Refreshingly, Teng divorces the relationship of the island and the mainland from the now stale arguments over reunification, or whether or not Taiwan is part of China, and grounds it in the tantalizing history of Chinese imperialism. She draws on Qing dynasty (1644-1911) travel writing and paintings to argue that China effectively colonized the island...Teng makes adroit use of a growing body of literature stigmatizing China as a colonial conquerorrather than a victim of European colonialismand incorporates the importance of Taiwan into the debate on Chinese expansionism.
Macabe Keliher, Far Eastern Economic Review Thoroughly examining Qing dynastic travel accounts and maps of Taiwan, Teng has written a splendid analysis of changing Chinese perceptions of Taiwan and its indigenous peoples from the late 17th century on, culminating in Taiwan's becoming a province of China in 1887...This book should be read by anyone interested in early Taiwanese history or in better understanding the current views about Taiwan held by Chinese in both the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China. Those interested in discourses about the nature of imperialism or in how depictions of indigenous native peoples are manipulated to suit colonizers' needs will also find this book worthwhile.

HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY OF TAIWAN Taiwan Island, the Penghu Island group (Pescadores), and the vicinity islands, are located in the Southeast Asia of the Pacific Ocean. Taiwan Island alone occupies 99% of the total area of 35,961 square kilometers. It is 377 kilometers long from north to south and from east to west, it is 142 kilometers across at its widest. 1. Taiwan's origins: The Proto-Malays, belonging to the South Paleo-Mongoloid racial group, lived on Taiwan 5,000 years ago during the Neolithic Ages and Alluvial Epoch. These aborigines were the forerunners in Taiwan's dawning era. Some of them were mixed with immigrants from southeastern coast of China (the Han people) through intermarriage. Others were driven into the mountain areas. In 1557 Portuguese sailors reached Taiwan and named it "Ilha Formosa" (=beautiful island). During the past 400 years, the history of Taiwan has mainly concerned Taiwan's Han people. But the aborigines of today are an integral part of the Taiwanese Nation. 2. The ROC government, led by the Kuomintang (KMT), relocated to Taiwan in 1949 when the Chinese Communist Party established the People's Republic of China (PRC) on the mainland. It has since exercised jurisdiction over Taiwan, Penghu (the Pescadores 澎湖群島), Kinmen (Quemoy 金門), Matsu 馬祖, and numerous other islets. The two sides of the Taiwan Strait have since been governed as separate territories. ◎Taiwan Off the eastern coast of Asia lie the mountainous island arcs of the Western Pacific. Located only 160 km across the Taiwan Straits from the southeastern coast of China, the island of Taiwan is shaped roughly like a large tobacco leaf, nearly 400 km long and 150 km wide. On its eastern side, the mountains rise straight out of the sea and continue into the central part of the island. On Taiwan’s western side lies a long, flat, fertile plain where more than 90% of the population resides. Taiwan’s highest peak, Jade Mountain (Yushan), is over 3952 m high, higher than Mt. Fuji in Japan. The three largest cities are the capital Taipei in the north, industrial Kaohsiung in the south, and Taichung in the central western plain.Great Maps!

Earthquakes Taiwan is on the western edge of the Pacific "rim of fire." Though Taiwan has no active volcanoes, it sits over a major fault line and experiences frequent tremors. On September 21, 1999, a major earthquake devastated portions of the central island—including the town of Puli, where SEND works closely with the local church, and areas near Taichung, where SEND’s Taiwan office is located.

Welcome to my Taiwan Page. Please read below for a brief introduction to Taiwan and follow the links to more in-depth articles covering the topics in which you are interested. Brief History Geography and Climate Natural Resources Population ... Brief History In 1895, China was forced by military defeat to cede Taiwan to Japan. In 1945, however, it reverted to Chinese control after the Japan was defeated. When the Communists came to power on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government that gradually democratised and incorporated native Taiwanese within its structure. In March 2000, the Nationalists were defeated in a popular election by the Democratic People's Party (the first non-violent change in rule in 5000 years of Chinese history), and Taiwan is now lead by Chen Shuibian. Since 1945, the island has prospered as one of East Asia's economic miracles, but the relationship between Taiwan and Mainland China and the question of eventual reunification is still the most pressing issue in Taiwan today. Top Geography and Climate Taiwan is situated in Eastern Asia, and borders the East China Sea.
