home INTRODUCTION TO THE VESPA CLUB OF TAIWAN
Taiwan has a long history and love of Italian motorscooters.
The first Vespa scooter was imported into Taiwan in 1956, and the popularity of Italian scooters grew along with Taiwan's economic development until in 1963 the island country began its production of Vespas at its own factory under license from Piaggio. Lambretta scooters followed Vespa's rear wheel and began production at their own local factory in 1967. The next year a third factory was opened to produce Vespas, but its ownership and licencing was completely separate from the first factory and it differed in the types of Vespa models it pumped out. The first factory produced 'Way Sure Pie' a phonetic translation of Vespa into Chinese and the second factory produced 'Bee Yah Joe', Piaggio. Bajaj became the last competitor to enter the market in 1971 with their 'Bye Gee Fah'.
Eastern cultures have a love of the Lotus flower because it is a creature of stunning beauty that grows from a stinking muck. And likewise, from the mire of plastic scooters in Taiwan, a group of those faithful to the classic Italian style and the quality of Italian scooters grew throughout the 1990's.
It began with four scooter enthusiasts from four different parts of the island who kept in contact while looking for vintage scooters and parts for their collections. Their friends caught on, and in 1996 the Vespa Club of Taiwan kick-started into action. Through media coverage, exposure at rallies, and a change in Taiwan's culture in which antique and imported became more "hip", the club steadily grew like the curve of a front legshield. Presently the club has a membership of over 215 scooterists with ages ranging from 17 to 70, and has become a mode of promoting and preserving a part of Taiwan's culture that was otherwise heading toward extinction.

    Taiwan History and Culture
History The first settlers were believed to be indigenous people since prehistoric times. In 1517, Portuguese sailors discovered this place and named it Ilha Formosa (Beautiful Island). Later in 1624, the Dutch were the first to invade this island and remained as colonists. Only in the 15th century did a steady stream of migrants came from Fujian province, triggered by the victory of the Manchus over the Ming dynasty and the Dutch. Japan took Taiwan from China in 1895 following a dispute over Korea. It was not until the end of WWII in 1945, that it was handed back to China.

    of Taiwan Background:
In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan, however it reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government using the 1947 constitution drawn up for all of China. Over the next five decades, the ruling authorities gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within its governing structure. Throughout this period, the island has prospered to become one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issue continues to be the relationship between Taiwan and China and the question of eventual reunification.

Among the various tribes around the world, the range of distribution of the Austronesians is the second only to Indo-European tribes. The distance they cover from the east to the west is over half of the earth's circumference, covering from the Easter Island in the western shore of South America in the east, from the Madagascar in the eastern Africa in the west, from the southern area of New Zealand in the south, and the northern shore of Taiwan in the north. According to the Australian archeologist, Mr. Peter Bellwood's research, it shows that the Austronesian languages of Taiwan's aborigine peoples contain many ancient language elements, Taiwan is viewed as the homeland of Austronesian languages and possibly even the place where the Austronesian people originated. The third "Festival of Austronesian Cultures in Taitung", designated as one the Twelve Major Local Festivals in Taiwan, is held at the National Museum of Prehistory in Taitung. Attractions include the Exhibition of Austronesian Musical Instruments, Tribal Experience Camp, Flotsam Creation of Installation Art, and Ceramic Creations
