Brief History:
The establishment of the Graduate Institute of Taiwan History (GITH) of National Chengchi University has been under preparation since January 2003 and was approved by the Ministry of Education in September 2003. GITH has begun to enroll new students since the Spring of 2004, with an initial enrollment of fifteen. Located on the fifth floor of the JiTao Building (©u³³¼Ó)on the NCCU campus, GITH was officially inaugurated in August 2004.
Education Goal:
Features:
GITH is the first graduate institute of Taiwan history to be established in any college or university in Taiwan. GITH plans to expand upon the scholarly achievements in academic fields related to Taiwan history and cultivate outstanding professionals possessing both research and teaching capabilities in Taiwan history. Concerning the direction of future development, GITH will lay great emphasis on research in modern and contemporary politics, and the economic, social, and cultural history of Taiwan, in which the history of post-war human rights in Taiwan will be a field of particular prominence.
Future Development:
Owing to the limited number of faculty in the preliminary stage of the program, GITH will have as its primary focus the modern and contemporary history of Taiwan by integrating the current professional faculty and library resources of NCCU. In consideration of the demands of academic research and competitiveness after graduation, graduate students of GITH are required to study a second foreign language related to their individual research area, such as Japanese or Dutch. In addition, training provided by GITH lays special emphasis on the enhancement of students¡¦ reading ability.

A revision of school books on the island's past unleashes a huge political firestorm
By Laurie Underwood Taipei Go to a story about kidnapping school children T RY THIS MULTIPLE-CHOICE TEST . Taiwan is a) a province of China temporarily separated by war; b) part of a greater Chinese nation that will be reunited when the mainland becomes democratic and prosperous; or c) an independent country that will never join China or any other state. The correct answer could be any of the above depending on which Taiwan political group is marking your paper. Education Minister Wu Jin is now in the middle of a much tougher test. A series of history textbooks his ministry revamped is drawing flak from various quarters for its take on Taiwan's past. Even the most basic details such as whether local residents are "Taiwanese" or "Chinese" have become the subjects of heated controversy. Weary educators are now asking how chapters covering Taiwan's past, present or future relationship with China can be written to accommodate all schools of thought. The answer seems to be: they can't. Wu learned that the hard way after completing Getting to Know Taiwan, a series of new textbooks in the island's junior high school curriculum. Public hearings in June to review the books led to both television debates and egg-hurling protests. Critics, mainly champions of reunification with China, charge that the texts support Taiwan independence and paint an unrealistically rosy picture of Japan's occupation of the island from 1895 to 1945.

Taiwan: A New History , edited by Murray A. Rubinstein. M. E. Sharpe, Armonk, 1999. xiv+520pp. US$69.95 (hardcover); US$27.95 (paperback). From Lee Teng-hui's visit to USA in 1995, following the saber-rattling show of Chinese military muscle toward Taiwan, the victory of Lee's presidential election, Asian financial crisis, to recent political claim of 'special state-to-state relationships between Taiwan and China', the social reaction to the devastating earthquake, and the millenium presidential election, all these events share a common theme: Taiwan society's anxiety of knowing its identity in the world. The identity problem is a product of Taiwan's history. Should it consider itself as a zone of Chinese frontier? Or should it de-sinicize itself and accept Western culture? This problem has been a main concern in the past four hundred years, and definitely will continue to be a dominant issue in the future. This book, edited by Murray A. Rubinstein, can be said a book from the historical perspective to probe the collective identification problem faced by Taiwanese to date. There are a lot of English books on Taiwan, but most of them focus on Taiwan's economic development and its role in geopolitics, which reflects the development of post-cold war international politics and new division of labour. The publication of this collaborative book offers us a new way to understand 'the other Taiwan'.

China History Forum, online chinese history forum Chinese History Topics General Discussion Pages: Yun Jun 29 2004, 09:40 PM I've been reading in lots of mainland Chinese history and geography books the standard line that "Taiwan has been a sacred and inalienable part of China since ancient times". The question that bothers me is just how "ancient" is "ancient times"?
The usual evidence cited is the Three Kingdoms Wu naval expedition that came to Taiwan in 230 and captured a number of aboriginal people. But such a raiding expedition hardly shows that Taiwan was under direct control by a Chinese state - in fact, it demonstrates the opposite. The expedition was judged to be a failure by the Wu court because most of the soldiers died of disease, and the two generals leading it were executed.

Taiwan's 400 years of history
Important milestones from the early 1600s to the present
Originally, Taiwan was settled by people of Malay-Polynesian descent, who initially inhabited the low-lying coastal plains. They called their island Pakan . Here is a detail of an old Dutch navigational map with this name on it. During the subsequent settlement by the Dutch and the waves of settlers from China, the aborigines retreated to the hills and mountains, and became the "mountain people."
