 50,000-30,000 years. At that time, the island and the mainland were linked, and thus archaeologists generally agree that the paleolithic cultures discovered on Taiwan are related to those found on the mainland. By the end of the last glacier epoch around 18,000-10,000 years ago, the island was separated from mainland. The archaeological findings indicated that different groups of people moved to Taiwan from the southeast coast of mainland and from Southeast Asia in different times and created the neolithic cultures and metal cultures on the island. Recovering from the war, great efforts were made to develop Taiwan’s economy and in recent years, much emphasis has been placed on the development of democracy. The Martial Law was lifted in 1987, and the first general election of the president took place in 1996. Four years later, Chen Shui-bian of the Democratic Progressive Party was elected president in 2000 and thus the Guomindang’s 51 years of rule was interrupted and a new epoch of political party rotation emerged on Taiwan. 128 Academia Road Sec. 2, Nankang Taipei 115 Taiwan, ROC

The Portuguese went to Taiwan in 1590, thus becoming the first set of Europeans to arrive. They were so impressed with the island, they called it Formosa , which means beautiful. In 1692, the Dutch frustrated Spanish attempts at developing settlements by taking possession of the P'enghu Islands. Within three years, the Dutch were on Taiwan's southeastern coast.

History Taiwan, formerly known as Formosa, is a land of divine beauty and warm hospitality. Long ago, humanity began to flock the island after rumors of untold riches of the island. Pirates, political exiles, traders, adventurers, farmers, and fishermen abandoned their homes in the coastal areas of China to begin a new life in Taiwan, with hopes of striking it rich and leading a better life. Taiwan is rich in Chinese history and culture, the latter being the cement that has kept the Chinese civilization together to this day. Taiwan's first inhabitants were the autochthonous ProtoAustronesians. The first settlement in Taiwan existed during the 12th Century. Immigration of a larger scale only started in the 17th Century when the Dutch and Spanish set up small colonial outposts in Taiwan. However, these Westerners never stayed long on this island. Soon after, the infamous Chinese dynasties claimed fame and fortune, and created history for themselves in rebuilding Taiwan. As Taiwan progressed, many other foreign powers became infatuated with its natural wealth and sought to contest with the ruling dynasty for a share of the resources.

Ancestors of indigenous groups (population: 360,000 in 2000) with ethnic ties to insular South East Asia arrived in Taiwan millennia earlier than recent waves of settlers from the Asian continent. Speaking Austronesian languages (related to Filipino, Bahasa Indonesia and Hawaiian), the latest of those immigrants probably originated in the Malay archipelago and perhaps also in Polynesia, as well). Seen today as indigenous people, they came to Taiwan no later than 1,000 C.E. Visiting in 1590, Portuguese sailors called Taiwan Ilha Formosa It means "Beautiful Island." Taiwan has been populated for approximately 5,000 years. Little is known about the original inhabitants, but distinctive jadeware, and corded pottery of the Beinan, Changpin and Tapenkeng cultures show a marked diversity in the island's early inhabitants. Today's Taiwan's aboriginal peoples , are classified as belonging to the Austronesian ethno-linguistic group of people, a linguistic group that stretches as far west as Madagascar, to Easter Island in the east and to New Zealand in the south with Taiwan as the northern most point.

Monday, Feb 21, 2005,Page 8 Advertising Taipei's Huashan Culture and Art Center on Saturday hosted an event in honor of Black History Month, which was certainly an eyeopener to those who only know about this activity from reading the Boondocks comic strip. One Web site which narrates the history of Black History Month points out that when the event was first created in the 1920s as Negro History Week, black history as such was barely recognized as a subject of study. There is no doubt that the lack of interest in the academic community at that time in black history in the US the history of a large community that had been present since colonial times was simply a result of exclusionary attitudes towards black people. Since they were seen as inferior and their society marginal, what history of significance, scholars asked, could they possibly have? But that people celebrate Black History Month in Taiwan brigs us to an interesting question: When is anyone going to celebrate Taiwanese History Month? Of course some might say that since Taiwanese represent the majority culture, the idea of a special month of celebration is absurd. Historical events are celebrated all the time whenever an important anniversary arises.

... about me Taiwan Under the Japanese (1895 - 1945) Being its first colony, Japan was determined to rule Taiwan with an iron glove as much prestige rested on its ability to govern Taiwan properly. Japan was determined to show the Western colonialists that it too was a power to be reckoned with and could govern its colonies just as well as they could. Japan, therefore, treated its occupation of Taiwan as an experiment in colonial management, whereby it planned to use its experiences at colonial administration in Taiwan as precedents for its other future Asian colonies. One of their first policies was to put an end to Chinese migration from the mainland and to staff the military, bureaucracy and government with Japanese citizens. The Japanese also placed a high priority on establishing domestic law and order by putting an end to warlordism, and eradicating lawlessness and anti-Japanese rebellions - especially in southern Taiwan. Japanese reprisals were harsh during this time, and on one occasion in 1896 when anti-Japanese protests occurred, thirty villages were destroyed and every living thing for a radius of five miles was killed. Culture and education policies were the next issues with which the Japanese dealt. In an effort to destroy Chinese cultural inheritance in Taiwan, the Japanese introduced Japanese-style schools in an attempt to indoctrinate Taiwanese children with Japanese language, culture and traditions where neither Mandarin Chinese nor the local dialect were taught in schools. Later on, even scholarships to study in Japan were introduced. Generally speaking, however, Taiwan's education system was greatly improved by the Japanese, with marked increases in the island's literacy rate and technological skills.

The population of Hakka in Taiwan is about 3 millions. The population studies in the early 20th century during Japan colonial era to more recent one two decades ago, showed the 13-15 % of population in Taiwan are Hakka. The percentage of Hakka may vary significantly according to the definition of Hakka. If it is based on the paternal origin, it may be more. If it is based on the ability to speak Hakka, the only character that may differentiate Hakka from other Taiwanese, the percentage probably will be much lower.

When the Communists came to power on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government that gradually democratised and incorporated native Taiwanese within its structure. In March 2000, the Nationalists were defeated in a popular election by the Democratic People's Party (the first non-violent change in rule in 5000 years of Chinese history), and Taiwan is now lead by Chen Shuibian. Unlike the immense deserts appear at the same latitude worldwide (Arabia, Sahara, Namibia, Central Australia ), this island has abundant rainfall, beautiful forests and mountains. Its diverse natural and cultural features are destined by the geographic position. Inhabited by indigenous people of Eurasia and Austronesian linguistic group for millennia, Taiwan emerged on the world scene in the early 17 th century. Portuguese sailors discovered the island as early as 1542 and called it "Ilha Formosa" (meaning beautiful island), but it was the Dutch formally colonized this island first in 1624. Taiwan became a pivotal transshipment center of its East Asian trade networks. Flows of raw silk, porcelain, gold from China; silver from Japan; spices from Batavia (Jakarta); and rice, sugar, deerskins from Taiwan made enormous profit for the Dutch. Starvation, poverty, and wars with Manchurian in China triggered the first large-scale immigration of Han people to Taiwan , and brought the Dutch control to an end. Cheng, Ch'eng-Kung (also known as Koxinga, who was the a son of a Chinese father and Japanese mother, born and raised in Japan until 7), a powerful admiral loyal to the faded Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), led his 25,000 troops expelling the Dutch by force in 1662. He and his successors started to administrate and cultivate the island systematically, dreaming of reviving the Ming Dynasty from this remote base.

In the 1960s Taiwan adopted export-oriented policies, establishing export processing zones with incentives to attract direct foreign investment. Meanwhile, the government also pursued industrialization. A strong manufacturing sector developed, with most products consisting of labor-intensive goods. During the 1980s the focus of manufacturing shifted to capital- and technology-intensive commodities, such as personal computers and machinery. In an effort to join the World Trade Organization (WTO), an international body that promotes and enforces the provisions of trade laws and regulations, Taiwan’s government began liberalizing the economy in the 1990s by deregulating banking, finance, the stock market, investment, and trade. Taiwan’s membership in the WTO was approved in late 2001.

THE STORY OF TAIWAN With Communist China threatening to invade, the island of Taiwan is stuck in one of the most dangerous political situations in the world. Only the risk of American military support and Western outcry has kept the Chinese army at bay. But the threats keep coming. The Communists claim Taiwan belongs to China and eventually the island will be reunified with the mainland, as Hong Kong was recently. Any suggestion by Taiwanese politicians that Taiwan has no interest in joining China and wishes to remain independent brings angry threats of violence from the Chinese government. A quick look at the history of the island gives some insight into the resentment the Taiwanese people feel at the thought of being ruled by yet another "outside" power.
