Culture Back Next Puppetry Puppet shows are very common and entertaining. Chinese puppetry, on the other hand, is a traditional culture that began as early as the 10th Century during the Sung Dynasty. Two forms of Chinese puppetry include marionette theater and shadow theater. Both forms were highly developed even back in the Sung Dynasty. In China, puppetry is considered to be an art of tremendous visual and aural attraction. In Taiwan, there is an additional form of puppetry called the glove puppet theater. Immigrants from the southern coast of the Chinese mainland introduced puppetry to Taiwan in the early 19th Century. With the advancement in time, puppetry in Taiwan acquired its own distinct cultural features and artistic styles. The most widely used puppetry is the string marionette. Shows are based on religious purposes other than entertaining audiences. Some consider puppet shows to be a form of appreciation to the gods or to drive away evil. Shadow puppetry in Taiwan originated from the Chaochow School of shadow puppetry. Shadow plays were popular in Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung during the Ching Dynasty (1644-1911AD). This method of puppetry is based on light penetrating through a translucent sheet of cloth; the shadows are silhouettes seen by audience in profile or face on. These plays are often supplemented by 'priest melodies', which are considered to be a priceless assets.

If this is your first visit to Taiwan, you will most certainly be amazed at the diversity of things this beautiful island has to offer, as a rich historical background has provided Taiwan with a multifaceted culture. People from many different places and backgrounds, such as Taiwan's indigenous people, the southern Fujianese from early China, Hakka immigrants, the Dutch, Spanish, and Japanese, and the recent immigrants from mainland China. have all played a role in Taiwan's development.
While gradually developing a new culture indigenous to Taiwan, they also held on to their respective customs and traditions; as a result, you will be able to sample indigenous, Taiwanese, and Chinese cultures and even find traces left by the Dutch and the Japanese when traveling in Taiwan.
CHINESE CULTURE
Taiwan forms the center of Chinese art and culture, which is not only obvious from the exhaustive collection of cultural relics from past dynasties exhibited in the famous National Palace Museum, but can also be perfectly illustrated by the traditional architecture and folk art found in Taiwan.

Burning of fake money for Ghost Month
Courtesy of Travel in Taiwan
Ghost Month (7th Lunar Month) Ghost Month is a cultural holiday for the inbhabitants of Taiwan. It occurs on the 7th lunar month of every year. During this month, the Gates of Hades are said to open and the ghosts walk the earth. To avoid any trouble with the ghosts, activities such as traveling, moving, getting married, swimming, etc. are avoided and put off until after the Ghost month. Many things are done to please the ghosts, such as burning paper money, entertaining them with festivals, holding parades, operas, and presenting them with sumptuous banquets. There are huge displays of sacrifice during this month to appease the ghosts. Also, bamboo poles are erected to invite the ghosts in and to help the lost ghosts find their way.
